ANTHRAX's 'Classic' Lineup Reunion Generates Little Retail Heat
- Sep. 28, 2005
|
|
|
The reunion of the "classic" ANTHRAX lineup of singer Joey Belladonna, guitarists Scott Ian and Dan Spitz, bassist Frank Bello and drummer Charlie Benante appears to be generating little heat in terms of retail sales. The band's most comprehensive "best of" collection ever issued, its first two-CD retrospective, "Anthrology: No Hit Wonders (1985-1991)", has shifted just over 2,700 copies in its first week of release, while the group's first video compilation, the DVD "Anthrology: No Hit Wonders (1985-1991) The Videos" (both on Island/UMe), has shifted less than 950 units in its initial week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Similarly, the band's live CD and DVD packages, "Alive 2 (2005)" (on Sanctuary Records), which document the group's summer 2005 reunion tour, have sold less than 1,100 and 1,700 copies, respectively.
The "Alive 2 (2005)" DVD captures the actual meeting in which the five members came together for the first time in over 10 years. Along with band rehearsals and behind-the-scenes footage, the DVD also spotlights 13 performances on the group’s triumphant reunion tour. The "Alive 2 (2005)" CD reprises the audio for 11 of those songs ("Madhouse" and "I'm the Man" are only on the DVD): "Among the Living", "Caught In A Mosh", "I Am The Law", "A.I.R.", "N.F.L.", "Deathrider", "Medusa", "In My World", "Indians", "Time" and "Be All, End All" — and adds "Antisocial". In a unique twist, the booklets from the DVD and CD releases form an exclusive poster.
As for the original recordings, "Anthrology: No Hit Wonders (1985-1991)" marks the first time that ANTHRAX's recordings are being released with newly remastered versions of their classic hits. It begins with the follow-up to ANTHRAX's 1984 "Fistful of Metal" debut, "Spreading the Disease", which appeared in 1985 and was re-released in 1986 when indie Megaforce pacted with Island. "Anthrology" includes "Madhouse", "A.I.R.", "Armed and Dangerous", "Lone Justice", "The Enemy", "Medusa" and "Gung-Ho", tracks that defined the band's take-no-prisoners speed metal style.
The DVD "Anthrology: No Hit Wonders (1985-1991) The Videos" spotlights live performances of "Armed and Dangerous", "Among the Living", "Caught In A Mosh" and "Metal Thrashing Mad". Also seen are videos for "Madhouse", "Indians", "I Am the Law", "Belly of the Beast", "Got the Time", "In My World", "I'm The Man" (U.S. version), "Who Cares Wins" and "Bring Tha Noize (with Public Enemy)".

...it's just rehashed songs that any Anthrax fan already has. I think these guys need to stop being such cash-crazy morons and either get into a studio to record a new album or just break up already. We don't need anymore useless live or best-of releases from Anthrax. These guys are milking their older songs so bad these days it's out of control.
And I for one am pissed that John Bush is out of the band. He was a much better vocalist than that Belladonna wuss.

Go into any used CD store with your Anthrax CD's and see how much they'll give you for them. You're lucky to get a toatl of a $1 for the lot. Just proves that these idiots run their mouth and talk all this negative crap, and the people are tired of it all. Bitching = No sales!
And before the Anthrax fans get on here and bash anybody...have you yourself purchased any of this crap yet? If not...shut up!

The albums with Bush weren't selling to well, either. I recall reading that "Greater of Two Evils" tanked as well. So everyone bitching "Oh Bush is better" or "No, Belladonna is better" ought to realize that neither singer is helping the band sell records. Anthrax's time is past.

these guys just need to give it up already...they have a couple of key albums under their belt (like 1 or 2, in my opinion), and they're never gonna get any farther than that, no matter the lineup. Sure, they have some good tunes, but most of the other songs that surround those good songs are mostly just crap filler (to my ears). Plus, Scott Ian just annoys the everliving piss outta me.

don't make them a crappy band. All these screamer underground euro-trash bands you guys are all into sell like 500 units and you guys bitch up a storm - Anthrax does it and you laugh.
I don't care who sings... Anthrax is a great band who has been consistent for 20+ years. The new live album is fucking great, and the DVD of it is killer too - the remastered songs are cool, if only because they sound better than the originals.
You guys are such hypocrites - any time there was a Bush-era posting on here, all you read was "Bring back Joey!", then when they do just that, you all say "Bring back Bush!"
You guys are all fucking idiots, and I am thankful I never have to meet you in person - I fear the drop in my IQ that that would induce.

Look at the post above the Anthrax news...God Forbid has shifted 8,300 copies of their new album on the first week. all of these new anthrax products COMBINED have sold 1,850 less than that new album. I don't like God Forbid, but this just kind of gives an indication of where Anthrax are in the general mindset.

