MUSIC CHOICE Remembers Late PANTERA Guitarist 'DIMEBAG' DARRELL ABBOTT - Nov. 16, 2005
Music Choice, the premier, multi-platform music network, remembers legendary hard rock/metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, whose life ended tragically on December 8, 2004. Music Choice On Demand will feature the best of Dimebag on its video-on-demand service from November 28 to December 11. The Dimebag Darrell Tribute Hot List showcases four music videos featuring Dimebag, along with a musical and personal tribute to Dimebag from fellow guitarist and best friend Zakk Wylde of BLACK LABEL SOCIETY.

The music videos for "Walk", "Revolution Is My Name", and "Drag The Waters" from PANTERA, the band that featured Dimebag on guitar for over two decades along with brother Vinnie Paul on drums, are included in the Dimebag Darrell Tribute Hot List, in addition to "Save Me" by DAMAGEPLAN, the band that Dimebag and Vinnie formed after PANTERA's breakup in 2003.

The Dimebag Darrell Tribute Hot List also includes Zakk Wylde's musical tribute to Dimebag, "In This River", performed by Zakk's band BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. Zakk is also featured in a clip that precedes the music video speaking about Dimebag shortly after his death. "He (Dimebag) ruled the world and still does," said Wylde. "He'll live forever like Randy (Rhoads) and Jimi Hendrix."

"Dimebag Darrell was one of the greatest rock/metal guitarists of all time," said Justin Prager, Director of Rock, Pop/Rhythmic Programming for Music Choice. "We join Dimebag's fans in celebrating his short life with our exclusive Dimebag Darrell Tribute Hot List."

Music Choice seem like good people to me. They had a photo of Dime up within a day of his murder on their metal channel saying R.I.P. I'm glad they are doing this.

COMMENT | Jake E Lee is the best

Jake E. Lee is hands down the best guitarist that Ozzy has ever had by miles.
Zakk Wylde at the other end of the spectrum is one of the most mediocre guitar players there is being no more special than a guy like Kirk Hammett in my book.

Go listen to the guitar solos on Bark at the Moon and The Ultimate Sin- way more squirelly, way more interesting, way more daring and unconventional than any solo that Randy Rhodes or Zakk ever did- and mind you Jake did it all with no whammy bar and a bunch of other weird ass techniques that Randy could never pull off.
Just go watch the Bark at the Moon and Ultimate Sin concert DVDs and tell me that Jake wasn’t the most exciting guitar player that Ozzy ever had.

Jake E. Lee’s creativity and technique are lightyears away from anything Randy Rhodes ever did. Randy Rhodes is good in a very by the book predictable kind of way- I wouldn’t characterize his guitar playing as adventurous or exciting the way you would with Jake. Rhandy’s claim to fame by his fans is his classical influence, so what, Rhandy is very 70s and if you are into the whole classical thing, why don’t you just go listen to Yngwie or Uli Jon Roth.

With Jake there’s this kind of mystique around him – a kind of oh shit what’s this guy gonna do next,- you didn’t get that with Randy or Zakk. Jake E. Lee was simply just ahead of his time as far as technique and style. That’s why we can’t characterize
Jake E. Lee as a neo-classical style player as you do with Rhodes. He is just a great player period-not tethered to any particular style. MANY GUITAR PLAYERS ARE CAPABLE OF SOUNDING AND PLAYING LIKE RANDY OR ZAKK BUT NO ONE CAN TOUCH WHAT JAKE E LEE DID IN HIS SOLOS WITH THE SAME TECHNIQUE AND ENERGY. Just the fact that Jake doesn’t use a whammy bar is just testament to how unbelievable he is.

Why do Bark at the Moon and Ultimate Sin get a bad rap? Because of the shitty 80s production- the overly effects saturated guitars, the height of Ozzy’s bad hair and bloated fat days not because of the guitar playing. People don’t like these albums because they don’t like mid 80s production, not the music or the playing themselves.
Especially on the Ultimate Sin. The grand canyon drum sound- going from Tommy Aldridge on Bark at the Moon down to Randy Castillo on the Ultimate Sin was definitely a downgrade and a step backwards as Randy Castillo is no where near as good as Tommy Aldridge- and that’s one of the reasons why people don’t like the Ultimate Sin. And yes the keyboards were cheesy on Bark at the Moon, but the guitar playing was friggin unbelievable.
Another reason why Bark at the Moon gets such a bad rap is that it has been remixed a few times and people who go back and listen to the Ozzy catalog are likely to hear one of the poorly mixed versions of the BATM album. The remixed version has these fake synthesizer bells at the beginning of Journey to the Center of Eternity and the original has actual Tubular Church bells. Go listen to the original mix of Journey to the Center of Eternity and tell me that is not a killer song and musically more interesting than anything Ozzy has ever done. Forget all the production, forget the overly saturated effects of Bark at the Moon and the Ultimate Sin, just go listen to the actual notes in Jakes solos- Randy or Zakk could never do that shit.

