VOIVOD To Return To Studio This Month To Complete 'Definitive' New Album
- Sep. 1, 2005
|
|
|
VOIVOD singer Denis "Snake" Belanger has told the Quebec newspaper Le Soleil that the band will return to the recording studio in late September to resume work on their 14th album, tentatively due in early 2006 via The End Records.
Only hours before he slipped into a coma last week due to complications from colon cancer, VOIVOD guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour gave the group's drummer, Michel "Away" Langevin, instructions to go to the guitarist's personal computer and lift the final guitar tracks Piggy had been working on for the upcoming CD. "He had to know that his days were numbered. And he wanted to make sure that the album would get done even after he was gone," stated Piggy's friend Lucien Francœur.
According to Snake, the upcoming album will be "the definitive VOIVOD" effort. "I am sure that Piggy would trust us to complete the project as a tribute to him," he said.
In a recent interview with Billboard.com, VOIVOD bassist Jason Newsted (ex-METALLICA) spoke about the material slated to appear on the group's next CD. "It's the most complete demos I've ever been involved in," he said. "[VOIVOD singer] Snake has already chosen his effects — exact timing of milliseconds for delay. We've had a long time to develop the demos, so there's about 23 or 25 songs that are absolutely listenable right now."
VOIVOD will be issuing their first DVD in October covering the band's original lineup period (1983-1991). Scheduled for release on October 25 via Music Video Distributors, "DVOD-1" features all the '80s videos, plus rare live and studio performances of classic VOIVOD songs. The band are also tentatively planning on releasing two more DVDs during the coming months. "DVOD-2" will contain footage shot during the Eric Forrest era of the band, while "DVOD-3" will cover the band's most recent lineup, including Newsted (a.k.a. Jasonic).
This past spring, D'Amour laid down guitar tracks for a reunion CD from the legendary AUT'CHOSE, a '70s band from Montreal. That album, "Chansons D'épouvante", was released in May via Disques Artic.
As previously reported, D'Amour died late Friday (Aug. 26) in a Montreal hospital from complications of advanced colon cancer. The 45-year-old guitarist had been diagnosed this summer and that the disease had spread to his liver, rendering the condition inoperable. Last Thursday, D'Amour slipped into a coma and never regained consciousness. He was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death.
Piggy's funeral will be held today (Sept. 1) in Jonquière, Quebec.

I heard about Piggy's passing and it's a shame. Total waste of talent. Anyway, I'm happy that the band is continuing to finish what they started. That's definately what Piggy would have wanted.
It really pisses me off that in the past couple of months, it's been one heavy metal death after another. If only the colon cancer had been detected earlier, Piggy would have been okay and still be rockin'.
My condolences go out to Snake, Away, Jason Newsted, and all the friends, family, and fans of Piggy.
R.I.P. Denis "Piggy" D'Amour You Carry On
Please, we cannot have anymore deaths in the metal community.

Piggy was one of the greats. I'm glad we'll get to hear this final album. I still think it would be bitchin' to have Blacky come in and lay down some Blower Bass tracks. No disrespect to Jason. By the way, C. Frankenstein - where did you hear that Jason was NOT with Voivod. He's been committed to the 'Vod since the day he joined.
R.I.P. Denis - can't wait to hear your final music...

Didnt the members of Voivod grow up in a really fucked up industrial town with chemicals in the air? I remember Piggy thinking that this may have contributed to his brain tumor he had earlier..I think it probably has to do with this, how sad.

Yeah, they grew up in a town that was pretty much comprised of a bauxite processing plant; aluminum is extracted from bauxite, btw. I will be buying this.

Piggy lived in Jonquière (Where i live right now). It's true that we have industries here like Alcan (aluminiun) and a Paper company. We live in a town with lot of pollution but there are people who lived here and died at 90 like anywhere else and studies don't show more cancer related problems here than anywhere else.

I don't know when Piggy left Jonquière but on 45 years, i guess he really lived here 25 max. It's not like people here are sick all the time.

The lesson that should be learned by all from this tragedy of Piggy's passing, and so many others from cancer and other diseases is to GET REGULAR CHECKUPS! Toom any are passing away too young due to not getting to the doctor regularly for checkups, etc.
RIP Piggy!

No I'm kidding too.
Kull: I wonder why you visited Quebec (doc mailloux). U sure you're not still there eating a poutine?
le.dieu: I always thought you and Kull were both from France for some reason, but little by little...
Voivod is kinda one of my prides, y'know, they're in my "blood" too. 'Le monde est petit' as we say.
I just bought the new Opeth, only heard the 1st song yet, it's FUCKING AWESOME. I don't care what people are going to say, I don't buy too much "death" or death-related material, but I've been into them for a while... Yep, to me it sounds like album of the year. I feel it's even stronger than NEVERMORE's (which I also bought when it came out). The OPETH cd is soooo fucking solid. Don't get me wrong, NM's is still a masterpiece.
To those who bought OPETH (supporting the band), ENJOY!!!!!!
Now playing: ... well, OPETH, duh!
