AEROSMITH To Start Work On New Album In the Spring - Nov. 13, 2005
AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry has told The Providence Journal that the band will start work on a new studio record in the spring. Ever since the second album of their comeback, 1987's "Permanent Vacation", the band have worked with outside songwriters such as Desmond Child, Diane Warren and Jim Vallance. Perry says he's not sure yet whether that'll happen again, but whatever happens, he's OK.

"It's inspiring. When you bring someone in, they have an idea of what an AEROSMITH song should be, and it's interesting to hear what their interpretation of the AEROSMITH sound is — whatever that is," he explained. "It's always fun to do.

"We've got piles of stuff — some of it works and some of it doesn't. . . . It depends on what the vibe is when we start rolling."

AEROSMITH are currently on tour in support of their latest disc, "Rockin' the Joint". Recorded live at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, the new disc has renditions of hits such as "Same Old Song and Dance", "Draw the Line", "Walk This Way" and "Train Kept A-Rollin'" (and the video side of the DualDisc includes the warhorses "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion"), but the band also rips through such less-known songs as "Beyond Beautiful", from 2001's "Just Push Play" album; "No More No More", from 1975's breakthrough "Toys in the Attic"; and "Seasons of Wither", said to be singer Steven Tyler's favorite AEROSMITH song, from 1974's "Get Your Wings".

"They're all favorites of ours," Perry said of the songs on "Rockin' the Joint".

"At this point," he added, "you have such a backlog of songs that you could almost go out there and play a whole set of 'new material' that you wrote 5 years ago, 8 years ago, 15 years ago. And it's all new stuff because it never really got played live."

The record is taken from one performance, rather than pieced together from many shows on a tour, as most live records are. The Joint, at the Hard Rock Hotel, is much smaller than most of the giant venues AEROSMITH plays, and Perry says that helped.

"You just feel like you can cut loose a little more when you know it's going to be packed," he said. "You give yourself a little more latitude to play the esoteric songs, the so-called album cuts that we don't often play in the big shows. . . .

"We try and represent each record when we're writing up the set list, but on this particular night — you know you're playing to people who have most of the records."

Aerosmith's safe, formulaic and generic writing has produced some of the most mundane rock outings ever since they reunited. Done with Mirrors was mostly Perry Project solo material. That was the their last decent record. Perry's solo work is so much more in the flavor of real rock n roll because it's done without the spectre of "Aerosmith" being attached to it. I don't want to point fingers at Tyler but none of the other members have really made any significant contributions in years. So I blame Tyler and his uninspired lack of vision or rut writing that he has fallen into. Perry is brilliant and I will alwas stand behind him as one of rocks most solid players but this is one instance where this news is nothing to get excited about. Brad Whitford also put out a great solo effort with Derek St. Holmes some years back but none of that spilled over into Aerosmith either. A seperation of Aerosmith would be better news for me or more solo efforts.

This is one band that maybe should get back into drugs in order to try and recapture the desire or hunger they lost when they got sober because I don't think they've put out anything considered pure bluesy rock like they did when they were fucked up.

Aerosmith are still pretty kick ass live. Hell, last time I saw them They opened up w/ "Toys in the Attic". It was awesome. Thats still the best album they put out. "Rocks" is awesome as well.

In the '70's, they wrote their songs by jamming, and that's how they got this real pure rock. In the '80's, working with that professionnal writer, they lost most of their grit. Hope they'll understand that. Because they can still smoke. "Honkin' On Bobo" was pretty cool.

At their age, with the career they had, they shoudn't worry about hits anymore. Just rock.

Regarding the Project - at the end they were horrible, and if in fact Done With Mirrors was leftover Project stuff then it's no surprise that it was cool - but substandard. And I'm the biggest Joe Perry fan ever - my band did a string of dates with the Project on their last tour - and they, and Joe in particular, were beyond pathetic. I guess that makes his recovery all the more amazing.

MusicManOhio - one good song? Get the buckeyes out of your ass you idiot - Aerosmith's got more good songs than you've got brain cells.
