KISS To Continue Touring Without Any Original Members?
- Sep. 26, 2005
|
|
|
Launch Radio Networks reports: Is an all-new KISS on the horizon, one that doesn't have any original members? It's possible, according to the band's manager. According to the New York Times, KISS manager Doc McGhee "has been toying with the idea of recruiting an entire band to...don the band's famous makeup." McGhee said, "KISS is more like Doritos or Pepsi, as far as a brand name is concerned. They're more characters than the individual person. I think (new members) have a legitimate chance to carry the franchise."
KISS singer-bassist Gene Simmons doesn't necessarily disagree with that idea. He told Launch that the concept of original members isn't widely held by fans, and it isn't really accurate anyway. "There's no question that there's a core of fans — five-10 percent, my sense is — who believe in original members," he said. "And yet, when you look at original members, THE BEATLES are not original members — Ringo is not an original member; the STONES — barely. You know, they've had so many members come and go, but it's the STONES; and AC/DC's aren't original members; and VAN HALEN; and JOURNEY...you go down the list of every — almost every band you can think of."

I think it is a great idea to put different people to don the makeup. At least then they will have more talent than Gene/Paul/Peter. Or that is what they should be striving for.

If you don't have an original members? Doesn't it become a tribute band at some point? But what happens when those guys want to create new music? Does that music become music of that band? Or is that music for when they do something different? I don't think there's a band out there that hasn't had a lineup change for some reason or another. Unless the band is brand new. Also, at what point do you consider members original members?
Another forever debatable topic.

PS Kiss Gave me my Hard Rock Wings I came out of my mama’s pussy screaming (not screaming to go back in, but rockin out, hitting the high notes like Eric Dover). I saw Gene Simmons spit up blood when I was 6 or 7, and it was like a crack head hitting a pipe! When I was 7 Kiss was bigger than God. Kiss was everything. I had all their LP’s (that’s an album for all you young viewers, you know they are black and round and you gotta put a needle in the groove, ah never mind.)

Whoever said that about the tribute bands is dead on. If this is their idea, they should just start putting out Black Diamond or Strutter or one of those KISS tribute bands as "KISS".
And, then, like I said - enjoy the hilarity!
KISS is NOT a band. It is a commerical for Honda and Pepsi.

I love how Gene mentiones bands that replaced members that died in his analogy. I agree that many bands have made line-up changes across their careers but they at least continue to make new music and not become the novelty act Kiss has become. Didn't Gene also state that there will probably never be a new Kiss record because it will never live up to the expecation of the previous ones to the fans? What a fuckin' tool.

As a huge KISS fan, I just wish the band would slink away into obscurity and let me (and the 95% other real fans, Gene - you math-challenged dick!) remember them for what they were in the good ol' days in the 70's. Granted, the first farewell tour was pretty freaking incredible, seeing them all again in full makeup, but sheesh - can we be done already? And now, their manager just wants to keep the machine churning! And I can believe in the support from Gene and Paul - their egos are larger than God and in some sick way they probably see this as a means to immortalize them and their music far beyond what they did as a band.
And yes, it would be just another tribute band. -g-

Just when you think this band can't sink any lower or become more of a joke, they go right ahead and do just that. And I love Gene's comment that the notion of original members isn't widely held by the fans... that's why the reunion tour w/ Ace & Peter did massive business and saved these guys from bankruptcy- that was a lot of fans who don't care about original members selling out their shows. I swear, Gene would slit an old ladies throat and claim it's what the fans wanted (as long as it made him a few bucks).

You guys are just a tad bit late with this "news", and obviously nobody in here has followed Kiss very closely in the last decade.
Paul Stanley, back in 1996 during the reunion, said that he and Gene could both very much see Kiss touring and functioning with no original members. This was in the Goldmine interview they did in '96. So this isn't new at all.
Take out the original members, and you have a band who just may go back to doing albums and touring on a regular basis.

Dreaming Neon black-era guitarist Tim Calvert (ex-Forbidden) was considered to be their final 5th member - before he decided to quit the band due to conflicting schedules with his family, so to say. And I won't consider Nevermore the "original" band with a fifth member nowadays.
As for Slayer; after Lombardo, Scaglione, Lombardo, Bostaph, Dette, Bostaph, Lombardo I wouldn't count them either.
Rammstein may come to mind, but their first album was released only 10 years ago, so they are fairly new and no "classic" rock band in a long shot.
As for Kiss: I never cared for this boring band - more image than substance. Give me Thin Lizzy or Queen any day of the week.

U2 originally started as a 5-piece with Edge's brother Dik also on guitars. After a few months he left, however, and the band has been the same ever since- dating back to about a year before their first album "Boy" was released.
Boingo has been broken up almost 10 years, so I guess technically they wouldn't have the original lineup. Also, they started out as "Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo" who were a performing troupe of some 30-odd people. Later, when they shorted down and were strictly a rock outfit, the band included bassist Richard Hatch who left sometime in the mid 80s. Whatever the case, those guys did rock.
Kiss, on the other hand, sucks large donkey cock!
How anyone could still take them seriously is beyond me!!

