VENOM: 'MMV' 25th Anniversary Box Set Due In September - Aug. 20, 2005
Castle Music has set a September 26 release date for a four-CD 25th anniversary box set from black metal pioneers VENOM, entitled "MMV".

Aside from the music, the box set also contains an essay by Classic Rock and TotalRock Radio's Malcolm Dome and brand new Cronos artwork is included, alongside rare photos and images of memorabilia from his personal collection. First, I am a huge Venom fan + have most of their cd's, incl the 2002 Castle re-releases.

If you have these, I am not seeing a lot you wouldn't already have...these re-releases contain a bunch of bonus tracks and include a lot of the stuff mentioned above.

Songs like Bitch Witch, Mistress of the Whip, DOA have been available for awhile now.

And a lot of those live "Assault" records were truly horrible-sounding, awful recordings, no joke. I don't see how it's possible to "remaster" these..they can only sound so good.

I know it sounds like I'm bashing the band, but when you pick this apart, doesn't look like there's too much that isn't already out there.

On the other hand, if you're new to Venom, this is probably a good place to start.

" "MMV" is the first ever fully comprehensive four-CD box set that traces the entire career of this seminal metal band"

- this is bullshit. It only covers albums that Cronos sang on. It has plenty of material from Welcome to Hell, Black Metal, At War With Satan, and Possessed, but it contains very little from Calm Before the Storm, Cast in Stone and none from Resurrection. That's only 6 out of the 10 Venom albums!! I figured Cronos wouldn't include material from Tony "Demolition" Man Dolan years since Cronos has such an enormously HUGE ego that nothing that Venom recorded without him 'counts'. Bullshit. Cronos ISN'T Venom, he was only 1/3 Venom.

There's also nothing really "special" about this boxset. Most of the 'rare' tracks were added to the Castle re-issues of their first albums. The only really rare song is Senile Decay, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna buy an expensive box set for one damn song.

Nice try Cronos, but no Cigar. This isn't much better than the shitload of other Venom compilations that infect every record store shelf under the "V" section.