Then no support from me. Very few really wanted Belladonna back in the band. The bad thing for the band is that once the honeymoon is over John Bush is not going to come back to them.
Joey's a great guy (yes, I've met him) but Bush is a better fit for Anthrax. Bush's voice is much stronger, the albums with him are better, and he has a much better stage presence.

never was the guy, who sang. "Stomp 442" and "The Treat is real" were just crappy albums. "We've Come For You All" was ok, but nothing groundbreaking. It wouled be more necessary for them to write a great album again. Who cares about, who's singing, if the music kicks ass? I would have apreciated a THRASH-Album by them with John Bush singing. I don't like the idea behind this reunion, because it's obviously just about making money and jumping on the "old-school-reunion"-bandwagon. But I will only judge them by their next studio-album. If this album would be great, I wouldn't mind if it's Joey Belladonna, John Bush or George Bush sr. or jr. singing.

3. Release all the albums remastered, not just a few songs.
4. Write some new songs with Joey and let us see if we like it better than John.

I went out and aboot looking for the albums in the albany, ny area and found 2 copies of the live dvd out of the 7 media outlets (best buy, circuit city, etc...) i went to. The live album wasn't even stocked in most places. The only thing that was readily availlable was the greatest hits collection, but most people aren't gonna buy that cuz they've put out at least 5 variations of that anyways.

i mean this band has been coasting for a LOOOOOOONG tim- just doing tour after tour playing the same old songs over and over.
if they actually made an effort to record an album more than once every 5 years then maybe people would get interested in them again.

when i was 15 in 1987, anthrax were one of my favourite bands. i stopped following them in about 1990 when the gimmicks began to wear thin. for what it's worth SOD was a novelty, "I 'm the Man" and "Bring the Noise" too for that matter. yeah, "AOL" and "Spreading..." are great thrash records but that's about it. i haven't spent money on the band since i paid for tix to see them play with PE and primus at the ritz in nyc in 90/91. anthrax have been milking it for a long time. of course that's no secret. i am not surpised at all too see that the sales numbers are so low. why they chose to release all this stuff at one time was not such a smart idea... guess they didn't care about canibalising sales.
i liked the band before the TNMT guitars and george jetson shorts.

Actually the Eagles Greatest Hits and Billy Joel's Greatest hits are 2 of the top 5 sellers OF ALL TIME along with Thriller, Back In Black and Dark Side of the Moon.
Don't worry, Charlie will be here in a day or 2 to blame downloading. But like someone else said, most of us ahd these songs and records before there even was an internet. Sorry Charlie. How many greatest hits records has Metallica put out?
And one more thing - the records sales with Bush were nothing either. It's a fact that they've sold more records and did bigger tours to more people when Belladonna was in the band. That's FACT.

Four new products - of rehashed stuff. Didn't they release a live CD and DVD last year, as well as newly recorded versions of Belladonna era songs? Instead of releasing 4 new products, why not just release a box set, or at least include the DVD's within the CD cases. None of the Dual Disc shit, I mean like a bonus, like what Pantera and Rob Zombie did with their greatest hits packages.

I just bought the "Alive 2" DVD yesterday and enjoyed it very much. The sound quality is much better than "Music of Mass Destruction". I've been a fan of the band since "Armed & Dangerous" back in 85 and have seen both the Belladonna and Bush lineups various times over the years. I've enjoyed some of their albums but I don't know how to read this reunion. First, we get a live album with John...ok, fine. Then we get "Greater of Two Evils" which didn't make alot of sense to me. The title of the album is an obvious diss at Neil Turbin and Joey and then they turn around and bring Joey and Dan back into the band. Now we get these four "new" releases? The "real" fans have owned all this stuff for many years and I'm not sure how many "new" fans they can attract via these re-releases. The "Alive 2" DVD does answer so of the questions regarding things that have gone on in the band and why changes have been made over the years. Either way, I like both Joey and John as vocalists so I'm curious to see where this rollercoaster goes next.

With Belladonna Anthrax destryoed and sold alot of records, with John it went all down hill. Same goes for when Rob Halford left Judas Priest, Bruce Dickinson leaving Iron Maiden, Ozzy leaving Black Sabbath and the one we all know about, Diamond Dave leaving Van Halen. I'm not sure about AC/DC but I'm guessing Brian being brought in was accepted by all. It really showed why bands suck after Dave left. Van Hagar absolutley sucks major ass and it shows in record sales. That era of VH will never have albums like I and 1984 because those albums rule and they've sold over 10 million copies each. Van Halen's website even tells how many copies they showed for each album and the last time i checked, Dave's era over 34 million albums and Sammy's era which included #1 albums, songs and Grammy's only sold 18 million. Honestly Dave's era is 10x better plus I believe more people would rather see a tour with Dave then Sammy anyday, I would.

