Former NIRVANA Bassist Writes Opinion Piece For SEATTLE TIMES

This past Wednesday (November 23), former NIRVANA bassist Krist Novoselic wrote an opinion piece for the Seattle Times on politics: "The fight in federal appeals court over Washington state's primary-election system is polarized around two principles. One argues for wider voter choice through a "top-two" primary, while the other pulls for the right of free association by way of a Montana-style system of partisan ballots. "These two important elements of our democratic experience — choice and free association — need not be mutually exclusive. Nor can we let this false dichotomy distract us from the challenges facing Washington elections. "Just a small modification of the top-two system would alleviate the concerns of all parties involved. The change, to a ranked-choice ballot, would remove the constitutional problems created by Initiative 872, now before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and ultimately build a quality democratic system that would invite increased participation." Why are people saying he was a horrible bassist? I didn't see the opinion piece he claimed to be a great bassist! That said, the jerk-off who said Washington State puts out horrible music has a limited amount of education. Nevermore, Queensryche, Metal Church, Jimmy Hendrix, etc are all from here.... While I do admit there are some horrible bands around here currently (Underride is good though) please get your facts straight.

A ranked-choice ballot would give more choices,obviously, than a top-two primary. I think that by removing some of the confines of the top-two style might create less of a funneling of opinions but would probably also cause stagnation in the process by leaving everyone at some different stage of approval. A top-two is usually a forced choice for some. I wonder if that could be a direct result of low voter turnout. I just thought I would sound like a complete ass and tool while I was here, mission accomplished. And yes he did suck ass at bass.

well, he's half-assing it at politics, same as if any of us would attempt to write or otherwise like he does.
regardless, he's the only member of Nirvana i could/can ever respect. i've always hated the legendary status of Kurt, and i've always thought Dave Grohl was/is horrifically overrated as well. at least he didn't make like Dave and go out and make an equally as shitty alt-rock band after Nirvana was done and make himself even more obnoxious.

It is easy to dismiss his thoughts without putting forth any ideas of your own. Why don’t you next time put forth your on ideas on the subject, rather than just criticizing him for being the bassist of Nirvana.

...aren't allowed to give their opinions concerning politics, then who is? politicians? are they the only ones? is it a law that you can only speak about things you do professionaly, for a living? if so, then only porn stars can talk about sex, musicians can only talk about music and their lyrics may only speak of the song writing process.

and by the way, nirvana has great bass lines. maybe krist didn't write them (is that even true?), but he certainly did play them... and by-golly, he certainly played them well.

If you think sales are relevant, I suggest you buy the whole MICHAEL JACKSON, BRITNEY SPEARS and CHRISTINA AGUILERA discographies. These artists have sold MUCH MORE than Nirvana so they must be better right? You fool.
The reason why Black Metal doesn't sell is that it's not meant to, it's not music for the masses. And guess what I like both Black Metal AND NIRVANA. You instead are a walking clichè.

He is an intelligent man with interesting opinions. He's has obviously moved on from being the "Bassist in Nirvana" and so should everyone who is posting negatively about him. For those of you who don't live in Seattle, Krist has made supporting local music a strong passion. No, this does not mean he is supporting a certain scene or his favorite local bands. Thankfully his vision is much broader than that. He was at the forefront of several initiatives that have helped Seattle musicians. Allowing bands to post flyers on telephone polls (which were banned because of the danger to utility workers who had to service the lines) and getting the city to allow liquor to be sold at all ages shows (bu allowing a sectioned off area) and allowing under agers to attend what were previously only 21+ ages shows.
Good on Krist. I'm glad he is voicing his opinion, it's been beneficial to all of us in Seattle so far.
P.S. For the other Seattle resident who posted above me: Underride is gay. Check out Scorched Earth, Serpens Aeon, Drawn and Quartered, or Sin Dios.
