JOHN BUSH: My Time With ANTHRAX Is 'Over'

In a brand-new interview with Revolver magazine — his first since being "replaced" as the voice of ANTHRAX by his predecessor, Joey Belladonna — vocalist John Bush confirmed that the original idea for the band's current reunion trek was to bring both Belladonna and Bush on tour, as ANTHRAX had planned in 2000, but Bush wasn't interested. "At one time, I had been willing to tour with Joey, but now everything is different," Bush says. "It just wasn't in my heart. I figured I had been in this band 12 and a half years, and we felt positive about what we had done, and we all thought our last album, 'We've Come for You All', was the best record we'd made together. So I just wanted to move forward and do another album." Bush's refusal to take part in the tour complicates his relationship with the band. He's still officially a member of ANTHRAX, but he's not on retainer and hasn't been given a date to report back to duty. In addition, ANTHRAX released two albums in September, neither of which involved Bush; a double-disc collection of their studio songs with Belladonna, "Anthrology", and a live album of the reunion tour, "Alive 2". In Bush's mind, that doesn't bode well. "The idea of this reunion tour was to generate a bunch of enthusiasm for the band. But if they get people excited, they're going to want a new record, so they're going to follow up with a new album with Joey," Bush says. "So for me, I look at it as it's over. The last thing I want to do is say, 'Hey, I'll be here if you want me.'" Strangely, ANTHRAX haven't actually committed to a new CD with Belladonna, which is trying for the man who rode with them to their greatest heights in the Eighties. "I can't even begin to understand how this all works," Belladonna says. "People are all worried about Bush not being here. I know for a fact he wasn't booted out. I was. I had to go. I had no choice. But the minute I start thinking about stuff like that, I'm not getting anywhere. Right now, I'm just doing the best job I can, and That's what I'm focused on. But I'm not just here for a temporary run. I'm ready for the ride."

Number one: Belladonna couldn't do Bush-era Anthrax, he'd only sound like a whiny sissy. Along those lines, Bush doesn't sound like a whiny sissy on the original Belladonna tunes, which he should to please you poser fans.
Number two: To say none of the later Anthrax albums sold as well as the earlier Belladonna albums proves you are stupid and gay. The fact is, you are wrong. John Bush had a much meatier, masculine voice than that woman Joey, and added a much needed edge to an otherwise cheesy metal band. The Greater of Two Evils showed how proper vocals could make the old Anthrax songs much more listenable without the testoroneless, sissy vocals of Joey. The albums with Bush weren't great, but he proved to be one of the best vocalists in metal. I hope he moves on to a much better band.

Let's face it. Judas Priest without Rob is not JP. Iron Maiden without Bruce is not IM. Anthrax without Joey is not Thrax. Deep Purple without Ian Gillian is not DP. Each of those bands started out different lead singers and ended up creating more than they know for us fans as well as making serious coin with them and the public (who incidently buys the music) didn't deal very well with any of those bands without the chemistry and soul of the lead singers that brought them to the noteriety they have achieved.
Sure, most musicians get scared that unless they switch things up, that it will get bored and their "art" will suffer. The truth is, when switch things up and try a different direction the chemistry is lost and can be difficult to establish with new guys up front. Sure, John Bush, Ripper Owens, Blaze Bayley and Joe Lynn Turner are competent frontmen in their own right but utlimately loyal fans don't accept them, newer album sales don't do as well, popularity diminishes, venues get smaller and the musicians once again begin to question their abilities. So what happens, the guys that made those bands popular try their own thing, realize that chemistry is a valuable commodity and harder to come by with another set of musicians.
As fans we do appreciate the side project, the time away to experiment but ultimately we like the chemistry, the nostalgia and that feeling of how a band can stick together and make music that we have come to love and embrace. When a new guy steps in, unfortunately for them, the loyal fan will sit there with their arms crossed and compare them. Not only to the old leader singer that they are used to but the emotional level at which the new music connects, the feeling that overcomes us when we get pummelled by a sonic onslaught and how they present our favorite tunes. None of the new guys can match up. For most of us we feel we may have wasted our money on something they just doesn't feel right. Therefore, why give the new guy even a chance. It's kind of like a silent protestb because we want the old guy back in the fold. Once that happens we feel vindicated. We also feel better because the familiarity we love is back and world is right again.
I never got into Anthrax with Bush, Iron Maiden with Blaze, Judas Priest with Tim or Deep Purple with Joe Lynn. Why? Just didn't sound right, didn't do as much for me as the Joey, Bruce, Rob and Ian eras. Sometimes the chemistry is undeniable and music, to me, is much better, has a better feel and has the unmistakable feel to it that just can't be denied.

