I too was at the AC show in the balcony.
The sales figures don't seem to be so bad. Afterall was anyone really expecting much. The only two well known bands on that tour are Megadeth and Fear Factory. The others with the exception of Dillenger, DKL, & Bobaflex were great, but all aren't as popular. Although I have to say overall this tour was better than Ozzfest this year.
Dave mentioned there is a good chance it will run next year, so let see.

How could this be , back in the day (80s) Megadeth or Dream Theater would have filled 3 times the capacity of any of these arenas. Fuck I wish metal could make a come back, but not with the new Jokers that call themselves singers in those awesome bands. i.e. Shadows Fall, In Flames, Killswitch, etc... Peace

HAHHA! when Mustaine said that it was doing better than expected i was pretty surprised when those figures were released. if they were just 'better than expected' why the fuck did he bother putting this shit on in the first place? he is just asking to go bust.

Who cares what the attendance numbers are? It's a solid lineup and it's a reasonable cost. Numbers like this just show how pathetic the U.S. metal scene can be when it comes to fan support and such. I don't think there was enough Nu-Metal/Metalcore on this bill to ensure that the kiddies would attend, especially after they've already dropped $100+ to attend Ozzfest this summer. Basically, the average number of people attending Gigantour is about 3100 a show. That's really not a bad number for a tour like this in the U.S., considering that it's comprised mostly of older bands and progressive-oriented music. Just because they only play to 3000 people in an 18.000 seat venue, so what? Does anyone really think this tour would come remotely close to selling that number of seats?!
The current lineup put on one of the best Megadeth shows I've seen and heard in years, regardless of the absence of Junior. Megadeth fans who are boycotting this tour due to his absence are missing out on something. Oh well, your loss.
to think 43% attendance is anything but a disaster is the real Enemy of Reality.
COMMENT | Better than Ozzfest??? posted by : Dirk_Digler 9/1/2005 3:40:32 PM
Are you insane? Maiden, Killswitch, Zombie and Sabbath tore it up at Shoreline, CA. All 20k+ in attendance would agree.
Only 3540 in FLA. That's a joke!

The ticket sales are not too low, the venue size is the problem. This kind of bill isnt' intended for some of these big places they booked.

I have been to so many concerts since I turned 15, I am 26 now and I can tell you this was by far one of the best concerts/line-ups I have been to since Ozzfest '98. The show was great. I wonder how they compile the attendance records. Because the West Palm show, the seats hold 7,000 people, per the venue website. And the seats were FULL during Megadeth. So I guess they do not count radio ticket giveaways, etc...which they should...since they are part of the attendance...eh, whatever. People are retarded. Most bands on Ozzfest suck these days, they are commercialized, formerly known as underground metal...Hot Topic, fucking mallcore bullshit...give me a break, listen to real metal like Megadeth, Nevermore, Anthrax, Dream Theater, Symphony X, etc. Don't get me wrong, I like Shadows Fall, Killswitch, Maiden, Soilwork...but man...the amount off bullshit bands on Ozzfest, not to mention the ridiculous prices, is enough for me to not go. I'd rather have a quality tour like Gigantour, with better bands, better prices. I hope there is a Gigantour 2006...
COMMENT | posted by : agentpatience 9/1/2005 4:18:30 PM
You know, the numbers are pretty consistent, but its the inconsistency in the size of the venues they booked that makes this look really bad. Could you imagine going to a 15,000 seat amphitheater and see it barely a 5th full? Why do metal bands think outdoor amphitheaters are a good venue for this kind of music anyway? I think they're downright awful. You either have to sit or stand in the same place all night, or you can sit on the lawn where you can't see the bands and the sound quality is not even close to worth the price.
COMMENT | Megadeth posted by : ChrisASchrader 9/1/2005 4:35:32 PM
I heard the show they played here was pretty badass even to a non fans standards and Dave muttered not ONE word about any "rival bands" so thats a plus. Maybe next album I'll purchase but I doubt it because I ain't cared for any Megadeth since Youth as I said before but if It had anything on it that resembled the greatness that was tuesdays performance I may download it because I don't think I could put my cash into Dave Mustaine's greedy hands yet. He's said far too much shit and I hate people that talk shit about others when it comes to this. It's music and not the fucking Osbournes and we don't need our metal heroes feuding with each other.

