It's Official: MEGADETH Will Continue
- Oct. 9, 2005
|
|
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine announced at the end of the band's headlining performance in Buenos Aires, Argentina Sunday night (October 9) that the group will continue to record and tour under the name MEGADETH. "I told you earlier tonight that I was gonna let all of you know first before the rest of the world what our decision was — whether or not we were gonna continue with MEGADETH or not," Mustaine said before launching into a special rendition of the band's track "Coming Home", with the song's lyrics changed from the original "I'm coming home to Arizona" to "I'm coming home to Argentina." He then followed it up by saying, "The answer is yes." Download an audio recording of the announcement (including the song "Coming Home") at this location. Mustaine had previously told Launch Radio Networks he originally planned MEGADETH's 2004 album, "The System Has Failed", as a solo outing, but used the band name for contractual reasons. After releasing the album under the MEGADETH name, he contemplated ending the group in favor of a solo career, but started having second thoughts after spending most of the last year touring with the band's current lineup, which includes bassist James MacDonough (ex- ICED EARTH), drummer Shawn Drover ( EIDOLON) and guitarist Glen Drover ( EIDOLON). "I still was convinced that this was gonna be the last MEGADETH record," he said. "But, you know, after going out and touring and having these new, wonderful people I'm playing with and this whole new administration that I'm part of, it's just given me a huge, very uncomfortable question mark. Do I go out on top — because MEGADETH certainly is at the top of its form right now — or do I throw the dice again?" MEGADETH are in the middle of a South American tour in support of "The System Has Failed", which came out in September 2004. The latest MEGADETH release, "Greatest Hits: Back to the Start" ( Capitol), entered the Billboard chart at No. 65 and has sold 95,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

At this point Dave could have dropped Megadeth and just called it Mustaine. Either way his legion of fans, myself included, would have gladly bought the new CD and attended the next tour. What, would he not have played Megadeth songs if he dropped the name? One thinks not. One thing is for certain, Dave will probably put out the same quality metal that we've come to expect, play the songs that have become anthems to most of us and continue to be at the forefront of the American metal scene.

Take it from me. This is a legal play. The whole Mustaine/Ellefson lawsuit and coutersuit centered on rights to the Megadeth name and subsequent earnings.
Coincidence that while this case was pending Dave announced he was folding the name Megadeth? Expect a full resolution and/or settlement with Ellefson soon on those legal issues. I think the use or retirement of the Megadeth name was used as the ultimate bluffing chip against Ellefson's $60 MILLION lawsuit.

This news kicks ass. Love the new album, and the new lineup. Fuck the haters. Whether or not you believe the new guys are comparable to the former lineup, one thing was certain on this year's tour- there was a new energy in this band that's been missing for years. Dave did his part by writing a great album worthy of the Megadeth name, and the new guys did theirs by stepping in on short notice and kicking ass live without all the chemistry issues that plagued the old crew.
Good luck to Dave. The next album should be even better!

Just buy the first four albums and that's all you need of Megadeth? Oh really? The old stuff is overrated. The only good one of those first four is Rust in Peace. I just listened to Peace Sells album and there are only about 3 good songs out of 8. So Far So Good is even more patchy. The new album is far better. So is Youthanasia. Nostalgia is blind. So, Dave, keep going and keep trying to better Rust In Peace.

Gee, I seriously thought the game was over. Ah well, either decision he made we still would have got the same product (music wise). At least this means MacDonough and the Drovers get to record under the Megadeth same, it legitimises them in the Megadeth world and fuck knows they deserve it.
I want to see what happens next!

TSHF was a return to form (minus two or three not so good songs), so this seems to be the right decision.
Now that Mustaine is working with hungry musicians again, who are total metalheads (unlike a certain japanese-pop guitarist) and who can contribute to the songwriting, I'm looking forward to another strong Megadeth album and tour. Bring it on!
Plus, Megadave's mother is from Essen, Germany, and that's a huge bonus in my book, haha!

is possibly the biggest sellout in metal. You can sit here and argue it, but they are a joke. I like Megadeth, dont get me wrong, but TSHF was more laughable than St. Anger, cause at least St. Anger was an attempt to be a band again. TSHF was just an attempt to sell another cd with failed songs from the past where Dave did nothing but bitch for half the songs.
Oh well, if Megadeth is still around...well...it's really just Dave and always has been. Bleh...

Hmmm...this is kind of cool I think. Their (or his) last album was alright, but just sounded a bit tired, dated and shitty in places I found - but I'm still a fan of his work generally. I think it would be awesome for him and Jeff Waters to play on the next record and put some fire into it, RIP style. A bit more thrash would be appreciated (by his fans at least).