When Ozzy’s band had Tommy Aldridge on Drums and Jake E. Lee on guitar, it was the very height of musicianship in Ozzy’s band. That was when Ozzy had a really bad ass band. It wasn’t with friggin Mike Inez or Randy Castillo or Zakk, it was fuckin Bob Daisley, Jake E. Lee and Tommy Aldridge.
That was the killer band, not Lee Kerslake and Randy Rhodes.
Yes Randy had that young sparkle because he was doing neo-classical stuff in 1980 but Uli Jon Roth was doing that even better in the 70s. Randy is just a watered down version of Uli Jon Roth.

All I can say is go ask any professional guitar player or other professional musicians who really know what they are talking about, if you ask a guy like say George Lynch or someone like that who is a better guitar player Randy Rhodes or Jake E Lee, they will always say that Jake E. Lee was far more interesting to listen to and unpredictable and more exciting.
Randy was in the right place at the right time at the very beginning of Ozzy’s career but Jake E. Lee was the real genius. He is the most overlooked guitar legend there ever was and my favorite Ozzy guitar player hands down.

This is a very cool thing. Man does it suck that Dimebag is gone, still hit's hard. Zakk has taken this pretty hard too, it's always nice to see Zakk involved with anything to do with Dime.

Funny how a Jake E. Lee discussion started on a DIMEBAG thread.

I don't know if I can agree with you about why people didn't (or don't at this point in time) like the "Bark At The Moon" & "The Ultimate Sin" albums as much as the Randy Rhoads era albums. Besides the overly slick production (especially Ron Nevison's work on The Ultimate Sin) and the myriad of changes in Ozzy's lineup after Randy Rhoads died, I think these albums were sub-par because the songs were just not as good. Jake E. Lee is a hell of a guitar player. I thought his band BADLANDS put out records that put the 2 OZZY records he played on to shame.

The "Bark At The Moon" album at least had it's moments and did have a much more aggresive sound than "The Ultimate Sin". The main problem I have with "The Ultimate Sin" is that there's so much filler on it. The only songs I can tolerate are the singles. That's not good by any means. Ron Nevison struck gold with HEART in 1985 with his oversaturated production, but look at what he did for KISS on "Crazy Nights" in 1987 (to think, KISS waited all through 1986 for NEVISON to be available JUST to record that SHIT SANDWICH of an album)!! It's basically the same thing that happened with Ozzy on "The Ultimate Sin", lots of filler & a few radio friendly singles.

THANK GOD FOR THE BOMB = worst OZZY song of all time

I'll be dialing that shit in for sure.

I've already got over a dozen DVD concerts of Dime from the "92" Vulgar era ( when Phil was actually not a dick), up to the fall of "04" Damageplan, and Dime was ALWAYS on point, ripping shit up with one off solo's,riffs i'm deeply priviliged to study and incorporate on a daily basis.

BTW...
Jake was great and a fav of mine, yes he's underated but no legend.

Randy was a pioneer that set the standard for the eighties, no doubt a deserved legend.

Dime was the equivlent for the nineties, and to embellish somewhat on an earlier post... a controlled ,drunken, hell raising, god damn good time loving, heart twice the size of texas, guitar slinging legend!

I met Zakk Wylde back in March and I had him sign a Dean Guitars poster of Dimebag that they were giving out at NAMM after he was killed. He looked at the poster and pointed up at the ceiling with tears in his eyes. He then signed it and said: "That's our fuckin' boy right there." The man lost his best friend!!!!! People need to show just a little bit more compassion. All the people who talk shit about Zakk seriously need to take a look at themselves. This guy has his own band and plays for Ozzy fucking Osbourne!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure he's well off financially and he gets to tour the world. That's a lot more than what most people can say. The guy is trying to cope! Let him be for fucks sake!