J Bush is a fucking waste, he might have a meatier voice, but it's the same voice on every song. I tried my hardest to like the music with him. SOWN and Stomp442 have some good music even great, but after the thrill of new music wore off so did the want to hear them. I actually bought their last two discs ( not downloaded and I can't for the life of me get into it. On the other hand ATL, SOU an POT still get regularly played by me and my buds. I like Armored Saint alot more than Bush era thrax.
Last thought, how many more gimmicks will charlie and Scott pull out. We have the matching pentagram shirts,( FUCKING LAME), we have the " I'm a looney leftist rants", we have re recorded music that in my opinion sucks, comic book writers making their covers which is cool , but then they rant about it. Hey monkey boys put on your shorts, wear t-shirts and sing about steven king books get Andy Sneap and above all else keep your poli views to your selves.

Who the hell band does a ping pong act with singers. Van Halen almost did it with Dave then they kinda of did it with Sammy. They only did a few songs with each. Anthrax is mediocre at best. They are better off with John than Joey.

To the idiot who questions whether Belladonna albums sold better than Bush albums....check the facts. During the period of 86-91 Anthrax were a multi million selling band, they had top 20 chart hit albums and singles the world over and played massive concert halls. Within 3 years of replacing Belladonna their albums were struggling to chart at all and they were a forgotten band playing small club tours.
The other post about how changing vocalists in an established band was spot on. Anthrax don`t sound like Anthrax with Bush. They sound like a completely different band and the majority of fans lost interest. Personally I quite like some of the Bush era Anthrax stuff but it pales compared to the kick ass thrash they were doing before. I`m keeping my finger`s crossed for a new classic era Anthrax album and I guarantee it`ll be the biggest album they`ve done for over a decade.

It really wasn't Anthrax with Bush.
"We've Come For You All" is a kick ass CD, no matter what, but is really wasn't Anthrax...in much the same way S.O.D. kicked ass, but wasn't Anthrax.
Anthrax put fun into speed metal... they did what other speed/thrash bands were afraid to do, which was, have fun and not look evil all the time.
And it kicked ass...
This is the way it should be....Belladonna with Anthrax, and Bush with Armored Saint, 'cuz the last few Armored Saint CD's kicked ass, too.
'Nuff said.

I always was an Anthrax fan wth Joey but when they got Bush they brought everything to a whole new level. One of the few old school bands that didn't stick of sellout...until now. Fucking wankers.....Maybe John will do more of Armored Saint. But for me.....Anthrax is DEAD!!!

This has been a f**ked-up situation since the get-go. It's only led to confusing their fans even more than before. I have no interest in this new CD/DVD. "We've Come For You All" was a great record (bad title aside), and they we're poised to do better with the next one. Anthrax has totally blown it in my eyes.
I wanna see Bush in the band, not Belladonna - period!! It's probably too late, though.

I'm sort of torn about this issue. On one hand I really dig John as a metal singer. I think the guy has a kick ass voice and I loved Reign of Fire from Armored Saint and I hope he gets back with them. At the same time I love Joey era Anthrax and it's much heavier than the newer stuff. Having said that..I just wish there would have been a better way for Scott and co. to handle this..

But feel bad for Bush. I love his voice, too, and Anthrax made GREAT records with him, but it was never going to be AtL or PoT (IMHO). While I personally would look forward to a Belladonna record more than a Bush (although either is fine) it must suck for John.

Next season they can do thier version of ROCKSTAR INXS. I liked both singers, but never would I have done this to John. He is the better vocalist, and the Anthrax with him was a different band. The whole sound changed. Not for better or worse. Just good heavy metal I think.

Saint was ALWAYS better than shithrax. John just took the gig because the paycheck was better at the time and Saint just couldn't keep it together internally. There WILL be a new Armored Saint album and like the last one it'll be better than ANY Shithrax albums !