If Megadeth had threatened to split 5 years ago I couldn`t have given a shit. Cryptic Writings was average at best, Risk was an abomination. Since then however, with a decent album ( TWNaH ) and a superb one ( TShF ) behind them, Mustaine seems revitalised. I saw them twice this year and they were superb both times, I`m really looking forward to what this new line up will produce with the next album. TShF has sold reasonably well BTW, certainly not to the levels of their old stuff but worldwide it`s done just fine. It`s charted in most countries across the world, quite highly in much of Europe. Indeed, it went top 20 in America. This is hardly "disastrous". Plenty of metal bands would love to have sales like this.

and it's great! Even b-sides Megadeth are better than A side Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax combined ahah. Just look at Hidden treasures for proof and songs like New world order and One thing.

I'm very happy that he keeps Megadeth alive. TSHF was amazing and the last tour was also. This line-up kills live and i prefer them if i compared to the TWNAH line up and when i saw Live at the Fillmore on the Greatest hits album and saw Marty acting like if he was in Sugar Ray.... I sure don't miss him even though he's one of my favorite guitar player. But if he doesn't like metal anymore, he's better in Japan and NOT in Megadeth.

Why are people bashing the guy? There is not alot of bands as old as his that can still write good albums. What was the last good Metallica album again? And as for attendance figures for the tour...look at all the others this year. I even saw a Judas Priest show that only only brought in 1200 people listed here! Lets face it, kids in America are having hip-hop shoved down their throats. Only people who go to these shows now are old schoolers and kids that think for themselves.

The System Has Failed didn't sell very well at all and that album was wank. There was only acouple of good solo's on that album, and acouple just seemed to go no where, the last good Megadeth album was Countdown. Dave really should've gone solo with this line-up well, because basicly it's JUST HIM.
Dave Mustaine is a mediocre guitarist at the most but he's better then Kirk Hammett and Kerry King.
Le.Dieu-I hope you know that Marty Friedman does still listen to metal music and owns the shit out of Dave and the new line up, Risk wasn't exactly Marty's fault. It was the producer's idea and Mustaine let it happen so by all means, it's Dave's fault.
Theroman-Maybe the reason people bash Dave, because he's a douchebag? Which is true he is.

I just woke up. I was on the show last night, and my aching bones are saying "THIS WAS GODDAMN AWESOME!!!". I still cant believe how the show was. I almost cried when they played A Tout Le Monde...and when they cranked up Reckoning Day and Skin O My Teeth, I thought I could die a happy girl. Thank you so much, Dave, Glen, Shaun and James for such a great gift!!
MEGADETH, MEGADETH...AGUANTE MEGADETH!!!!

Actually, that`s bollocks about Friedman. I`ve read an interview with him where he said he listened to a lot of pop and soft rock music and was trying to steer the band in that direction. It can hardly be a coincidence that since he`s left Megadeth they`ve started releasing metal albums again after the horror show of Risk. As for sales figures, why do people constantly claim TShF was a commercial failure? Last I saw ( April 2005 ) it had sold 150,000 in America alone, which considering the state of heavy / thrash metal in the States is quite impressive. It also charted in Germany, the UK, Canada, Greece, France, Finland, Sweden, Holland...doubtless it did well in South America where metal still seems to be huge. If you don`t like Megadeth, fair enough, but don`t make up rubbish that isn`t true.

Marty says he also listens to different type's of music not just metal 24/7 And the albums Marty has released are way better then any thing that Megadeth will ever attempt to release in the future.

Maybe now that both parties have expressed willingness to speak again we can possibly see these great live acts perform as long as Megadeth doesn't perform anything from albums after Youthanasia and Metallica refrains from playing the majority of St.Anger. I could see it drawing alot of people or at the very least Metallica playing Gigantour as Dave has expressed interest in seeing.

What a fucking surprise this is! Dave Mustaine will continue with Megadeth! I guess maybe he idea of an artist buying his own solo album to make a sale didnt sit too well with him.

Metallica playing Gigantour? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Why would they play 2nd fiddle on a failed experiment of a tour?
Metallica still fills large arena's,so it would have to be Megadeth joining their tour. But, Dave is to much of a little bitch to face the fact that his band will never out perform Metallica in any aspect.
I see megacrotch playing with the Jesus freak from Korn very soon. Or maybe he can get GNR to co-headline next year since their album is on the verge of being finished, lol.

Let's see....wearing suits, cutting hair, "oooh baby", and "jumping back on the bandwagon" they helped create...please, none of that fucking matters if you're a real music fan. Get off your high horse...
as if Megadeth hasn't changed their style...everything Metallica did, Megadeth mirrored. Changing their style...again, say what you want. Nothing about Load/Reload is unmetal. It's metal, just a differnet kind, and St. Anger is fall from nu-metal. People use that term to anything they dont like...it's LAME.
The MTV thing...hate to break it to you, megadeth came first on MTV before Metallica...not Metallica's fault they made it and Megadeth didn't...
same riffs for so long? ya...Holy Wars ring a bell...two fucking minutes of the same boring riff at hte beginning...
movie portraying them as pussies or people? You have a problem with them trying to get back on track, yet TSHF has nothing but Dave bitching about the old days...
you are not only fucking stupid, you are a hypocrite. Moron
