KURT COBAIN Documentary To Be Narrated By Late NIRVANA Frontman - Nov. 18, 2005
David Wilkins of The Daily World is reporting that a crew of documentary filmmakers from Los Angeles has been in Aberdeen, Washington this week, shooting a documentary on the life of the late Kurt Cobain — one that will be narrated by Cobain himself.

The producers are drawing on taped interviews the NIRVANA frontman did with Michael Azerrad, author of the NIRVANA biography "Come As You Are".

Using Cobain's own voice to tell the story and focusing on the place where he grew up, director AJ Schnack said, is the filmmakers' way of making the grunge rock star human again — instead of the untouchable icon his meteoric rise and tragic fall made him.

"I have a nephew and a cousin who have become big NIRVANA fans," said Schnack, 37. "To them, Kurt has become this huge, larger-than-life figure. You're completely unable to relate to him because he is such an icon. That's not how I felt about him when he was alive, and I feel like that's been lost. Especially because of the circumstances of his later life, and his death, I think now it's not really about the music or the fact that he really was just a human being. And so I really wanted to deconstruct that a little bit, and what better way than to just let him talk?"

Nivana's rise to fame and popularity of the early 90's was due almost entirely to, and nothing more than, a backlash against what I HATE to be called "Hair bands." The whole musical culture of the 80's, which emphasized talent...musicianship....as well as visual appearance, was rebelled against. The result: The antithesis of all of those bands, Nirvana. Very little tallent musically, no real visual image....unless you count dirty, frumpy clothes and hair that looked likt it hadn't been washed in a month as image. I'm not bad mouthing the dead guy, but come on, his songs were simple, his voice was terrible, especially live, and as far as rock icons go, he is nowhere near the same league, let alone ballfield as Hendix, Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jim Morrison..The 80's were a great time, and I loved all that music. But it couldn't last forever. It had to come to end, and sadly, these monkies ushered it in. I will admit a begrudging repect for Grohl, who has obviously proven his musical chops, but the other two were highly over rated.
I agree with Henry Rollins, who said that he would much rather have someone like Bon Jovi saying "Are you ready to rock?" then someone like this that writes songs about how miserable life is and tells everyone to stop smiling. These guys set the tone for the 90's, which in my opinion...SUCKED. You no longer had to have any real talent to get signed. The worse you played, and the worse you looked, the better it seemed. Listen to almost anything from the 80's compared against anything else from the early to mid 90's, and there's just no comparison. For that, I will never forgive Cobain. For me, he helped to kill that rock n' roll spirit.

Fuck Kirk Cobain- I'm glad he's dead

R@ttlesn@ke hit it right on the head by saying that Nirvana killed metal and rock and roll.

What do Nirvana and The Greatful Dead have in common? The only people that like either of those 2 bands are people who are not musicians. Ever notice that?

Kirk Cobain and Nirvana and Seattle Grunge fucking sucked and was the antithesis of everything you ever loved about the 70s and 80s. It was a big fuck you to everyone from Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin to Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Ynwie Malmsteen- basically anything 70s and 80s- anything rock and roll, anything heavy metal- any band- everything you have come to love.

Thanks to Nirvana we had nobodys like the fuckin Screaming Trees. The only half way decent band from the whole Seattle Grunge scene was Alice and Chains and that was due to the great singing - which by the way was a nod back to 80s influence.

When are people gonna get it- If you like Kirk Cobain and support and endorse his sorry ass, you must be anti rock and roll and anti heavy metal. People cannot put 2 and 2 together and I don't understand it. I don't see why people are so up on his nuts- I don't get why people think Nirvana and Kirk Cobain are so great.

Fuck I'm glad that Grunge died- you don't hear word 1 about fucks like Pearl Jam etc... these days - fuckin nobodies and thank god for that.

I'm from Washington and I'm embarressed to say that Grunge came from my state. I'm glad he's dead.

Unlike most of the haters on this thread, your arguments are intelligent and well-thought.

I have to disagree with some of your thoughts regarding 80s music, however. While it was a time of great music, it was also a time when some of the worst music came out. The aforementioned hair metal is an example of this; it was largely corporate, mostly pop, and often times bad. One can look at any number of bands such as Warrant, Firehouse, Enuff Z'Nuff, or White Lion as proof of this.

One can also look at Motley Crue and Def Leppard who had a good hard rock begining and almost became parodies of themselves once the hits starting rolling in.

