CRADLE OF FILTH Fan Convicted Of Wearing 'Religiously Insulting' T-Shirt

According to a story published in the October 18, 2005 edition of the Metro newspaper, a British teenage heavy metal fan has been handed a community service order for wearing an offensive t-shirt. Adam Shepherd, 19, was reportedly convicted under new anti-hate laws which ban people from displaying religiously insulting signs. The teenager was arrested after a woman complained to police when she saw his shirt, which promotes extreme heavy metal band CRADLE OF FILTH. The t-shirt shows a picture of a nun in a pornographic pose. On the back is a comment about Jesus (view the t-shirt design at this location). The top was being worn by Shepherd's girlfriend when a police officer approached her. As soon as the teenager realized there was a problem, he told the officer it was his and swapped tops with his girlfriend. But he refused to take it off or cover it up and was arrested. Shepherd, who bought the shirt in his hometown of Weymouth, Dorset, admitted the charge. Weymouth magistrates gave him 80 hours community service and told him to pay £40 costs (approx. $71). Meanwhile, MediaWatchWatch.org.uk reports that Adam "can't have been prosecuted under the 'new anti-hate laws' because they do not exist." However, a bit of research shows that the wearing of this T-shirt has led to at least two previous convictions in the U.K. Dale Wilson, 35, of Norwich, was arrested by two police officers as he walked to the newsagents on Halloween 2004. He pleaded guilty to "religiously aggravated offensive conduct." He was eventually discharged and told to "grow up." He paid £150 costs (approx. $266), and the judge ordered that the T-shirt be destroyed. Back in 1997, Rob Kenyon, 29, of London was found guilty of committing the offense of "Profane Representation under the 1839 Act" by Bow Street Magistrates Court. He was fined £150. CRADLE OF FILTH drummer Nicholas Barker was also arrested in Dover and charged with "creating a public disorder" for wearing the same t-shirt. There were no further proceedings against him. From the NME: In 2001, the then-Lord Provost of Glasgow, Alex Mosson, campaigned to have the t-shirt prevented from being sold at Tower Records. The record shop was raided on two occasions by police, and eventually agreed to stop stocking the garment. The Catholic League of America, back in 1998 (amusing "Victory for Sickos" story) and 1999 (their call to action), also complained bitterly about the t-shirt.

Anyone that thinks that there should be laws that force us to "be nice" should be forcibly sodomized repeatedly. Think about what you are supporting - Government control of your mouth and wardrobe. What next, forcing people to wear green on St. Patty's Day so they can "Show some Respect" as MindWar put it? Another question- Who decides? Who gets to decide what's offensive and what's acceptable? Who gets to tell me what shirt I'm allowed to wear? Are words (our main tool of communication) really all that bad? Are people so afraid of written and spoken words that we need to make laws PROTECTING people from fucking WORDS?!?!

i went to school with a girl who used to have that shirt, i think it was in the 7th or 8th grade she wore it a few times, i can't believe she actually got away with it a handful of times before she was told to change it or be suspended. haha.
whatever. if you wear something like that with language or sex or drug references in school i understand, but just simply in public is bullshit.

It's not an issue about whether the govt has a tight grip on our balls, its about having a lack of respect for others. Most people look at religious nuts and shake their heads or politely decline when they come aknockin. Same with this shirt...most people look at the kid and think he's pushing it, just like I think the guy knockin at my door selling his version of God is pushing it. Going around with a shirt like that is in many ways similar to the guy trying to sell you on his religion...they are both pushing something in your face. Laws are stupid to make concerning this shit because there will always be situations where some gets offended at someone else's behavior. First off that t-shirt is hilarious just because I can see Dani Filth saying "oh that's hilarious" as he makes the layout for the shirt, that and it reminds me of the "Get behind thee satan" shirt which is perhaps the funniest metal shirt I have ever seen. But, this whole situation is ridiculous, the fact that somebody got so offended by a shirt that they called the police, holy shit what an anal person. If you don't like someone's person appearance, sorry man, you just have to respect it, at least in my opinion. Hell, if I saw someone with a "kill whitey" shirt on I guess I would bitch about it to my friends but it wouldn't bother me that much. You know whatever, wear whatever you want, say whatever you want as long as it doens't impede on others. That should be the basic philosophy, not let's just make a law so these people will stop fucking whining. When it comes to NSBM bands (lyrics) I give no mercy, I make no compromise, even if the music is fairly good. That's my way.

