PHILIP ANSELMO Performs With EYEHATEGOD At NYC's Legendary CBGB Club

Former PANTERA and current SUPERJOINT RITUAL/DOWN frontman Philip Anselmo filled in on guitar for EYEHATEGOD last night (August 15) at the infamous CBGB club in New York City. It was Anselmo's first public appearance since the murder of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN) and Philip appeared to be "healthy, upbeat, and in a great mood," according to a BLABBERMOUTH.NET visitor who attended the gig. "He was mingling with the crowd and very outgoing. It was a historic show."
Before launching into their set, the band shared a joint onstage and Anselmo took the microphone, dedicating the performance to his "brother, Dimebag Darrell," according to Billboard.com.
As previously reported, EYEHATEGOD/SUPERJOINT RITUAL guitarist and DOWN drummer Jimmy Bower recently told Metal Maniacs magazine that he is "sure we'll do another DOWN record. I've talked to Phil and everybody else. Everybody's expressed interest in wanting to do a DOWN record, so that's basically all it takes. Hopefully within the next year or two that can happen. DOWN records are fun. Phil's doing a lot better as far as handling [Dimebag's death]. It's been a big wake-up call for a lot of people over the the last five, six months. People are doing cool things with their lives; cool, positive things. Let's save metal!"
DOWN is the New Orleans "supergroup" featuring Anselmo, Bower, Pepper Keenan (guitars, C.O.C.), Rex Brown (bass, ex-PANTERA) and Kirk Windstein (guitars, CROWBAR). The band's sophomore album, "Down II", was released in March 2002 on Elektra Records.
DOWN headlined the second stage at the 2002 Ozzfest.

I always wondered why live he never did rhythm behind Dime's leads (on tracks where there was rhythm behind it in the studio). I always knew he could play, but don't really know if he is any good...? Anybody go to this show?

Hope to see you soon Phil. I know Dime's death hurt Phil the most (Aside from Vinnie of course) because of the fact that they had been going back and forth right around that time in the press. Phil said a few things we all know he probably wishes he could take back, but the bottom line is he loved Dime and that was very obvious in the statement he released right after Dime was murdered.
I'm not a huge SJR fan but I'd love to hear a new Down album. Either way though it's good to hear Phil in a positive light. I also hope he has somehow contacted Vinnie and apologized for some of the things that went on before Dime was murdered. There is no Pantera without Dime, but it would be cool if they could be on speaking terms again.

Phil did say some seriously uncalled for harsh shit right before Dime was murdered...and whether or not some paranoid schizophrenic read it and was inspired by it or not, which we'll never know for sure...Phil never wanted Darrell dead and the actions of a complete psycho cannot be blamed on someone's stupid comment in a magazine...Phil has to live with his words the rest of his life and I'm sure it tears him up inside. I've also read/posted on every DimeBag related thread since Dec 2004 ( became a BM member 12-10), and yeah ,I'm still pissed at Phil.
I don't directly blame Phil for Dimes death, but consider:
This fucking psycho shot Dime and tried for Vinnie , why?
Because "they" broke up Pantara.
Bullshit, it was Phil with all his side projects starting with "Nola" in 1994 that kept the constant wedge between himself and the Bro's.
All Dime and Vinnie wanted to do was play for people, like they had been doing since Dime was 16 years old!
They formed Gasoline for New Years party jams, Phil tired of that around "97",... Tres Diablos with Rex just for some kickass blues style goodtimes, and teamed up with DAC to bring some countrified metal to all those interested.
After the RTS tour ended in Japan, Phil became aloof and wasn't returning phone calls from anybody, including management.
Then the verbal sparring through the media/ Mags. insued.
The Bro's wanted to play music period. So they formed Damageplan.
Meanwhile Phil continues his hate spew. Thats always been a problem for him, particularly from the mid 90's on... The time he spent on his soapbox talking shit to the crowd cost the fans 3 to 5 songs a show. This is something Dime and Vinnie acknowledged.
All the fuck they wanted to do was play music!
Somewhere along the line this psycho gets it in his head that The Bro's were the reason Pantara wern't together anymore...Note: it is known that the Psycho was at the SJR Columbus show 2 months before 12-8. Why didn't he go after Phil?
I think he was intimadated and in awe of Phil. Remember he claimed Pantara stole "his" lyrics. Phil was in his head. Perhaps he thought he was doing Phils will, for if he truly wanted to kill the guilty party of breaking up Pantara, he had his chance at the SJR show. Maybe he wanted to Martyrize Dime and Vinnie, although I doubt the fuck could concieve thoughts on that level.
No, I'm not saying Phil pulled the trigger, but I have little doubt that he loaded the chamber.
All that being said, Phil is a great frontman and somewhat accomplished musician, and I believe he is sincerely contrite about all the circumstances around Dimes death, even though he said the violent shit about Dime 1 week before the shit went down, I'm sure he felt as if a part of him died as well.
They were brothers through war after war , fighting both alongside and with each other, thats something thats immearsurable in love and respect. I'm pretty sure Phil would give his right arm to have Dime back today..
Phil,
I wish you the best and hope that 1 day you'll be able to patch things up with your other brother, Vinnie, although I fear that will be along time from now, if ever.