You're probably right about it being a tribute band. To me it is after the first album , because before then you go through a lot of changes. This whole plan wouldn't work because ummm , could they write new material? Lol cuzz would gene just want them to play the hits and stuff ? If they did this they'd probably get the official KISS tribute band. Their bassist apeared with gene simmons on the cover of some magazine. Personally I think this idea is fucked up and retarded.

Leave it to Gene to put such a spin on this... he forgets that KISS were doing just above average in the 80s and 90s, but when the opportunity arose to put the original band back together, and money started rolling in...
Gene says stuff like this just to piss people off. That, or he's so insulated that he doesn't have his finger on the pulse of the public. It's the other way around, Gene: 5-10% of the hardcore fans (with blinders on) are accepting the nonsense of putting 2 other musicians out there with costumes and make-up! Funny that they made this move, hooked up with Aerosmith two summers ago to gain interest in ticket sales. Superfans, don't try to defend it: they were already doing less business on the farewell tour. And comparing kurrent KISS with the Stones or the Beatles... please!
I don't care how much better TECHNICALLY Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer might be than Ace or Peter. KISS should have called it quits after the "farewell" tour... but as usual, the spin was "well, farewell to those members"... Right.
I would have respected them a helluva lot more if they had just reunited, played 2-3 years, not bothered with a studio album, sold limited yet classy merchandise (NOT the kondoms, kaskets, etc)... just taken the money and run... and then retired.
I'm sure I'm talking the wall here... no one from the KISS organization would bother reading this forum (after all, we're just a bunch of "internuts" in Gene's words... gosh, it was so much better in the 70s when they could keep secrets, such as Alive II barely being live, or Peter barely showing up on Dynasty... damn information super highway, anyway!) but that's my 2 cents on the subject.
Thanks for the great show with the ORIGINAL line-up 5 years ago... but no mo' money from this long-time fan, least of all to see a "franchise". Isn't that called a "tribute" band???

I could respect an all-new KI$$ more than I respect the current half-"real" half-scab KI$$.
Maybe they'll have a reality show called "Rock Stars: KI$$" and have a playoff each for the new Bat-Lizard, StarBoy, Catman and SpaceCase.
i'd watch it- it would be hilarious!

They should have a revolving lineup with famous people playing anonymously every tour. Then at the end, all the guys would come on stage sans makeup and surprise everyone.
Yeah, that's the ticket!

Now what does everybody consider original members?? From the time a band gets together in a garage or from the time their first album is released?? I consider the original band the day there first disc is released. U2 is the only one I can think of. Aerosmith and Slayer had different people at a time but are now back to original members. The Beatles would be also. Since they did not release anything with Pete Best.

Do any of these clowns think anyone would actually pay to see this? Sorry - there aren't enough kissrules-type jerks in the world to make this profitable. And there are tons of tribute bands that have the act down pat - there's a reason none of them are doing arena tours. Doc McGee needs to get over the fact that he's fat. Jeez - wasn't having their last tour called The Flop Of 2004 by the music industry enough for these aging queens? A new low in a career full of 'em.

Deep Purple Mark II had only original members. Not Deep Purple, but Deep Purple Mark II did.
This is joking, but there's a serious point: core members are what counts, not that the tambourine playing executive producer didn't play on all later albums.

With all the original members since their first major-label release.....Who never had anyone get kicked out, die, quit and rejoin, or get replaced in any other manner.....is.....................KING'S X. And I can't think of any other band that fits that category. I am curious if anyone out there has another band that fits into that category. On topic: KISS has stopped being a band and has started being a commercial mass produced whorish by-product a LONG LONG time ago. If Gene N' Paul could clone their sperm and inject it into unborn fetuses and somehow transfer their anceint, wrinkled personalities into newborns, they would. That band has become a fucking travesty. And these words are spoken from a former die-hard KISS fan. But there will always be ignorant yokels that think Ace and Peter are still onstage.....

Actually led zepellin does not have it's original members. the band name were borrowed by J. Page from Keith Moon's project , Jeff Beck were high on the bill for the 6 strings. but Keith never left The Who .

I swear if this involves KISS without Gene, Paul, and Peter then by god it should never happen. thats all there is to it. I saw them a few years ago in Oklahoma City and it was great to see Paul, Gene, and Peter back together. I truthfully dont know the new guys name and for that i am ashamed to even call myself a KISS fan. but i can name everyone else who has run through that band, and the only two to always be there are Gene and Paul. If 4 new guys come in and try to be KISS then it will never work. KISS a "label" what is this garbage. KISS is a legacy made by two guys who had the balls to continue on. To fight the fight and make KISS what they are. The day KISS walks on stage without Gene, Paul, and Peter from the last time they played together. Not only will i never even think about going, ill protest dangit! lol

When you reach into a bag of Doritos you get Doritos - not some corn chip that's dolled up to look like a Dorito but isn't.
tokyorockadom - Just who do you think Led Leppelin's original members are?

I hope it happens, I want to laugh. Gene is a legend, also a hasbeen and has also lost his mind.
Doc is just an idiot. Replace everyone in Motley Crue also and they can tour with 100% fake KISS.
