CRADLE OF FILTH Frontman Comments On Latest 'Offensive T-Shirt' Saga

CRADLE OF FILTH frontman Dani Filth has commented on the report published in the October 18, 2005 edition of the Metro newspaper that a British teenage heavy metal fan has been handed a community service order for wearing a CRADLE OF FILTH t-shirt.
Adam Shepherd, 19, was reportedly convicted under new anti-hate laws which ban people from displaying religiously insulting signs.
The teenager was arrested after a woman complained to police when she saw his shirt, which shows a picture of a nun in a pornographic pose. On the back is a comment about Jesus (view the t-shirt design at this location). The top was being worn by Shepherd's girlfriend when a police officer approached her. As soon as the teenager realized there was a problem, he told the officer it was his and swapped tops with his girlfriend. But he refused to take it off or cover it up and was arrested.
Shepherd, who bought the shirt in his hometown of Weymouth, Dorset, admitted the charge. Weymouth magistrates gave him 80 hours community service and told him to pay £40 costs (approx. $71).
Speaking to Kerrang! magazine, Dani Filth said, "It is with some concern that poor Adam's plight is acknowledged. Defaming organized religion openly in public is now a crime? What is wrong with England? Still, the litter problem on our city streets should improve dramatically if they keep handing out 80-odd hour community punishment orders willy-nilly. The country will be spotless in no time, a sure sign that God works in mysterious ways, even through us!"

Is a nice enough fella..and "aknowledging" this incident by paying the fine would be even better a way to show the world how much he cares about his fans... after all he makes money off the tshirts, so the gesture would be really cool.

I do enjoy Cradle of Filths music somewhat, but it is Danni Filth's literature and wonderful useage of the english language that impresses me. His poetry and lyrical content is unsurpassed by any other front man I know. If someone knows of a person of Danni's equal in that regard, please enlighten me.

Reading all the comments here, and just generally surveying the state of metal today... it just makes me sick. I'm 34. Been listening to hard rock/metal since I was 5, when my babysitter took me to my first KISS show. Went to school for music, got a degree, taught music after that, and played and recorded with a number of bands. Have literally thousands of CD's (almost all metal) in my collection. And you know what?
Effective immediately, I'm walking.
Today's metal 'culture' makes me sick. I always hated the mainstream pop scene, because it seemed so fake to me. All about image and sales. Never about art. And the people who followed it? Blind, weak-minded sheep who bought into the image that was prostituted before them. I identified with metal because it felt like the 'anti-image' music. Music for people who didn't need an image, because we were comfortable just being ourselves; honest and true. A music scene where anyone was welcome to join; you didn't need to be pretty, smart, rich, or anything. It was a blue-collar brotherhood that meant good music, good times, and good comraderie. It was REAL because the people that it was comprised of were real. But something has happened to the scene I grew up in....
It died.
Today's metal and it's 'scene' are just as bad, IF NOT WORSE, than anything in the mainstream. Now metalheads bitch about who has the best vocal growls, who's satanic and who's not, why one band rules and another one sucks, and worst of all there are all the damn childish snobs who frequent boards like this, dictating their bullshit rules and credos to the rest of us about what's truly 'metal' and what's not. As if there's a required tempo, gutteral quality, level of satanic imagery, hard to find patches for your 1976 denim jacket, etc. Consider this analogy- it should be easy for anyone who's ever walked alone through a bad neighborhood: You're walking along, minding your own business, and a some scary dude walks right past you. He minds his own business just as you do, like you're not even there. Next time, as you're walking again, the same scary dude and his three scary friends walk by you. This time they pick shit with you for no good reason other than to try to outdo each other. It's likely that none of them really mean what they're doing, but God forbid they let their guard down and look like normal human beings in front of each other. That just wouldn't be 'cool'. The sad result is you're the one bearing the brunt of their bad behavior. Ever had this happen? I don't have to walk in bad neghborhoods anymore, but I can still observe this phenomenon at just about any metal show I go to. It's the 'herd mentality', and it's rampant in today's metal culture. And you know what herds are for-- sheep.
It's all STUPID, and worse yet, completely meaningless. There's just no reason for it.
It used to be that a metal show was one of the world's best places to meet people who were real, honest, down to earth, and just plain cool, JUST LIKE THE MUSIC WAS. It's not about the music or the fraternal element anymore, and it hasn't been for years. Now it's all about things that don't mean shit, and it's just plain sad. I'm not saying there aren't any good metal bands nowadays, just that aren't so many good fans anymore. Just a bunch of dumbasses trying to 'out-metal' one another. Today it's all about who wears the most blasphemous T-shirts, who walks around the concert hall like the biggest badass, who has the longest hair, the most tattoos, who is the 'blackest', the 'truest', the 'most grim and frostbitten', whatever. Satan this, Satan that, blah, blah, blah. One must think the devil himself laughs at the absurdity of it all, even while he's getting what he wants- God's flock. On that matter, to all the self-proclaimed Satanists out there, GROW UP. You have no idea how stupid you sound, and worse, how stupid you'll feel one day when maturity finally lands on your doorstep and you can't take back all the words you wish had never drooled out of your adolescent pieholes. Your so-called beliefs represent an impossible paradox. Impossible in that to be a true Satanist, you must truly believe in Satan. And to truly believe in Satan, yet still choose him and whatever eternal damnation is offered over a loving Creator and a chance at eternal life is like proclaiming that you actually like smashing yourself in the face with a hammer. Might not be a bad place to start, come to think of it. Could knock some sense into you. All in all, it's a joke that parodies itself over and over again. Like the Spinal Tap movie, only now fully realized in true life fashion. It's become a game, and might as well become a game show. I can see it now.
Now, I should add, I know a few of you really don't fit this description. Some of you really do get it. And you'll know yourself to be one of those few if you can actually grasp my points. To you I say, enjoy your metal while it lasts. Stay true, and stay cool, but most of all, be YOUR TRUE SELF, with no regard paid to the hypocrisy that surrounds you. Hopefully your tenure in the metal community won't leave you as disillusioned as I've become. To the rest of you, I challenge you to be creative, and try this exercise to to test yourself on how 'real' you really are:
Imagine you are a small child, barely old enough to lift food to your mouth. You are placed on a deserted island with provisions to last a lifetime, and all of life's options are laid out before you: music, clothing, and hairstyles, among others. As you grow, with no human contact and no artificial or media stimulus, which things would you be drawn to? What music, what clothing, what anything? Consider this, then ask yourself: Would you really choose the same things you have chosen in your present life? And if not, why? Because if your answer, your really HONEST answer, is 'no', then you must admit that somehow, in at least some ways, you are not being true to yourself. That is not 'metal'. And neither are you. Go find your herd.
And with that, I finally admit defeat. Not for me personally, but for the music and the scene I once loved. The innocence and purity that once defined this genre have given way to all the same art-destroying vices that are the foundation to all things shallow and meaningless. To those of you under the age 30, I'm sorry to say, you completely missed the Golden Years, and they're not coming back. Too bad you couldn't have been there, it was a blast.
And to everyone offended by any of this, feel free now to start 'slamming me in the press' with your arguments and retorts. I don't care, because I'll never be back on this board again. Tomorrow morning, the collection is going where it belongs-- in the trash with the rest of the 'scene'.
As for your collections, happy CD shopping, see you at Wal-Mart.

Harsh and ever so slightly bullshit! where I live, every weekend, there is some arse spouting off crap about 'the almighty lord' and 'jesus will save you' in the middle of the busiest shopping centres.
