ASIA Part Ways With Ex-AC/DC Drummer, Announce Replacement
- Aug. 14, 2005

Hot off their successful world tour in support of their fan and critically acclaimed album "Silent Nation", ASIA have parted amicably with drummer Chris Slade (THE FIRM, AC/DC). Replacing Slade in the group's lineup is Jay Schellen (BADFINGER, HURRICANE). "Jay was always our first choice as a replacement drummer for ASIA," vocalist John Payne revealed. "He played on the demos for some of the 'Silent Nation' tracks and we just clicked right from the start!"
Jay is a very well respect drummer in both the studio and on the stage. He has graced the ranks of such notable acts as BADFINGER and HURRICANE. Most recently, Jay participated in the Chris Squire/Billy Sherwood project, CONSPIRACY. ASIA founding member Geoff Downes added, "We are very happy to welcome Jay to the ASIA family and look forward to creating some of our best work to date with him behind the drum kit. We would just like to add that we wish Chris all the best and he will always remain a friend of ASIA."
ASIA have just entered the studio to begin recording their follow-up to 2004's "Silent Nation". The album, tentatively called "Architect of Time", will be released sometime in the first half of 2006 on InsideOut Music.

So far, I haven't seen anything that closely resembles the original lineup...stole the name though.

Geoff Downes is an original member, founding member, and he used to be the bass, lead singer. I had no idea that they were even putting albums out after like 1988.

Kimhandel..
Yes Geoff Downes is an original Member, but he wasn't the lead singer or bass player, he's the keyboardist.
The original lead singer is named John Wetton.
Actually I think Geoff Downes owns the name, so I guess it's his to steal! lol
Asia has been putting out albums with basically a rotating door of musicians (Geoff Downes and Jeff Payne excluded) since 1993. Their first CD with the new Asia lineup was basically the last with any real North American label support.
Hence why they haven't really toured north america that much. I think they did one tour with other 80's bands (Including Berlin, Fixx, Outfield) in 2001 which flopped big time.
If you guys do like "classic" Asia, there is a hope.. John Wetton and Geoff Downes have colaborated on the CD "Icon" which came out this past spring. It's the closest sounding thing to "Asia" since Wetton left the band!
Wetton/Downes will be touring together I guess later on this year to support.
Hope this helps,
Jodes

Didn't I read something a couple of years ago about Asia doing this thing where they'd play in people's living rooms for like 3 grand, or did I just make that up? I'd google it but I'm too lazy...

they were hiring themselves out to anyone to play. The Icon thing is all soft and slow except for the first track which was good. Shockingly, John Payne (in the ass) owns 2/3 of the Asia name. John Wetton and Carl Palmer both lost thier rights to the name. In fact all 4 original members were going to re-unite but John Payne said no. If they could just record one more album like the debut without Payne, either with Wetton or another good singer, I would die happy. John Payne is horrible. His singing is WAY too dramatic and his 2 word verses are fucking lame. I know all of this doesn't matter to you Nevermore/Meshugga(sic)/Slayer fans, but this is not about you so go hit the pipe and shut up!
