Former LED ZEPPELIN Bassist Pens Tribute To JOHN BONHAM
- Oct. 1, 2005
|
|
Former LED ZEPPELIN bassist John Paul Jones has penned the following tribute to late ZEPPELIN drummer John Bonham to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the the drum legend's death: "So it's been 25 years. It still seems only yesterday that I was standing on stage next to him locking into another earth-moving groove. He always looked for a different angle, always came up with the unexpected. You had to pay attention when playing with him, but the ride was exhilarating and for me, as a musician, life-changing. "It was wonderful to see him all over again with the release of the DVD, watching the whole cinema at the premier, stand and applaud at the end of 'Moby Dick', just as if it were a live show, was heart-warming and humbling. "He is still with us." In other news, The Toronto Sun recently published a two-page tribute to Bonham, reprinting an interview from April 1970. Bonham = best rock drummer there ever will be. None of today's double-bass hounds would ever be able to emulate what he did, and he did it all with one bass drum even. R.I.P. Bonzo
I actually forgot about it being the 25th anniversary and all that. I'm gonna blast some Zep today.

ruled the world (1970-1975) all four band members were the best in the world at what they did. Bonham best drummer, Jones was best bassist, Plant best vocalist, and certainly Page best guitarist! (there is no way he could be overrated!) There have been great guitarists since but in his day he was the best.

I still remember the day when I heard the news. My friends and I were making plans to go stand in line for tickets. We were all so jazzed and then immediately bummed.
We still have still have the genius and we still have the music to listen to forever. He may be gone but certainly not forgotten.

Keith Moon was a horrific drummer to many top recording drummers today. Fucking sloppy and over show-boated. Neil Pert rocks. John Bonham (way different style) single handedly has THE best groove of ANY drummer on earth. I saw Zep the night John and their manager kicked the shit outta a security guard in Oakland, CA. When the security guard wouldn't let Bonzo's son backstage, they both dragged him into a back office and kicked him unconscious. John Bonham knew how to party! Sincerely, ask any producer whom they would sample a kick drum tone to... 9 outta 10 say Bonzo.

First of all, Keith Moon was good. One of the first to use a double bass. Peart is one of the few purists in percussion. Amazing player. Who was one of his biggest influences? John Henry Bonham. No player has ever played like Bonham, before or after. For anyone who hasn't seen the DVD, rent it. What an incredibly hard hitter. Perhaps that's why he is/was the most sampled live (as opposed to pure keyboard/midi creadted) drummers ever. John Paul Jones was/is one of the most underrated bass players ever. Jimmy could get a little sloppy but he is one of the most influential guitar players ever. I think someone mentioned the dates 1970-1975. I agree. He was the man. Didn't he do heroin for about 3 of those 5 years? In my humble opinion I believe the one of the foundations for metal/thrash was Achilles Last Stand. Don't get me wrong, Sabbath was METAL. But Achilles was one of the first times I heard a fast gallop (guitar playing). Robert Plant. Some like him, some don't. My opinion is that he was one of the most soulful blues/rock singers at that time. He had some power!
RIP Bohnham

It was his SOUND. He had a UNIQUE sound to his drums, and that is what made him great.

Why are you posting this message on every new story that appears on here? Are you really just waiting for the next new story to get posted, so that you can sit there and go "Ah hah! Got them again! This'll show them..." Well, just to cover a few obvious people who MIGHT post that shit (please bare with me, I'm having a rant):
Tommy Lee: you're still a dick and no one likes you. Dave Mustaine: go home and fuck your new horse.
Zakk Wylde: Zakk, you're drunk, dude. Go get some sleep... You won't remember this in the morning anyway.
Lars Ulrich: you probably have your personal assistant paid to sit there and post this shit. Personal Asistant, tell Lars he's a fuckin sally.
Miscellaneous Nu Metal Band member: Sorry your label dropped you for being shit. Better luck with the new job sweeping up. Don't hold us responsible though, you really were shit.
Default Blabbermouth user: Someone probably slagged you about the size of your penis or something. Dude, don't worry, everyone gets the piss kicked out of them every once in a while. It's like life though, some days you do the pissin' and some days you do the kickin'. Don't take it to heart. We're one big happy, disfunctional family on blabbermouth.
Scott Weiland: Get some more orange juice into you and you'll be right as rain.
Ah....much better...

when you watch some of Bonham's playing, it looks like it's on fast forward, but it's not. Led Zeppelin is undoubtedly the most influemcial band of all time and also my fav band. They were all masters of their instruments and fantastic songwriters. They chemistry of those 4 were just insane.

to "When the Levy Breaks", tell me that kick drum was not sampled by every producer in the world. I can tell you, it has been. Keith Moon was way overrated and really sloppy (even when he wasn't sloshed). I've asked so many top studio drummers and 99% agree. Bonham was such an amazing drummer with such a great groove.

Okay????? Why don't you entertain us with your wisdom over music. Give us something intelligent. Perhaps you like Portnoy better. Why don't you articulate that other than writing stupid shit like,
"Quit jacking off on your keyboard and GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!"
Uh, ..........your here as well . . . ?
Brother Maynard. I was too young to have seen them but I would have possibly traded the 2 or 3 years of life to have seen them. Probably not, but sounds good....LOL
Anyway, I do see bunch of Zeppelin haters for some reason. I can't think of many bands that are as influential in rock music. Beatles and Sabbath were definitly arguably more influential. There's been trends but over all I would say the those three bands have trickled down to what we have now.
