MOTÖRHEAD's LEMMY To Address Welsh Assembly On Drug Abuse - Nov. 1, 2005
MOTÖRHEAD frontman Lemmy Kilmister has accepted an invitation by Tory Welsh assembly member William Graham to address the assembly on drug abuse. The 59-year-old singer will give his talk on Thursday (Nov. 3) — before a gig in Cardiff.

"Frankly, young people are more likely to listen to him," Graham told the BBC News.

Graham was prompted to contact Lemmy by his researcher after a recent Channel 4 documentary on the band, "Live Fast Die Old", where he spoke about his hatred of heroin.

It is also the subject of his song "Dead Men Tell No Tales", and in an interview on MOTÖRHEAD's web site, he said heroin had killed "a lot of my generation," adding, "It's the only drug I hate."

The AM said he was keen to publicise the anti-drugs campaign and it was more likely to reach its target audience via a rock star "however many committees we have and however much money we spend".

Graham told the BBC News that while Lemmy had "a reputation for pushing the boundaries of experience in all aspects of life," he had shown in the documentary why he believed could not only "erase your artistic potential, it can erase your life."

He added: "It is a powerful message, delivered with all the understanding gained from the unique lifestyle Lemmy has pursued. It is a view of life that deserves wider consideration".

The AM, who chairs the school funding committee, admitted his knowledge of MOTÖRHEAD was limited to their biggest hit, "Ace of Spades". But he said with MOTÖRHEAD's reputation of "play hard, work hard and enjoy life to the full," Lemmy's words would be able to reach music fans directly, "with maximum impact guaranteed".

Graham's researcher, Paul Williams, has his own connection to Lemmy.

In the 1970s he wrote lyrics for a Welsh rock band, TOUCH, who once supported Lemmy's former band, HAWKWIND.

Williams approached MOTÖRHEAD, and Lemmy agreed to take part when the band were in Cardiff.

They will play at Cardiff University on Thursday night, a few hours after Lemmy's appearance at the assembly.

"Lemmy is taking it incredibly seriously, and his manager says he's writing a speech," said Williams.

i'm not surprised he's taking it seriously. And i'm glad he's doing it. And no Motorhead should NEVER retire actually. Their latest album, Inferno is probably their best one. Yes better than Ace of Spades, Bomber and any other classic you care to mention. Even though i love such albums don't get me wrong. Motorhead just NEVER disappoint. And live they're better now, with Lemmy being 60, then when he was 24. Don't believe me? Just buy their new live DVD Stagefright, crank it up, and let your brain explode.
MOTORHEAD=GODS.

a speed freak? I remember an interview with him where he said that his doctor told him back in the mid-'80s that if he STOPPED using amphetamines, the shock to his metabolism might kill him.

blessed be.

Motorhead and In Flames. Fair do's, Lemmy knows how to choose his support bands. 2002 it was Anthrax, 2004 it was Sepultura...now In Flames. Awesome stuff!

This would be very interesting to see. Lemmy is a spectacular speaker. I just wonder if he's going to be able to smoke while he's giving his lecture.

As long as he ends his statements like this:

"Kiss the whip, eat the gun,
Tell me it ain't fair,
Midnight victim, hit and run,
I'm so bad, baby I don't care."

it will be all good.

that he is a hypocrite, even if you freak out here.
Lemmy is one heavy drug user, which is well known between promoters or local dealers at venues who have to get him the drugs. That is a stupid thing he would lecture about how evil drugs are and then get into the Tourbus doing speed and crack..... !!!!

Those calling him a hypocrite need to wise uo. Lemmy isn't necessarily speaking out against drug use. He's speaking out against drug ABUSE. It's a fine -even invisible- line, but there is a difference. The fact that Lemmy is still alive and kicking more ass than ever proves he knows where that line is. By the way, I'm 100% straight edge and condone mental discipline over chemical crutches to compensate for your own insecurities (see: self-hatred) but I can respect a man like Lemmy who lives like he does and has the balls to avoid letting it destroy him.
