HELLFEST Organizer Suspected Of 'Terrorizing' Arena Parking Lot Following Cancellation - Aug. 21, 2005
Scott Frost of The Trentonian has issued the following report:

A coup of screaming Hellfest supporters terrorized the parking lot of the Sovereign Bank Arena [Friday, August 19], turning the spot of the canceled three-day event into their own personal demolition derby.

Witnesses said the Hellfest bus, a yellow school bus painted in the concert's logo that was used to promote the event, was seen doing doughnuts, knocking down traffic cones and driving wildly through the South Broad Street parking lot around the same time the first guitar swipe was scheduled to start the event.

"Their actions speaks for itself," said Eric Cuthbertson, the arena's general manager, who announced the event was canceled on Wednesday.

Police suspect organizer Shawn Van Der Poel recklessly drove the bus into the lot and jumped some curbs before speeding the bus back out onto South Broad Street.

Concert organizers kept vigil at Trenton's Conduit, across the street from the SBA, where the tattooed vegan hardcore music fan admitted taking part in the bus ride, but jokingly said he wasn't the culprit police were looking for.

"It's just been nonstop chaos," Van Der Poel said. "We rolled into the bus, and as we pulled around the corner, I don't know what happened, but the guy driving the bus just got it in him to drive over every single cone they had in the parking lot.

"I don't really care what people think at this point. We are very emotional about this. And it just looks like the biggest failure."

Trenton police officers chased the bus through the South Ward's tiny streets, eventually locating the bus abandoned on Ferry Street.

"It definitely shows you what was going to be of this event," a Trenton cop said as a wrecker came in to tow the bus.

Rob Fusco, vocalist for the hardcore band MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD, arrived at the arena the same time the bus went on its rampage.

He said the bus ran a red light and headed into the parking lot with many kids hanging out of the windows screaming and sticking up devil-horn hand signals.

Chief John McEwan, of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, said the bus was unregistered.

He said street intelligence points to Van Der Poel as the renegade bus driver.

The Hellfest organizer will be charged with a number of summonses including reckless driving and failing to adhere to a red light, the officer said.

Police eventually located Van Der Poel after he was caught yelling, "It is what it is," from a megaphone in a truck driving south on Broad Street with an undercover officer closely behind.

He was questioned and then let go after police ran the vehicle's plates.

this is why i HATE COPS!... ""It definitely shows you what was going to be of this event," are they ignorant? or just rambling morons?

the reason why this all went down was because a concert of this magnitude was CANCELLED... none of this would have happened if SBA werent a bunch of corporate FUCKS. i rest my case. fuck off trenton.

this was a concert... and it was a 3 day concert... im not emo, i was going for a few bands only... unearth, chimaira, madball, killswitch, just to name a few.. and its been a great show in years past, just like the MASS metal fest, the ohio metal shows, and all these weekend long MUSIC festivals.

everyone on here has opinions about emo kids, hardcore kids, metal kinds... cant you all understand its simply MUSIC? thats the problem with this scene today... you idiiots try to put things into genre, sub genre, sub sub genre categories, and that fucks shit up even more.

i was at "the show must go on", and not only the fans, but the BANDS INVOLVED were upset about the cancellation.

people from japan, puerto rico, california, canada, and germany were at starland that night... and the show was only 12.00... that was done to support MUSIC.

madball said it best on this evening "it doesnt matter if your metal, metal core, emo, or hard core... we're ALL family.

unite, dont divide.

assholes.

Metal kids dont even like each other, how on earth would the good portion of them wanna unite with hardcore kids? Go over to the RR messageboard and you'll find 300 "kvlt" metal kids fighting over the "trvenss" of "SatansBlackendDungeon" hailing from Brazil.

I love Hellfest, but these kids are kinda idiotic for making such a bold stand for something that won't happen no matter how much they protest! I admire the message, but get real!

BTW - The bus incident did sound pretty funny though!

“A coup of screaming Hellfest supporters terrorized the parking lot of the Sovereign Bank Arena”

Terrorized the parking lot? Oh the poor thing… What has this world come to when innocent pavement is victimized by marauding yam-fueled, vegetable-inked- plant-fucking hooligans?

What’s next? Tofu-filled grenades hurled willy-nilly at peace-loving garden gnomes? Plucking young Tomatoes before their ripe????

STOP THE MADNESS! The Vegan Community has a heinous new leader that goes by the name of Shawn Van De Camps, a.k.a. “DEVIL BEAN”. the PARKING CONE KILLER!!! FEAR HIM! AND HIS RAMPAGING SCHOOL-BUS OF HELLISH (YET EMOTIONAL) DEATH!!

well im not going to sit here and insult you...even tho you are a HICK BASTARD. how immature are you? I solely made the comment that the cops shut down ANOTHER show for no reason what so ever.. It was a show put together for the bands playing a CANCELLED hellfest.

FUCK YOU's go out to:
1. THE SOVERIGN BANK ARENA for cancelling hellfest due to a last minute call for 1 million more dollars
2. THe cops of NJ for shutting down "what the hell fest" for no reason what so ever.
3. The cops in Utah for illegally shutting down a LEGAL rave this weekend. THey used tear gas, and other weapons such as tazers. *this is NOT metal related, but the concert had permits, licenses, and security, as well as undercovers throughout*.

THANK YOUS

1. The bands - for getting together, taking matters into their own hands, and playing shows so that the fans who came for hellfest had a weekend to remember.
2. The hellfest committe - for not doubling over and taking it in the ass, but showing that you were wronged.
3. Everyone on here who supports concerts in general, no matter who the fuck plays. if it wasnt for the bands, then there'd be no fan.

this was a very bad weekend for MUSIC in general.

if you assholes cant understand what the fuck has been going on, then you really need to grow up.
especially people who insult someones family... at least my uncle isnt my father who fucked my aunt whose my mother you stupid fucking texas prick bastard.

"The cry of "It is what it is," yesterday became the slogan for those disgusted by the arena’s decision to shut down the show.

Comcast-Spectacor Event Coordinator Fran Rodowicz was quoted as saying those four fateful words when police escorted the Hellfest crew off the property Wednesday morning."

Hmmm...maybe I am counting wrong, but that really looks like five words. Just a thought.

And why the hell would they use this as a slogan?? I don't see how it can be motivating at all. Just let it go...

You guys have to get your facts straight. First off this was not a tour...most of you know that but one kid is clueless. And think about this...why would this bus incident take place?....hmmm would it be all over the CB scanners ....the same ones the media tune into....would it bring every media outlet from Fox, to CBS, to the Trentonian out to the arena? Would that then give a means to spread the truth with printed documents outlining the contract and the BS that was pulled to have the show stopped. Would the promoter then spend thousands of dollars to go to court as a last resort to have a ruling against the arena? Would there then be a law suit? Get your story straight and facts right. I don't care if you were not attending Hellfest, this is how the corporate world works and what they do to set back the Independents. This is a DIY event. Think about all the time and money wasted from peoples personal lives. Think about the livlihoods that have been jeapordized because some suit doesn't like YOU. It could be Ozzy, Megadeth, Slayer, and Maiden....or it could be Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, Hatebreed and H2O. It's all music that goes against the grain...its all part of one big scene that the "suits" don't like and they won this battle. They got what they wanted, but the war is not over and Hellfest will be taking it to the courts for their just cause.

Get informed people... http://www.hellfest.com/HFStatement01.pdf