Where-as The Darkness were a parody of theselves when they started and are becoming the bad pub-covers band that they always should have been ;-)

I think that having cobain narrating this is a truly great and inspired idea.

The difference between not knowing how to play an instrument & sounding like nirvana and BEING nirvana is huge - all members of Nirvana became multi-millionaires.

We get of on the technical ability and structure as much as the song itself. The vast majority of people are sheep and only care that they enjoy the sounds their hearing and thats cool...for them. I would much rather hear and would respect the opinions of those who know what really goes into this process and have some history to back their analysis up. Nirvana (and Kurt Cobain) were a band that wrote and recorded an okay first album, a really good- and wildly successful- second album, and a decent follow-up. They were no more, and no less. Kurt was not an innovator; nor was he the leader of a new musical movement. He was merely someone who was at the forefront of something that was about to explode. Thus, the fact that Nevermind was released at the beginning of this explosion was a only happy coincidence that Nirvana benefitted from.

The reason that he's remembered the way that he is, is largely due to the circumstances surrounding his death: a young man killing himself at the height of his popularity. If he'd waited 10 years to commit suicide- a time in which Nirvana probably would have recorded mediocre albums and broken up- I highly doubt that his death would have been viewed in the Lennonesque way that it was back in the mid 90s.

King Dinosaur- how can you say that :

"grunge" is just a made-up word that the media used because they don't know anything about underground rock music.

There was nothing "Underground" about Nirvana- in fact the only thing "underground" about Nivana is Kurt Cobain corpse in a cemetary somewhere now that he's dead- oh wait forgot his ashes were burned and split 3 different ways I forgot.

Nirvana was as corporate and bubble gum as any of the hair bands from back in the day.
Nirvana was just as comercial as any of the hair bands from the 80s. Okay hair metal has its cheezy parts- I'm not saying it doesn't -Here's the difference though between hair metal and grunge- Hair metal, as silly and lame as it was at times actually was played by good musicians.

Let's use examples of the 3 most heckled hair bands and I'll prove my point.

1) White Lion and 2) Winger. 3) Ratt 4) Dokken

I'm no die hard White Lion fan by any means but I will say this:

The difference is that Vito Bratta from White Lion is actually a really killer musician and Kurt Cobain was not nor were his contemporaries.

I hate Winger too but if you know anything about musicians, you know that Rod Morgenstein is a sick drummer -thats all I'm saying.

Even Ratt- Ratt cheesy? Yes! but, Warren DeMartini? - a fuckin great guitarist.

Dokken lame ? maybe at times but dude- George Lynch? A fuckin guitar master.

You have to look at the big picture-

Yes there were cheezy dudes in 80s hair metal but at least they were good musicians. That's what disagrees with me so much about the whole grunge scene- most of those bands were comprised of bad musicians- Nirvana a perfect example- none of those guys displayed any kind of virtuosity of their instrument- perfect example Dave Grohl- jack of all trades and master of none. Grunge bands were a marketing ploy with no real musicianship to speak of behind it.

Some of the dudes in Alice in Chains were good- take a guy like Mike Inez for example- but what camp did he come from ? Ozzy, hair bands etc... so..... are you gettin my point?

That's what sucked so hard about Grunge- if you're gonna sell out- fine but at least be a good musician.

i dont think nirvana sucked , but i will say it wasnt 4 me. i turned the radio off 4 that hair band period.i had sabbath , rainbow , nugent, early aerosmith to grow up with . music had a flat period there 4 awhile cause of the punk scene then motley crue hit . the first album was decent and that brought out all the clones and it sucked! i turned the friggin radiuo off. then got lucky suicidal tendancies , megadeth mettalica , anthrax hooked us up . anyway if its creative and its somewhat original im down 4 it. i agree grunge killed the lead guitar im glad to see its comin back . anyway im ramblin friggin long day lol peace

Nirvana didn't change anything. they were in the right place at the right time. Hair metal was already a joke by the time nevermind was released. People were sick of bands that had all the integrity and realism of a Disneyland attraction. The music was becoming secondary to the clothes the hair the pyro the distractions, etc. it wasn't rock n roll anymore, it was a fucking Las Vegas review. Enough was enough. Younger rock fans were ready for a revolution. They wanted bands they could relate to, not comic book figures.

Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, Smashing Pumpkins were all right there poised to pick up the fans that were sick of the phony shit. And they rode that wave of rebellion all the way to the bank. Kids didn't pay attention to the fact that these "underground" bands were being pushed by the same record labels, using the same marketing techniques and getting played on the same corporate radio stations and MTV as the band they supposedly rebelled against.

Nirvana wasn't very good, but then again neither were many of the bands from the past who supposedly defined their generations. It is more about a cultural unifying gestalt that revolves around a band or a genre. it really has little to do with quality musicianship or songwriting. its all about fitting a temporary cultural need.

Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains all had solos. Hell even Nirvana did.

Funny how you defend Nirvana while spewing out homophobic remarks left, right and centre. Kurt and Nirvana HATED homophobics, made that very clear (Kurt and Krist even frenchkisses live on air just to piss all the rednecks off). Glam bands are actually composed by homophobic redneck pathetically conceited rockstars and that's why Nirvana hated them. Judging from your comments, you should be right at home with GLAM, not grunge or Nirvana. Later.

was to fuck with Axhole Rose at an Empty-V Video Awards ceremony some years back, causing Axhole to threaten to kick Kurt's ass. Made Axhole look like the Asshole he was and is way back when dipshits were still worshiping the dipshit.

Kudos to Kurt for that. But booo on the music.

some REAL idiots here!! To say that Nirvana didn't start anything is like saying that Metallica, Korn, In Flames didn't satrted a new trend in music!! Those bands definded their respective genres. Wether you like their particular style or not you must give credit to those bands for starting a movement. And Nirvana were underground for a time just like Metallica, Korn, and In Flames. Nirvana STARTED the Grunge movement!! The other bands just followed. Plain and simple.

Britney Spears was asked once in an interview what the greatest album of all time was. Her response? The Backstreet Boys first album. Now we all know she's a dingbat, but my point is, consider her point of reference. She was a child of the 90's and she grew up listening to that crap. That don't make her right...just ignorant. Kinda like King Dinosaur.

DMJ, I would like to complement you on your very well thought out and highly articulate statement concerning my previous post. I applaud you for taking the high road and not attacking me without provocation...oh wait........nevermind. Strike that.
So, what you're basically saying is......
Def Leppard had a bigger album than Hysteria...in the 90's?
Bon Jovi had a bigger album than New Jersey......in the 90's?
The list could go on.....
Next, you'll say, in your trypically nasally little prepubsant whine, "But R@ttlesn@ke, those bands aren't metal."
Truse, but back then, they were considered as such.
Dude, you just keep settin' em' up, and I'll just keep knockin' em' down. Thanks for playin'.

For those of you who actually were alive back then < G >
I, at the time, listened to alot of bands of all genres..mostly in the hard rock area.
I lived in the area of Seattle and visted alot of clubs back then and saw alot of bands.
Hungry Crocodiles, Sweaty Nipples , Soundgarden , Mad Season [for all intensive purposes...a.k.a. A&C ] and visted many a wednesday nights at the Moore.
Sure...
there was a strong repitious sound floating around , I mean... Long before most of the States actually jumped on the bandwagon to.
But I gotta tell ya....
I will never forget the day that my buddy and I heard for the very first single from Nevermind :
of course...S.L.T.S.
Every one in the car was blown away ...
and know one knew who they were.

The sound was thick and course, and I am sorry all,
that was fresh for a long time.

Granted, I do see some replies here that I strongly agree with.
He most certainly has and will be portrayed as a Martyr..this coming from a
guy who blew his head off with a shotgun blast.

Although , the guy could play the hell out of those 3 bars man...he still lacked musicianship.
Nirvana was raw...that was the cool thing about it.So if you were into it? Cool...if not? Cool =O)

But he ,Chris and Dave are done.
Kurt is Dead , lettem rest.
If I were to give any respect to Kurt...it would be for achievment.
The band as a whole achieved what none of us will in a lifetime.
nuff said.

Think I'll go listen to some Meshuggah ...lol

Kurt Cobain wrote great songs . I don' t care if he wasn't a great guitar player. Johnny Ramone wasn't a good one and the ramones rock. I think that most of you who hate Cobain are a bunch of morons that listen to Hair metal and all that shit, and think that if a band has a song with a great solo, that 's enough for your ears. I really like punk music, Sex Pistols did not know how to play but they kick ass anyway.