Gigantour is one of those concerts that is going to have a draw somewhere between 2-5000. There just isn't a lot of venues that adequately support that venue, and Mustaine wanted it to be a "Fest" like environment. He didn't honestly think that he was going to sell out 15000 seat stadiums. Do you morons really believe that the promoters and the marketing people for the record labels really missed the mark by that much??

AC show was pretty cool. The fact that you could enter and exit the venue at will was a HUGE plus. I think the $53 ticket price scared a lot of people away. I got two tix for free day before the show - otherwise I would not have paid that much for tix.

intersting post note about west palm....the entire second stage was scrapped because of a storm that afternoon.....so that didnt help matters...
seriously, the lower concert attendance numbers should be expected for a festival on its first year. And a sold out show in Orlando should basically show what market this tour is aiming for. The smaller sized theaters, obviously.
It might come back next year, maybe scaled down with no second stage. I know a lot of people we're confused as to start times and missed many of the second stage bands.
oh yeah and fuck emerje

Did bad. Mustaine needs a reality show before the next one. But seriously why does everyone bag on mustaine for being honest. The man is a role model and is , as you people call it "metal". We come here and post OUR opinions whether they be smart or death threats. Some read and care some don't. Same deal with this guy except he has some celebrity status. If you ask me that takes even more balls. He followed his dream , it came true and he is still himself and will say exactly what is on his mind and I hope that never changes.

Were it ever to come here (maybe that's wishful thinking on my part, as New Zealand promoters don't seem to think anybody listens to anything but top-40 hip-hop and dance music), it'd sell out like a motherfucker. We're TOTALLY starved for good metal here. Fortunately, AC/DC often come here (Phil Rudd lives in New Zealand, after all), and not only do they sell out everywhere they play, there's about five times more people outside who couldn't get in. I can understand why a band would want to aim for the American (i.e. most 'lucrative') market, but realistically, there ARE other countries besides America, continental Europe and Japan, and they DO have fans there.

the tour didn't have enough well known bands, and megadeth had just finished the Blackmail tour. Nobody really knows of Nevermore or Symphony X here in America. People know bands like As I Lay Dying and Killswitch Engage in the US. Now honestly, tell me who you would rather see, Nevermore and SX or AILD and KE? Plus, the fact that Ozzy is in Ozzfest adds a lot. Then there's Maiden which probably brought half the crowds to each Ozzfest. I mean c'mon is it was Megadeth and Maiden it'd be a question of who wouldnt go instead of who would
To the Toronto show on saturday. The only band I want to see is Fear Factory. 8th fuckin time! I've seen Megadeth a few years back @ the same venue, opening up for Motley Crue. As for Hello? I would much rather see As I Lay Dying and Killswitch.

I would rather see Symphony X and Nevermore any day, brother! I'm with you on Maiden. They should co-headline with 'Deth and schedule every fuckin' show on the same night as Ozz-fest. At half the ticket price, with two bands that can remember the lyrics to their own songs (plus a lot of underground bands and LESS nu-metal bands) I think honestly that Gigantour would give Ozz-fest a run for its money.

Some of these 15-20k size venues cannot be cheap to book, and I would think the local promoters can't be doing too well on these shows. 3500 in a 19k venue is a disaster no matter what kind of spin they try to put on it.....

Uh, yeah, dumbass - they did. Do you have any clue how much money it costs to run a 15,000 stadium for the night? You can bet your ass that promoters got SOAKED on this tour (except for Olando, but remember that this is the town that launched boy bands and nu-metal - they support crappy music). There are PLENTY of smaller venues that could have hosted this gig. No promoter in his right mind would say "Let's book a stadium, even though we're only gonna sell it to 1/4 capacity."
