LIFE OF AGONY Frontman Says ROADRUNNER 'Destroyed' His Solo Career - Sep. 19, 2005
Blistering.com recently conducted an interview with LIFE OF AGONY frontman Keith Caputo. An excerpt from the chat follows:

Blistering.com: Looking back to 1997, "Soul Searching Sun" was just released and "Weeds" was heating up radio charts. Why did you leave LIFE OF AGONY when it looked like they were finally breaking into the mainstream?

Keith: "I wasn't ready to be famous back then. Even though I was bigger than I thought I was, that wasn't my determining goal. I didn't really have any goals. I liked the more indie aspect of it, and I still do now, but it's a different story. I'm going to be 32 years old this year; we're becoming a much better band musically, creatively. Things weren't right in the band's marriage and even if we did blow up, my happiness wouldn't have been genuine. I really didn't give a fuck at that point. It just wasn't right back then. I wear my heart on my sleeve, that's just the type of person that I am, and if I'm not 120% behind something, or if I'm not really feeling something, then I'm not going to put myself in a situation to make other people happy and to make other people money. We had a lot of people around us just taking, taking, taking. We didn't have the proper keys around us, the proper management or the proper label. I fucking hated Roadrunner. I hated how they treated and robbed the band. I hated all of it, the lawyers, the management, the band. I felt like this band was trying to do so much good and I just couldn't handle the negativity that came along with it; the drugs, the lying, the cheating. It wasn't me. So I fucked it off and I stuck to my roots. I believed in what my heart was telling me and I followed my heart, and to me, that's the most important thing to do in life. Creativity has got to be pure, you can't fake it. It's got to be nurtured with the utmost respect as you possibly can. Creativity knows when it's being used in the wrong. The universe is a very sensitive thing. It wasn't right and you just know that. I'm not the type of person to just sit and procrastinate and be in a situation where I wasn't feeling good about it. That was that."

Blistering.com: So then you went and recorded a solo record, "Died Laughing", which is one of the most beautiful records that I've heard in my life. You have so many great songs on that record.

Keith: "What a gorgeous record and Roadrunner fucked that up too."

Blistering.com: That's what my next question was going to be. It wasn't released here, what was that like as an artist?

Keith: "Oh, it destroyed me! It destroyed me. I thought I'd delivered Roadrunner the greatest record musically that they'd ever had in their entire glossary of bands. I gave them a record that they could not handle. It just goes to show you that their staff was not strong enough to really work this. After working with Epic Records and realizing how serious these people take their jobs and their titles, Roadrunner is a fucking soup kitchen compared to Epic. It's fucking ridiculous what they did to me. I moved to Europe for that fucking label! I was still robbed and taken advantage of and… fucking whatever."

Blistering.com: Did that crush you musically?

Keith: "I'm still crushed about it. I have a whole roster of music that when the moment comes again to do a proper solo release with all-star musicians, I'm going to take that opportunity and run with it. Roadrunner just destroyed it, they destroyed that record and that record has so much life; it's so beautiful."

For the record, LIFE OF AGONY's latest album, "Broken Valley" (Epic), has sold 24,000 copies in the United States since its June 2005 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. This number pales in comparison to the total sales of each of their proper studio album released through Roadrunner: 1993's "River Runs Red" (158,000), 1995's "Ugly" (83,000) and 1997's "Soul Searching Sun" (65,000). The band's sole release for SPV Records, the "River Runs Again: Live 2003" live album and DVD, has sold approximately 13,000 copies in the U.S. between its various formats, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Okay, fine, Roadrunner is soulless and evil and screws bands, blah blah blah. But you think you delivered the best record they've ever had? That's hysterical. And LOA's newest is a total joke. Maybe if they tried just a little harder and released it a year earlier, they'd be able to sue velvet revolver for copyright infringement. Suck a dick, Keith.

1) "Soul Searching Sun" was one of the crappiest records of the 90ies.

2) Your Solo Record was mediocre girlie-pop but an ugly, small, skinny, drug-adicted geek who looked like a mixture of Ozzy Osbourne and Joe Cocker on stage. That's why it wasn't successfull.

