DREAM THEATER's 'Scenes From A Memory' CD Turned Into Stage Production - Aug. 10, 2005
Work has begun on a stage production of DREAM THEATER's acclaimed concept album, "Scenes from a Memory". This is a full-stage production, not a performance of the album.

The play, written and directed by longtime DREAM THEATER fan Danni Segal, will run for four performances from November 17 through November 19, 2005 (three evenings plus one Saturday matinee) at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, East Sussex (near Hastings and Eastbourne) in England. This may be the only time this is ever done, so anyone interested is encouraged to come along.

"Scenes from a Memory" tells the story of Nicholas, a young man who starts experiencing strange dreams when he moves to a new town. The dreams keep repeating, and seem to centre on a young woman he has never seen before. He seeks the assistance of a hypnotherapist who helps provide one sets of answers, but creates a whole new set of questions: Who is the mysterious young woman? What is her connection to the shocking events of 1928? And what effect will the answers have on Nicholas?

That's great that a fan is so into the album that he wrote a screenplay for it. It should be killer. I agree with spinecraft, DT's music should be included in the show as a soundtrack or just make it a full-blown musical.

I love this album so much, I pick up something new from the story every time I hear it. I listen to it when I have to sit in traffic because the story and the music are so intriguing it takes me far away from the shithole that is metro Atlanta traffic.

As far as a stage production, I don't think even this masterpiece would get me into a theater with a bunch of thespians. I'm sure it'll be great for those who are into that kind of thing, but to me, it just doesn't seem right....

Was good until Train of Thought- Strangely enough they had a pattern before the album- The first album sucked, then Images and Awake came along, kicking ass all around, Followed by Falling Into Infinity which just plain blows (there are moments though), then Scenes and 6 degrees. Train of Thought sucked tremendously, and Octavarium is probably right up there with Train. They need to get the fuck out of this slump they're in and stop trying to fire out overly complicated albums with piss-poor lyrics in three weeks. They're obviously not in it for the music anymore, they're in it for the money and the fans. All they've done is tone their crap down and generalize their style so it gets more air time and more people will listen to it. Kevin Moore was right for leaving this band- they're fucking horrible.

Newbie? Sorry jackass, just cause I don't post here daily like the you do, doesn't mean I haven't been a member for the past 3 years. Compare their newer stuff to the music that they released 5, 10 years ago. Are the lyrics as good as they were back then? Hell no. Take Octavarium, which has BY FAR some of the shittiest lyrics I've ever heard on any album, or Honor Thy Father off of Train of Thought; a prog song about fatherhood and divorce? Ok, I guess that's alright if the lyrics and music are there, but are they? Not at all. Now let's take something like Voices off of Awake, Blind Faith from 6 Degrees or the entirety of Scenes. The lyrics are well thought out and written and the music that accompanies it is incredible.

The entire band has even acknowledged that Train of Thought and Falling Into Infinity were off-albums, which says quite a bit coming from the ones who wrote it. If you've got the Train of Thought disc, pop it in your CD drive and watch the production footage from the album and note the part where they mention the amount of time that it took them to write the album. Following that, listen to the album, then listen to Scenes; now tell me that Train of Thought isn't crap when compared to any of their other work.

Honestly, I don't think the band has the feeling left in them. Last year I saw back to back shows in Boston and New York before they left for Europe and watching them on stage wasn't at all entertaining. They don't get into the music (which, I can understand, since they're not exactly playing un-complicated stuff), but the fans don't either. The entire audience sits in their seats as if they're at the movies and doesn't appear to be amused in the slightest. If you can't even captivate your fans, you're obviously doing something wrong.

I was hoping for this album to be a return to form for Dream Theater and needless to say, I was dissapointed. Even so, that's just my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own- I don't attack people for what they think (although I will disagree), and I'm sure as hell not one of the many pre-pubescent teenagers pissing their pants every time someone shits all over their band. Duffc, grow up and go fuck yourself :)

Bummer for you.

I really loved TOT. I'm fine with Octavarium, it brings something different from Six Degrees and TOT. It's got some mellow tunes, ok, but I'm good with that. Octavarium song is 24 minutes long. I think they're growing the fanbase and it's good for them. Exciting times.

Now, maybe it'd be great to get a collection of covers they did (either studio or live).

... You obviously haven't been listening to Dream Theater for very long. You forgot to mention Awake.

Listen to the first two tracks from Train Of Thought and tell me they suck. Those tracks alone are worth the price of the album. You need to get killed.

Also, When Dream And Day Unite was a fantastic album, if you don't like it, you know no Dream Theater.

... You obviously didn't read my comment- I mentioned Awake a couple of times ;) Personally I don't think the length of time that I've listened to the band matters much, but for those of you who've gotten your panties in a twist over it, I've been listening to the band since Awake was released (my first Dream Theater album [I own them all]) in 1994. If there was a track I could choose off of Train of Thought it'd be Endless Sacrifice- yeah, As I Am is a cool way to start an album but it doesn't float my boat.
Unfortunately MaskOfSanity, I don't go for the shrilly squeally vocal style of Charlie Dominici on When Dream and Day Unite. Aside from that, the musical talent is there but the singing kills it for me.

Oh and since my comments seem to be getting everyone all bent out of shape, if you've got something you wanna talk about with me, feel free to send me a message :)

You don't make any sense. You forgot to mention Awake in your initial Dream Theater discography you know-it-all. Nowhere does any member of Dream Theater acknowledge Train of Thought as an off-album. More airplay? What radio station do you listen to? I might catch 'Pull Me Under' if the local station is doing the top ten list from each year.

Its funny that for someone who thinks they've sold out and Kevin Moore left at the right time you've still been listening to them.

And although this thread is dead, I'm sure someone else is going to try and throw a shot in at me on the same damn thing.
