DARK FUNERAL Vocalist Says He Was 'Somewhat Impressed' By Fan's Murder Of Chilean Priest

DARK FUNERAL vocalist Emperor Magus Caligula has commented on the murder of an Italian Catholic priest in Chile last year at the hands of a self-proclaimed DARK FUNERAL fanatic. On July 24, 2004, Rodrigo Orias, 26, slit Father Faustino Gazziero's throat, smeared his face with the victim's blood and then stabbed himself several times in the chest and neck with the same knife while hundreds of churchgoers at Santiago's Metropolitan Cathedral watched in horror. Orias ( photo#1, photo#2, posing in Chile with MARDUK), who had a pentagram branded on the left side of his chest (covering his heart) and several other symbols of the occult tattooed on his body ( photo of one of Orias' tattoos), reportedly asked Caligula during the Swedish black metal band's visit to Santiago in 2003 to burn an inverted cross on Rodrigo's arm with a cigar — a "mark" which Orias later planned to make into a tattoo. Following the murder, DARK FUNERAL were bombarded with e-mails from the Chilean media wanting to know whether or not the band enourages their fans to kill priests. ”I burnt him with a Cohiba, a very fine cigar," recalls vocalist Emperor Magus Caligula in the latest issue of the Swedish magazine Close-Up. "That night is a bit of a blur, because I was wasted on Pisco, Chilean cognac. Anyway, this guy came up to me and asked me to burn a cross on his arm. I'm not one to say no, so I puffed on the cigar to get it hot enough and he got his cross. I didn't press the cigar against his skin several times, instead I dragged it like a soldering-iron up and down his arm. He didn't seem to be feeling any pain. He was ecstatic that he was able to meet us. Afterwards we had our picture taken together and I thought he was a cool guy." "Before we found out the name of the killer, I though it was another fan," says DARK FUNERAL guitarist Lord Ahriman. "A guy in Santiago [the capital of Chile] just stood there crying when he met me. He knew everything about DARK FUNERAL. It was creepy. He'd bought the same guitar as the one I have, a BC Rich Warlock, and he had desecrated graves to honor us. He said, 'My Lord, give me an order and I will execute it.'" "People ask us if our music caused the murder. I don't think so," says Emperor Magus Caligula. "Sure, we sing about killing Christians and blood and feathers falling from angels are present in a lot of the lyrics. Maybe the music triggered him somehow, but he probably would have harmed someone even if he hadn't been listening to [ DARK FUNERAL]. He was not well. But I have to say that I'm…er, SOMEWHAT impressed. He deserves some credit. You’re not supposed to say that, but I don't care."

Musicians have the Courage of their convictions.....The Main Problem with Metal at the moment is that 99% of it is just Pantomime and Marketing Fakery (for example I mean honestly, at what point did Those little Jewish Boys Anthrax become Satanists?)

I think you've hit a rather big nail on the Head there....Once of the Big Problems with being a 'MetalHead' is that it doesn't actually have an Cultural Significance or Bind you into kind of group with a collective ideology....It's completely diverse, hence the amount of arguments you see on here.
I can see that, as a Metalhead, you would like to be distanced from such a standpoint, because you feel it refelcts badly on you...That's most likely why BM set itself so far apart from the Mainstream originally, so it could have it's own rules that weren't affected by the need to say the right thing, or be politically correct or what have you.....

I hate Christianity and all religions, and the main reason for this is because they are used as justification for murder. Satanism is no different, it's still a bunch of fucking sheep. i think we need to take a break and look at this comment. while i don't condone murder of anyone, but i at least respect the man for saying what he feels. i guess he's just impressed that one of his fans took something that far, and deep down i think thats an understandable feeling, as long as there is some sense of horror and disdain that goes along with it. i think in a way listening to metal is a way to get away from the ultra-politically correctness of the world, and while this comment may fly in the face of accepted thought at least he's not slinging bullshit around.

look at how many of the members in scandinavian bands that have a crime record of assault, hate crime, church burning and even murder. most of these guys do mean it. if you're listening and supporting bands like dark funeral, dissection, marduk, emperor (samoth said in an old underground interview that saddam was one of his biggest influences, ha ha!), you're supporting values that are fundamentally different from the US (or any western) constitution. nothing wrong with that, but you should at least be aware of it.

I think it's awful that the poor priest was attacked in so brutal an assault.
I mean, just think of all the little Chilean kids going without their necessary fix of papal anal abuse. For some of those sorry, impoverished urchins it's all one has to look forward to. A warm and deep visit from the priest and his fluids of enlightenment.

no- i myserlf can tell the diff. between Pi$$ and BM, but it is hard to distiguish between BM and FUCKING RAP! the american rap scene is where we stick our degenerates.
DISCLAMER!- i have limited experience with Death, Black, (really anything with a cookie monster vocal) the lyrical content is much the same in what i have heard, they don't talk the same diction, but the same level of the black shit i have heard is about the white equivilent as say, that two-bit bullet catcher and that little white boy that is going to get killed if he don't shut his fucking mouth!

Hell, I don't listen to black metal and I know those bands FAIL, miserably.
Also, moshing is something you'll rarely see in real metal shows in Europe (maybe the UK being the exception). It just, rarely occurs.

blsabob, I'm a big guy. I used to work out a lot, but stopped because I fucked up my lower back. That was about 8 months ago and since then I've atrophied. But, when I was in it full swing, I was lifting some heavy weight. I used to workout with 225 on bench, 110 on curls, blah blah blah. I did it for my health, self esteem and also out of necessity because of where I live. You have to be strong to live in the mountains like I do.
What's my point? Not all big dudes are pussies trying to hide behind their brawn. I got the sense that you may be generalizing.

Dark Funeral are actually really nice guys. If they really believed in murder you would have heard about them being arrested and thrown in jail by now (like other BM bandmembers in the scene). Caligula is certainly NOT an asshole, nor does he really condone murder in any way. However, he does always speak his mind no matter what people think & he likes to cause a stir-which is exactly what he did obviously-judging by people's reactions. I'm sure he would be very amused at how many people got pissed off & freaked out by his comments! He's a cool guy, smart & very funny. People need to lighten up. It's all about the image.

...and not that I care what any paticular member of a group thinks, I'll listen to anyone based on thier music. Music doesn't "make" anyone "do" anything. He made the choice to kill the priest, and this vocalist has made the choice to condone in a round about way. Doesn't mean I'm going to quit listening to them, it just means that one guy feels that way, and I disagree, but thanks to our first amendment rights, I can't tell this guy what to say or believe.
They're not one of my favorites, but then again, I listen to all different sorts of metal. None of it makes me wish death or harm on anyone...hell that will come soon enough as it is anyway....