3) What are you talking about, "becoming a better band"? You've only released one decent record: "River Runs Red". Everything else sucks. No one ruins your career but yourself. You are getting worse and worse. That ruins it.

IT JUST THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE CAN'T APPRECIATE DIVERSITY. LOOK AT ANY OF YOUR IDOLS OR FAVORITE BANDS. THEY WERE INFLUENCED BY BANDS YOU WOULD TALK SHIT ABOUT: BEATLES, DOORS, THE WHO, ROLLING STONES, ALL KINDS OF MUSIC AND DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS. DIVERSITY IS SOMETHING MUSIC TODAY, ANY SCENE, IS LACKING. YOU EVER FELT LIKE SHIT, PUT IN DOWN ON PAPER AND READ IT TO YOURSELF. SEE HOW MUCH SHIT ACTUALLY COMES OUT.

Your numbers are poor for 1990's soundscan units sold and your playing to a few hundred people OPENING for Gigantour. On another note, you sound like your typical cry baby victim blaming other people for your failures.

FUck off

...because let's face it, they're a pretty sucky label. They seem to know very little about metal and they love to rob the fans of their bands by re-releasing shit over and over again.

However, I think it's funny that Keith thinks that Life of Agony are better than ever because their new album is a joke. I refuse to buy it after previewing it and hearing what an uninspired pile of crap it was. I also think his comment about his solo album being the best thing Roadrunner's ever had to be quite ridiculous. C'mon Keith, for what it was it was a good album, but don't be insane. I don't think it was the type of album that many people would have enjoyed because it was too wussy for the metalheads, and too sappy for mainstream music fans.

It's too bad that the fans are so stupid. How can someone expect from them to record River Runs Red - 2? They were fucking 18 years old when they recorded that one. And who needs RRR - 2 anyway? Broken Valley is my favourite album of 2005, and a few years later (when it is too late) people will admit that "it is underrated". Fuck off and die.

Some of you really need to expand your musical outlook.

RRR is a great/classic album. In the end it will be there Master of Puppets album or there Rust in Piece album. I hate it when people try to compare album to album. It doesn't work people. If you go by that logic then just about every band fucking sucks then. Cause most bands have that one or if there lucky two stand out albums and that is it. So with your logic then those bands must suck cause there newest cd or last cd isn't as good as that one great cd. Each album stands on its own.

Lets be honest hear folks. LOA is a quite an impressive band in the music scene. There lyrics are a 100% real and true to who wrote them. Not some bullshit story or fake life. Anyone that knows anything about LOA knows that the band members and more specifically Kieth hadn't had the greatest luck in life. Plus to boot he is a great singer and a great front man. Stop comparing him to fucking Scott Wieland cause if my music history is correct STP started pretty much exactly at the same time as LOA and they were clear across the country and I'm sure never even heard of STP. Joey and Alan can write some killer riffs. Most of there music is fun to play. Its not the same riff over and over and over like 90% of the shit music out there. There song structure is solid on all there albums. None of it is what you would call predictable compared to most music. Then there is Sal's drumming. What a great style he has. In the landscape of music over the last 10 to 15 years I think I've heard more bands abusing the snare drum then I care to think off. Its almost to the point of being annoying. Plus I always like a hard hitting drummer with great beats. He really works the drum set. He doesn't try to fill in with a bunch of bells and whistles(cymbals and double bass when its not called for).

Keith is right on the solo front. the album could have been popular in the U.S. songs like 'selfless' and 'new york' city are the kind of middle of the road, inoffesive acoustic pop shit that goes down well with yanks. it sold 120,000 in europe with little to no promotion. decent effort. the lyrics were SHIT though. beautiful melodies. But the lyrics are some of the dumbest shit i ever heard.

The new LOA CD is their best EVER and I've followed the band since day one and I've seen them live a dozen times. Keiths solo stuff is pure magic and if you guys took your heads out of your asses long enough to open your mind to emotional, melodic rock & roll instead of screaming, yelling death metal bullshit you might understand what these guys do. Keiths solo stuff is right up there with Mark Lanegans solo stuff - fuckin brilliant (ever heard of him?).

Buy the CD and shut the fuck up!!!
