VAN HALEN: New Book To Focus On Band's History And Influence
- Aug. 15, 2005
After two years of research, and a lifetime of being a VAN HALEN fan, author Abel Sanchez has completed a brand new VAN HALEN book. Entitled "Van Halen 101", it is currently being published by Author House and slated for release in September 2005.
"Van Halen 101" is a comprehensive guide to the amazing history, music, impact and influence of the mighty VAN HALEN. From the birth of the Van Halen brothers all the way up to the recent 2004 tour, it's all here. The book includes a foreword by Brian May of QUEEN, as well as a tribute to Edward Van Halen by over 100 of the world's greatest musicians! From Allan Holdsworth and Steve Vai to James Hetfield and Zakk Wylde, over 100 of the baddest musicians on the planet came forward to personally share their thoughts, memories and stories about EVH. There's plenty of commentary on VAN HALEN, the band, too. In fact, here are a few excerpts of the commentary you will find inside this book:
"Without a doubt, Eddie Van Halen is the greatest guitar player who has ever lived." — Zakk Wylde
"I always thought Edward was great. He's a fantastic guitar player." — Allan Holdsworth
"What a wonderful musician...absolutely the pinnacle of guitar playing in our lifetime." — Brian May
"Eddie Van Halen is certainly one of the top innovative virtuosos in history." — Ted Nugent
"I think Eddie Van Halen is the Godfather of shred guitar. He is 'the one.'" — Mark Tremonti
As the icing on the cake, the book comes complete with "an absolutely phenomenal" cover shot provided by none other than legendary rock n' roll photographer Neil Zlozower. Guitar World magazine's Alan Paul recently stated after receiving an advanced copy, "I liked what I read a lot. This book is a labor of love and all true VH fans will love it."
"Van Halen 101" not only covers and discusses Edward Van Halen and the band in great detail, it also features and gives major respect to many different players, including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Allan Holdsworth and Randy Rhoads. In fact, there is even a chapter dedicated to the late, great Randy Rhoads where the author brought in none other than Kevin DuBrow, frontman for Randy's original band, QUIET RIOT. Kevin discusses everything from how he and Randy met and formed QUIET RIOT to what it was like to play the same club scene as VAN HALEN during the mid-to-late 1970s and witness their growth as a band. The book includes a detailed album-by-album discography, as well as an "FAQ" section, which focuses on and breaks down everything from the elements that make Edward Van Halen a great guitarist and the story of the Frankenstrat to the story of Edward's legendary collaboration with Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson on "Beat It" and the story of "Eruption". There's even a chapter dedicated to "tapping," which explains the history of tapping and includes fresh commentary from such legendary players such as Steve Hackett and Harvey "The Snake" Mandel.
Stay tuned for details in the very near future as to the price of this book, along with precisely where you can order it for the lowest price available.

what an impressive list of commentary...not.
Is this a book filled with one sentence comments about Eddie's playing?

maybe Eddie is in bad shape right now, but I saw Van Hagar last summer, and I just ignored Sammy...Eddie was great (especially considering he's an old geezer by now). I mean no one can touch early VH...most of the songs have one guitar track on the recording (not one guitar part, one guitar TRACK), whereas most rock recordings in the past 10-15 years have had at LEAST 2, and alot of the heavier bands now use 4 or more. Multi-tracking guitars isn't bad, thats not what I'm saying (I mean Hendrix was famous for doing it), but the fact is Eddie's tone was all in his hands and he didn't need to do overdubs to get you to hear how fucking awesome he is. Even if you don't like the music, most musicians can appreciate that one fact.

I'm going to second guess it. He is a fraud and an avg guitar player.

Gotta love the moron who asked whether this book is filled with one sentence comments about Eddie? LMAO. Bro, can't you read where it says "excerpts?" Obviously those comments are just a small piece of the commentary provided by those musicians. If it's a tribute to Eddie, which is LONG overdue, well, I think people like Zakk and Allan and those others have a whole lot more to say than one sentence you numbnut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for me, count me in. Definitely. This shit sounds like a must own.

Ok, Eddie might just be an asshole. Then again, maybe not. Do you know him? Ever hung out with or met the man? I dunno but I was just over at the VH Forums and they've had the lowdown on this amazing book for a good month or so. From what I hear, the tribute section not only has musicians talkin' about what kinda player he is, but about what kinda person he is too. Shit, I heard Eddie got Allan Holdsworth a record deal back in the day! So he can't be that much of an asshole. Again, that's just what I've heard from people "in the know," but there's a helluva lot more to this book than just "Eddie kicks ass!" type of commentary. I guess we'll know soon enough...
COMMENT | Besides... posted by : SonofMandingo 8/15/2005 3:19:03 PM
Besides, if Eddie was such an asshole and a drunk, why the hell would more than 100 of the "world's baddest musicians" (including Steve Vai) come forward to participate in a tribute to the guy!?!??!??!?
It's nice to hear people put things in perspective and not just talking out of their asses. These posters that bad mouth Eddie don't know him and can't accept that he has done more than they ever could for music. Sour grapes make a bitter whiner!!

i say fuck hagar and all the bashing lately. your not hearing a single word on this whole deal from eddie or alex this time. probably because they just dont give a fuck about hagar anymore. i wouldnt give a bag of my urine to see hagar solo.
i look forward to checking this book out.