The reason Phil hated the brothers was cuz they were freaking out over him being on smack. Phil, to them, was killing himself and the band. Remember the KNAC interview. The fucker was completely gone and during his sabattical from Pantera he only got worse. It was obvious he had started using again.
I got tired pretty quick of his BS about all the bands he was in and Pantera was just one. His crying about DOWN losing support from the label, SJR, etc......
In the end it wasn't Phil who killed Dime it was Hathan Gale.
Phil did however crush Dime's spirit when he up and quit without warning.
So as i see it, he's an asshole dago, not a killer.

After Dimebag's death everyone wanted Phil's head on a platter because of all the shit he said about Dime. O.K. I agree that Phil was being a bit of an asshole for talkin' trash, but the way people came on him after what went down was pretty unfair. Honestly, I kind of hated the way people were treating Phil after Dimebag's death. Put yourselves in his shoes for a minute. He never got a chance to to make peace w/ Dimebag or say say goodbye and I'm sure it's eating him up inside. I hope that the only good thing that comes out of Dime's death is that Phil and Vinnie make peace. All I'm saying is that stop listening to all the stupid rumors and bullshit and let Phil live his life. By the way, I'm looking forward to a new Down album and I'm glad Phil is out and about.

Its good to hear Philip is getting back to what he does best, creating music. All of his other bands rule but PANTERA is where he changed our lives. Philip did NOT kill Dime and im sure he hurts more than we will ever know. I just hope that Philip cleans up and lives thru this nightmare. I may disagree with some of his nationalistic views but the guy rocks. I like all of the bands he is or was in: Viking Crown, Necrophagia, Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual, Christ Inversion, Eibon and so on. He's got great taste in music and is one hell of a frontman/singer/composer. ROCK ON!!!

That drugs can destroy you no matter how much talent you have. I'm sure he feels awful about Dime's death. Heck, I still feel awful about it and I never even met Dime personally. What this boils down to though is that Philip Anselmo made some really stupid choices, and Pantera broke up, and now Dime is dead. Did Phil kill him? Absolutely not. In my mind though, this is even more of a shame because I think that the whole controversy happened because of drugs. Phil Anselmo obviously didn't have his head on straight, said some things he didn't even mean, was falling asleep in interviews and was at least momentarily incapable of rational thought. The sad thing is that a great guitarist is dead and Phil has words left in him that need to be said but will now remain unsaid.

Scott Weiland is proof of that. Nobody ever talks about Rex leaving Pantera do they? Or the fact that Rex left Pantera and decided to work with Phil in Down. The fact is, as much as I love Dime, he and Vinnie are pretty much the Van Halen brothers. They run the Pantera show. They wanted to take Pantera in a new direction and try new sounds{ala Reinventing the Steel} Phil and Rex left because of that. But you dont hear that cause Rex is so quiet and Phil talked alot of crap. Just check out Damage Plan. That would have been the next Pantera album if Phil and Rex would have stayed and did it their way. The thing that sucks about the whole thing is that the brothers talked shit too. They were bashing him about his drug problems and a bunch of other stuff. People seem to forget they did drugs at one time too. Just check out the Pantera home videos. Their drugtaking was just not as public. Im tired of when tragedy hits people look for someone to blame. Try the guy who fucking shot him, or the mother that bought her mental son the gun. Dime and Vinnie are quoted as saying that with Damageplan they were striving for a different direction from sounding like Pantara.
Do you really think that the Damageplan album would have been the next Pantara album? No fucking way! Dime had riffs for years on his 4 track which he would never use for Pantara material, this was another ourlet that got its chance when Phil drifted apart for a substantial period of time.

some kids think they know so much about the private lives of pantera members by watching their home videos. Hell, they probably even think Kirk Windstein was Incredible Hulk.
all I can care about is the music they produce. but w/ the loss of dimebag that is an exception and can't help and feel sorry for what happened. You can just tell by all those friends that surfaced expressing their thoughts and feelings. And by that we knew how much Dimebag was of a good man when he was here.

You KNOW for a fact that he's just a tad paranoid to go out in public. Sure, he said what he said about Dime, but I don't think he's ever going to live that down and for that I feel for the guy because he's going to have to contend with the possibility of some nutjob wanting revenge for Dime's death.
I wish him success and may he forgive himself before venturing out into the world again. Because it's obvious that a lot of people havne't and never will forgive him.

it's great that he is back since he is the mack daddy of frontmen however, will it ever be the same? i question his will to go out there and perform to his best (and we all know how awesome that is) as his voice on the last sjr album was nothing short of awful - nothing like the man who was inspiring us all on a vulgar display of power. still glimpses, but not as powerful nor textured as once it was. is his heart still in playing as heavy as we all like it? there is nothing in metal which compares to hearing phil roar at the end of five minutes alone (when the riffage gets heavy) but will we hear anything of the like again? i guess the big man will have to deliver again. with regard to the pantera/dime situation, what's done is done and tragic and i was furious when i first heard of phil's involvement in proceedings but time heals and now i want all to be forgiven and for my heroes to, if not be the best of buddies, at least forgive and we can all have closure to this sordid business.