Old fans are familiar with Joey but I'm 24, by the time I was old enough to know Anthrax Joey was gone and John is the singer I knew. The older fans might feel better about Joey being there but for me not having John there is not cool. I love Anthrax to death but without John it's not the same for me and considering how well the band pulled it together with WCFYA and the rerecordings as well as hooking up with Rob Caggiono (who's out now, that sucks) I was really excited to hear what was next.

At the end of the day, who's in Anthrax now and who's not? That says more than any of your pissing, moaning and rationalizing.
Omar B is the one person who has a little perspective on things and I can respect his viewpoint. Sorry you are disappointed in how things are turning out. I hope you can dig the "new" 'Thrax anyway.
As for me, I am a BellaDonna fan and am THRILLED at how 'Thrax is going. Can't wait to hear a new album from the classic lineup.
I even feel bad for John Bush, but he should have seen this written on the wall anyway. He is a great vocalist/frontman and I have no doubt he'll land on his feet.

regardless of who you like better. Pretty pathetic.....I remember Scott saying in interviews back in the 80's when asked what made his band different, stuff like 'we have a singer that can actually sing', etc. Then they booted Joey and it suddenly became 'Joey didn't have any power', blah blah. Now they basically force out a (seemingly) good guy who is a class act and invests himself in the band for over a decade. Hope you enjoy your cash-in boys(I doubt it)......

I'm old enough but I prefer John anyway. He's the better singer and the better performer. The best Anthrax songs were originally made with Joey but they sound (even) better with John sinnging them.

I don't care what the circumstances were when Joey left the band. I've waited years for either a collaboration, or a comeback with Joey. I picked up Alive 2 DVD. Fuckin' kicks ass. Just got tix for Thrax and Priest in Diego. I CAN'T WAIT!!
I like Bush, but as previously stated, he sounds the same on every song. And he does NOT have the range that Joey has. Obviously 2 different singers with different styles. I happen to prefer Joey style!!!
Bring on the new shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Armored Saint broke up coz they couldn't cope after their guitarist died. It's not like John just jumped ship to Anthrax, the Saint was collapsing anyway.
It's a real shame the way John is being treated. Scott and Charlie are just living in the past. The arrangement with Spitz won't last either, he hates Scott and vice versa. Plus, John was in Anthrax longer than Joey anyway. It wasn't fair on John to force him compete with his predecessor in the 1st place.
When Bush joined Anthrax, the band's sound and image matured a lot. Beforehand, they always had that element of cheesiness...just look at the cover and the pictures in State of Euphoria!
John is one of my favourite vocalists full stop. I hope the reunion is temporary.

I like both singers and I own every Anthrax album except for the last one "We've Come For You All'. With Joey in the band Anthrax was unique and sounded different then the other bands out there. Although I liked Bush. They didn't sound different anymore. Joey's voice made them unique.
I did like "Sound Of White Noise", "Stomp 442" and "Volume 8". I thought with each album with Bush they were getting further and further away from being a classic/thrash metal band. Especially with he pentagrams and stuff. That was bad..... Then Frank Bello left. I knew something bad was going on.
I'm glad that Joey is back. I always want to like Anthrax but if Bush was still in the band. I was done with them. Now with Joey in the band. I hope they can write some killer riffs and put together a great record. They sounded great tonight with Priest! I'm glad Anthrax is back. I have something to get my excited about this band again!

I think the only thing that can satisfy Scott is the money. I've seen both singer in the front, but John was much better so far. He's a fukin maniac. Joey looks like a second rata David Coverdale. I grew up on Spreading and Among at all, but to me SOWN is THE ANTHRAX ALBUM. All of it was an immortal piece of the music history. Volume 8 wasn't so good, but WCFYA was great again as Stomp. I think the newer (less thrah/speed metal) musical style of Anthrax was more of Scott's and Benante's idea, than John's. Look the credits in the cover. Charlie wrote almost all of the songs on the newer records...To me the anthrax means nothing. I think there will be a trouble in the band within 1 year.

listened to the pre bush anthrax for the first time, i can`t believe how good some of the music was, but i still love stomp 442 thier heavest album in my opinion, but i think the time is right for a new album with joey