If Zakk thinks EVH is the best guitarist why doesn't he play a replica of EVH's original striped guitar? Sorry I ain't buying that, Randy had more to say in his short life and EVH ran out of things to say after Fair Warning.
Why Can't This Be Love? is no better than Poison.

Yeah, that makes a whole lotta sense dude "
Eddie Van Halen is a great guitar player, no doubt. Eruption, You Really Got Me, etc. are all great songs, with fantastic guitar playing. He totally revolultionized shredding. BUT Either way, he's an asshole and a drunk. He looks 20 years older then he really is, he's fucked himself up so bad. At the Dimebag Funeral, he was dead drunk, trying to fuck up Zakk Wylde's speech. David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, everyone who has been in the band complains about Eddie.

Dude, so Eddie being shitfaced at Dime's funeral surprises or shocks you?! HAHA. He's an alcoholic! Duh. This guy drinks all the time, imagine having to show up and bury a fellow axe slinger who just got fuckin' shot? Wouldn't you knock back a few?
Regardless, you overlook the most important part, and that is the fact Eddie actually SHOWED UP to the funeral. The man paid his respects to DD. And if you read the report of DD's funeral in Guitar World mag, you'll see Eddie actually gave Dime the ORIGINAL black & yellow axe that appears on the cover of Van Halen's second album. DD loved that guitar, so Eddie gave him the original, and so DD was buried with that guitar.
Once again, yeah, that Eddie...he's such an asshole!!

the first 4 van halen albums changed the way i looked at & listened to music. eddie created a guitar style that has not & can not be duplicated. eddies guitar style was the perfect compliment to roth's fun loving, anything goes attitude. is there any album from 1978 that shreds like the vh debut? that album crushes anything from that time period. fair warning is still the landmark vh album, though, imho.

...Eddie's running low on booze money again. Fuck this, I'll just mail him a twelve-pack and save him the trouble of putting out a book. And because of the Van Hagar days and the hideous mess that was Van Halen III, it's gonna be a twelve-pack of the nastiest, cheapest, most rat-shit beer known to man... wait for it...

I feel that Edward is one of the most influential guitarists of all time. To this day no one has come close to matching the tone or sound he created on VH1. The entertainment value that Roth provided and the guitar virtuosity of Eddie made Van Halen a stand out among the Hard Rock acts of that era and today. Unfortunately nothing lasts forever. With the creation of Van HAGAR and alcohol abuse Mr. Van Halen has fallen off the map of musical creativity and landed in mediocrity.

if AllAn Holdsworth SAYS YOU ARE GOOD, THEN YOU MUST BE GOOD..

That's exactly what I thought breakermetal!!
Dude, Holdsworth is a fuckin' MONSTER. I think Eddie himself has said Allan is the best. So has Vai and others. So for Holdsworth to say Eddie is good...well, he actually says Eddie is a "FANTASTIC" player, man, you know Eddie is the real deal. I heard they hung out and jammed back in the day, so I'm curious to see if Holdsworth talks about all of that in this book.
COMMENT | EDDIE AN ASSHOLE.... posted by : MARS 9/14/2005 2:56:50 PM
FIRST OFF, EDDIE'S AN ALCOHOLIC AND THAT CAN CHANGE YOU. SECONDLY, I HEARD EDDIE'S ACTUALLY A SWEETHEART OF A GUY INSIDE. ANY ASSHOLE OR ALCOHOLIC THINGS HE'S DONE, HE'S ONLY DONE TO HIMSELF AND THOSE CLOSE TO HIM. I LOVE DIMEBAG AND DON'T LIKE THE WAY EDDIE ACTED AT HIS MEMORIAL, BUT, LIKE I SAID, HE ONLY DOES IT TO HIMSELF. THE FACT IS-EDDIE IS THE SHIT! PERIOD! I MEAN, HOW MANY OF YOU GUYS HEARD EDDIE FOR THE FIRST TIME AND GOT GOOSEBUMPS?!!! YOU KNOW YOU HAD TO PICK UP A GUITAR AFTER THAT-THAT'S HIS CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIETY-HIS PLAYING, NOT HIS PERSONALITY. IT'S NOT LIKE I HAVE TO HANG OUT WITH THE GUY. HE CHANGED GUITAR AND THE WAY IT WAS PLAYED AND THAT'S A FACT. AND C.THOMAS HOWELL, YOU'RE RIGHT, EDDIE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT ALBUMS USED MULTI TRACKING-HE PLAYED THE RYTHEM AND LEAD LIKE HE WOULD LIVE-THE GUY IS INCREDIBLE AND TO ME IS A MODERN DAY BEETHOVEN. GIVE EDDIE VAN HALEN HIS DUE...

..i think what you meant is that Eddie played one guitar part thru one guitar track. Anyhow, I am still a fan of Eddie's, and I can understand his alcoholism, being a recovering alcoholic myself. It's just taking him so long to get back from it. I was looking over my VH CD collection the other day, making sure that it was still all complete. The man kickstarted my guitar playing and I have still retain full respect for him. Saw them in 98 in Devore, CA and that was the highlight of my life.
