Metal/Hard Rock Musicians Pay Tribute To BLACK SABBATH's 'Paranoid'
- Sep. 18, 2005
|
|
|
BLACK SABBATH's second album, "Paranoid", was the subject of the "Trailblazer" column in the August 2005 issue of the U.K.'s Total Guitar magazine, which is devoted to albums that changed the face of guitar music. The following quotes from the article illustrate just how important the album is to many of rock and metal's major guitarists:
Slash (VELVET REVOLVER, ex-GUNS N' ROSES): "There's just something about that whole record that, when you're a kid and you're turned onto it, it's like a whole different world. It just opens up your mind to another dimension… 'Paranoid' is the whole SABBATH experience; very indicative of what SABBATH meant at the time. Tony's [Iommi] playing style — doesn’t matter whether it's off 'Paranoid' or if it's off 'Heaven and Hell' — it's very distinctive."
James Hetfield (METALLICA): "SABBATH got me started on all that evil-sounding shit, and it's stuck with me. Tony Iommi is the king of the heavy riff."
Scott Ian (ANTHRAX): "'Paranoid' is an amazing album. I always get the question in every interview I do, 'What are your top five metal albums?' I make it easy for myself and always say the first five SABBATH albums, especially 'Paranoid'."
Dave Grohl (FOO FIGHTERS, ex-NIRVANA): "I love BLACK SABBATH. They made an amazing contribution to music today. Almost every band that made it big in the 1990s owes a debt to them."
Mark Tremonti (ALTER BRIDGE, ex-CREED): "It's pretty much the trademark album of the originators of heavy metal. Tony Iommi is very different to a lot of guitar players, his phrasing is very different…his riffs and his rhythm playing is the shit on that album."
The article also outlines the history of the album and the stories behind some of the tracks as well as a few words from Tony himself. "Iron Man" is also featured in the magazine's "Learn to Play" section.

I prefer the four albums that came after it to Paranoid... Master of Reality is heavier, Volume 4 is more hypnotic, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath has more variety, and Sabotage is more progressive.
Not to take anything away from Paranoid because it's a great album, but a lot of those songs have suffered from overexposure, and a lot of that has to do with Ozzy playing half that album whenever he performs live.
War Pigs still manages to pack a punch, but Iron Maiden, Paranoid, and Fairies Wear Boots have been covered/performed/featured so many times that they've lost a bit of their magic.

i'd love to say i have a favorite sabbath album, but how can i pick one above the other? if paranoid wasnt played out as much, maybe, because the songs on that album are catchy as hell, but masters of reality, vol4, sabbath bloody sabbath..it doesnt get much better

anyway... paranoid was definately a killer album. the point here isnt that its sabbath's best album, but their first mega-prolific album. not to take anything away from the self-titled (NIB forever \m/). it's just the album that "made" them.

Trashed and Zero the Hero and Born Again does nothing for me. You have to give Tony and Geezer a lot of credit as musicians and songwriters. I can't think of a stronger writing team that has lasted as long. Shit, if they wanted to they could write a classic right now, problem is, anything with Ozzy automatically becomes diminished. I'd like to see Pepper Keenan as lead Vocal and rythm G . I think that would be interesting.

Mechanix84 I agree, those 4 are by far the best Sabbath+Ozzy albums. Master Of Reality is my favourite, you get albums these days that are twice as long and still have nowhere near as much quality music as Sabbath's Master Of Reality or Rainbow's Rising (also 34 minutes long).

all Sabbath albums have at least a few songs on there that are classics! This is a band that defined and continue to define what Heavy is all about. I still love turning up the Paranoid album while driving down the highway just like I did when I was a teen. Tony made me wanna jam on the guitar and I haven't stopped in 20 years!!
