AS I LAY DYING Vocalist Says Metalcore Fad Is Fading

AS I LAY DYING vocalist Tim Lambesis recently told the Great Falls Tribune that the sub-genre of metalcore is nearing its expiration. "I think metal core is a trend right now and so it's easy to write a metal core record," Lambesis said. "I think it's pretty much at its peak right now. It'll get a little bigger this summer. Sounds of the Underground is going out. Ozzfest is going out. Those are both big tours that feature a lot of metal core bands. Those will, I think, bring it to its peak and then from there, it'll be up to each band individually to survive the trend." Lambesis hopes fans see AS I LAY DYING's new album, "Shadows Are Security", more as a classic metal album than just another metalcore production. "I think a timeless metal record is one that has very precise guitar work," Lambesis said. "Very fast and energetic drumming. It doesn't have a token breakdown for the sake of having a token breakdown. Every part of the song makes sense as an actual part of a song and not just a breakdown or a dance part for kids to mosh to." In addition to his vocal duties and songwriting responsibilities, Lambesis also produces the AS I LAY DYING records and has branched out to produce records for other bands, most recently, SWORN ENEMY. "I really enjoy producing our stuff and I really think that people who've heard the new record really like the production of it," he said. "The producer has the overall vision. A lot of bands write great individual parts, but when it comes to putting songs together, the producer makes them do actual songs. It's pretty easy when you listen to a lot of metal CDs to hear great riffs and great individual parts, but very few metal bands actually make great songs." Hahaha, he wants us to think of the new As I Lay Dying as a "classic metal" album. Sorry dumbass, but you're living in a dreamworld if you honestly think that's what your new album sounds like. You sound just like every other metalcore band out there right now.
Hopefully in a couple years this idiotic metalcore phase will die down (much like nu-metal finally has!) and these trendy kids will move on to kill some other sub-genre.

Ozzfest isn't all that metalcore this year. Killswitch, Mastadon, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, The Haunted, In Flames, Shadows Fall, Maiden...none of them even approach the metalcore genre.
Of course I've always advocated stopping the stereotypes of any music. I hate that metal is divided into all of these sub-genres and that people argue over what band fits into what category...really, it's just stupid. There are two genres for me: bands I like and bands I don't like.

AILD as metalcore. I was really confused with Metal Blade Records said that they were a Death Metal band. I don't think that they have ever tried to come off as death metal. Still, I don't think that they have written any memorable metal records. Now I do think that 'Beneath the encasing of Ashes" was a great metalcore record. They were also metalcore before it was popular to metalcore. I saw these guys at a show 3 years ago.
Finally, I would like to say that metalcore sure beats rap and emo!

its usually in the middle of the song or towards the end
its mostly a variation of beats with the guitar and drums
idk its kinda hard to explain ud hafta hear it

IntoThePit, I was probably into metal before you were even born. Did you start with Iron Butterfly, Sabbath, and Priest when they were first coming out? I doubt it. I've been listening to metal for 25+ years so I'd like to think I know a thing or two.
As I said in my post before, categorizing and putting metal into sub-genres isn't really my thing. However, for the purpose of this article, I don't believe any of the bands I listed fit into the "metalcore" genre.
If you believe they do that's your opinion but there's no need to insult my intelligence just because you don't agree with me.

Metal is metal...wehter it has breakdowns or not. To me it's all the same. As I lay Dying has shredding guitars and excellent drumming. To me that's Metal...I bet many of you idiots haven't even heard the CD and are bashing it because it's "metalcore". And as somebody posted above...what have you morons done for the metal community?? I bet the AILD guys beat the crap out of you nobodies in their respective instruments. Trend or not, it doesn't appear to me that "metal core" is dying. Look at album sales...
Avenged Sevenfold, As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, Atreyu, & Shadows Fall have all had albums debut in the top 40 in the last year and a half. I also expect Chimaira will make the sixth band to do so next week. It looks to me like it's only getting started. When Unearth and Mastodon put out their next albums they will sell alot as well.

oh, and the reason these bands are all labeled metalcore is because 90% of them sound the same. the sound was cool and interesting when it was going on like, 5 years ago, but people are tired of it now. every 16 year old who gets a guitar for christmas is doing this stuff.

btw, Mastodon is NOT a metalcore band. if you classify them as such, you're a moron! how in the hell are they metalcore? if anything, i'd put them under a prog-metal category. they're like Tool with balls (not to bash Tool. love that band.) just because they've gotten big at the same time as all of these metalcore bands doesn't make them as such. Mastodon has more elements in common with a band like Isis or Neurosis (mainly in use of atmosphere and vocal phrasing) than a band like Shadows Fall or KSE or As I Lay Dying. Mastodon are just a heavier version of a band like Isis or Neurosis.

As much as I hate the term nu-metal i will say that I thought nu-metal was bad but it was just the tip of the iceberg. Explain to me how metalcore got its fucking name? If anything, it should be called Emocore. It's all so fucking gay. There is a slight difference between what was called nu-metal and what emocore is......nu-metal had no solos plain and simple while emocore is trying to compensate for its lack of originality by throwing a solo here and there and having unbearably gay vocals, just their attempt to draw heavy music fans and emo fans at the same time....most nu-metal was bad but this shit is 10 times worse.

I find the whole "metalcore" fad similar to the "hair band" fad in the 80's. The metalcore guys are riding the coat tails of the Death Metal founders (Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, etc) similarly to the 80's hair bands riding the coat tails of bands such as Judas Priest and Maiden. The founders blaze the trail and do all the work while they guys just ease on in with little dues payed. This fad will run its course like most and will eventualy be replaced by some other fad. Personally I see metalcore more like "Fratcore" since most of these guys look and sound like they are spoiled rich kids pretending to have had a bad childhood or something. They look like spoiled frat guys to me.

Whats wrong with being white trash. I always thought of metal as a music primarily made by white trash. Not that its a bad thing. Im white trash. Ill admit it. What Im saying is would you rather have your metal played by rich yuppie frat boys. Didnt think so. Metal to me is the music for fucked up white people. ,but labels are made for a reason. How many of you would like for all metal to be called just metal? Most of us would miss out on bands that we enjoy. There are too many bands, too many styles for it to be labeled under one category. Just like in life, categories/stereotypes are created for a reason. Sure, the boundaries can be blurred sometimes, but that just means those bands are being innovative.