This band has been spinning its wheels for the past few years, and it has nothing to do with the singers. They put out "We've Come For You All" to good reviews and ok sales. Since then its nothing but rehashes. You have:
A live album/DVD
A CD of old songs re-recorded with a different line up
A(nother) Greatest Hits
A DVD of old videos
A(nother) live CD/DVD
How about something new guys?

If you own all of the original albums, why would you go and plunk down hard earned cash for a collection of songs on a CD that you already have on CD? No great mystery there. Honestly, I could afford it, I don't give a shit about $15 or whatever, but it is pointless. I'd rather leave a bigger tip at Peppino's. Attention Anthrax: If you want some of my dough, go in the studio and give me a good record with the original lineup. Stir my blood. Then you will reap success, instead of relying on some bullshit cash grabbing scheme.

I really dig the name "No hit Wonders", it cracked me up. And as for the DVD, I want to buy it but haven't gotten to the store yet to do so.

I love how, when a band you hate pulls in good sales numbers (like Linkin Park), it's merely a gauge of popularity, not talent. But when a band you hate (Anthrax with Belladonna) puts up bad #s, suddenly it's now an accurate take on how good/sucky they are.
Anyway, I like the box set idea that someone mentioned - that would have made a lot more sense. I'm heading out to buy some of this stuff tonight (probably the live and DVD stuff, but not the Best Of, since I have everything on CD already).
I think another factor in the lower #s is that Belladonna-era fans are now all in their 30s and most have families and kids and don't pay much attention to music anymore. They're not out buying new releases and they're not going to concerts. That my experience in talking to people that used to listen to Anthrax back in the late 80s.
I, for one, have been waiting 14 years for one of my favorite bands to get back together in the lineup that I love. The Bush stuff is OK, but just not the same for me. Anthrax with Joey is the band I grew up on. Since they're not coming to my area on the Priest tour, 3 of us are making the 6 hour drive to Milwaukee for the show this Saturday. Drokk it!

You guys can rag on Anthrax all you want. Sure, they want to make money.....everyone in a band does and if they say they don't, they are lying. If it was ONLY for the money, they would have jumped at Sharon's offer to put them on Ozzfest instead of going out on their own this past summer. I've been a fan of the Belladonna AND the Bush years. At first I was wary of them doing a reunion, but I caught the first date in Detroit after only 3 days of rehearsals and they sounded better than they have in a LONG time live. The energy and chemistry was there and Belladonna sang better than he did when he left the band. Very few 80's bands have come back and sounded as good as they did. They kicked so much as at that show. Fuck all the haters......I look forward to the next Armored Saint AND the next Anthrax CD.

FUCK YOU ALL!!!!!! 99% of the "Metal" floating around these days is PISS!!!With the exception of a FEW other bands,Anthrax blows them away!!!Most of you little fuckers that don't appreciate Anthrax are probably in your early 20s or somthing, and don't know shit about shit anyway.....ESPECIALLY Metal! Todays metal owes MORE than a lot to the mighty Anthrax...We've Come For You All is an incredible release...and as much as I love John Bushs' voice...I HAVE Alive 2 and Joey Belladonna is DEAD ON!
If you don't like it....Fuck You,don't listen.Go cue up some of the never ending Gothenburg bullshit that keeps regurgitating itself and have a lovely time.

As much as I love Anthrax's music, they have little credibility with me, and it looks like no credibility with most other folks. As good as their songwriting is, the fact is that Scott and Charlie are bandwagon jumpers of the first order. Back in the early 90's they shitcanned Joey in an effort to be more "alternative". Now that metal reunions are an established moneymaker (Maiden, Priest et al), they now shitcan John Bush, whom after twelve years is more accepted than even Joey, in an effort to be "metal" (after years of denying being a metal band). The loyal anthrax fans (what's left of us) ain't buying it. And if the loyal fans ain't buying it, no else will either.

obvious why this shit doesn't sell. This is about the 1 millionth compilation of Belladonna anthrax stuff since he departed and the thrax left island records. The latest had John Bush singing the old classics and came out only a few months ago. All the old Anthrax fans have already got this stuff anyway and any new fans are likely to either download the old stuff or buy one of the other cheaper compilations that have all the same songs on but only cost half as much !!! The stuff being remastered is not really an attraction. We are talking about well produced albums from the 80's and 90's here that were already available on CD, not a mono recording from the 60 s. They don't need remastering !!! What Anthrax fans want is a new album from the classic line up. If they wanted to relase a stop gap album they should have recorded a live album with Joey singing the best of the bush era tracks. This would at least have been something different. The sooner they get off the road and into the studio the better. Then we Anthrax fans will get what we really want !