I heard everything by Nokturnal Mortem before and after they became assholes. Except their latest MCD and album, because
I banned them from my collection.
As far as I'm concerned - they don't even exist anymore, stupid wankers. When their idiocy rules the brain - there's no escape for them.
Nokturnal Mortem weren't too great to begin with. Sure - a solid Ukrainian band only because the standards 'overseas' are pretty low. But honestly, comparing them to any main Black Metal music from Norway or Sweden - they don't even stand a chance. Not really.
What, just by adding a fiddle and some folk choir or flutes in the mix doesn't automatically makes a band great. Some of their old symphonic stuff is ok, but they damaged their credibility when they changed their style, at least for me.
I know, to "foreign' ears their music probably sounds mysterious and exotic, but overall -
Vocals are weak.
Drums are weak.
Some ok riffs.
Production sucks.
Nah..... not a great band.
Most bands that came out of former USSR have a silly habit to "borrow" styles, ideas and music from bands in other countries. And NM is no exception.
P.S. If you don't understand Russian, you have no clue how really stupid and retarded the Nokturnal Mortem lyrics really sound half of the time.

so you dont believe its possible to be able to seperate the music from the ideology and lyrics do you? music in its pure form is impartial, it belongs to no one but whomever cretaes it.....that the creator of it chooses to put to it an ideology is their business, i as a listener can separate it so i get what i want out of it...im not restricted to agreeing with what is indeed they're alluding to in their lyrics or image becasue i happen to listen to their music. i simply happen to like the nm sound, i thought the guitar tone on nechrist to be one of the most striking and darkest yet in black metal....i dont see how its any different from a religious person being a fan of deicide, and i know there are some who are. they may not agree with what benton is saying, and doubtleessly they dont, but they still might dig the hoffmann's riffs and solos. and as for fascists knocking on my door, im far more worried about the governments anti anything that can possibly be construed as discrimitory (such as a freedom to waer metal shirts and listen to certain forms of black/death/grind)law than iam anyone asking me about whether i agree with the views of nm or not.

Rod can like whatever he wants, but he is a fool for liking NSBM bands just because of the music. He never experienced the bullshit firsthand, and if he did- - trust me - he would change his mind.
There are better Black Metal bands to choose from. No need to go in the garbage to find stuff to eat if your fridge is full.

No I haven't spent money on any of the bands mentioned. I have a lot of friends who I copied those band's albums from.
Mayhem and Darkthrone are cool. If they would be proven (!) to have the ideology I would ban them without another thought. But it's bullshit. As long as I don't hear the stupid fascist lyrics - it's good enough for me.
It goes for Burzum too. I don't like that band as much anyway.

Like I said - I don't give a crap what anyone does in the privacy of their own home, freedom is for everyone, but I don't want to be exposed to the asshole fascist message in the music I listen to. I won't support fascists in anyway I can. Period!
It's really stupid listening to the fascist lyrics and banging your head at the same time. It's like having a stake and washing it down with piss for dinner.

Of course I won't submit. If the situation will occur, the outcome of it is still not certain. It could be that the prick will go down first, and if I happen to lose my life - well, that's a good reason to in my opinion.
I happen to experience similar situations before, and hey - I'm still here.

You spend so much time pointing the finger and spewing out aggression that you obviously don't spend much time reading (or writing) ANYTHING. Having a serious discussion with somebody that is obviously about 14 years old is going to go nowhere fast. (Wow, look at that, we're already there.)
While it is true that there is no Anti-Christ without Christ, your cartoonish, one dimentional "everything is black and white with no shades of gray" mentality is almost impossible to reason with until you come to a place where you've got an open mind.
I'll say this and then that will be it. I don't know you. I am only going to guess that the music that you listen to feels good for certain reasons. It fills gaps and expresses a certain kind of hate and violence that feels awesome. I get it. (I totally still love Slayer, but they don't dictate my religious views, obviously)
I just want you to start to look at the words and images that you are being sold and ask yourself this:
"If I'm filling a void in my life, is THIS what I want to fill it with?"
To quote Fight Club: "The things you own end up OWNING YOU". I ask you to keep your mind open and not be sold into some kind of worldly, dead-ended bullshit mentality that only leads to misery and depression. Keep your mind open.

i read more and more about how cradle of filth are a sell out and "popular" but how come we never come across any actual fans, only people accusing cradle of being a sell out!!!! Dani is amazing, cradle are amazing and i love them for their amazing music & tallent! not for their offensiveness or anything, i peronaly think that they are the best musicians i have ever heard. I love cradle of filth and nothing people say can ever ever change my mind.
