JIMMY PAGE Presents 1957 LES PAUL Guitar To RIFFATHON Winner - July 29, 2005
According to Led-Zeppelin.com, the Hammersmith Palais rocked on Sunday night (July 24) with ten absolutely awesome performances of an extraordinary level of guitar playing for the Riffathon charity guitar competition final. Jimmy Page (LED ZEPPELIN) and Brian May (QUEEN) were judging the show, along with Dan Hawkins from THE DARKNESS. They were all blown away by the high standard, and the decision to find a winner was proven extremely difficult. Martin Tomkins from Kettering stole the show and first prize with his awe-inspiring performance of LED ZEPPELIN's "Rock & Roll". He couldn't get the grin off his face all night — especially after being presented a 1957 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top, which he called a "dream guitar," by Jimmy Page, who introduced the winner as "this guy without doubt played it ('Rock n' Roll') better than I have done." If that's a real '57 (and not simply a reissue, which I think it is) it's worth tens of thousands of dollars...

I don't know them, and never heard anything by them, but general opinion as far as I gather is that they are not taken seriously (which, in a way, is worse than that they suck).
And Jimmy Page is the most overrated guitarist of all time, #2 is Carlos Santana. Sloppy, sloppy. Better songwriter than player.

He was sloppy, but he had attitude. That counts for a lot. I agree that he was a better songwriter than player, he wrote some of the greatest songs of all time.
