PHILIP ANSELMO: 'I Would Have Taken A Bullet' For DIMEBAG - Nov. 29, 2005
Former PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo has spoken exclusively to Revolver magazine (web site) about the death of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, Anselmo's much-rumored substance-abuse problems and the role the heavy metal media has played in PANTERA's eventual demise, among many other topics. Several excerpts from the article (published in the magazine's February 2006 issue, due to hit newsstands on December 6) follow:

Revolver: Tell me about the past year.

Anselmo: "Man, this has been the worst year of my life — it's been the worst year of many people's lives. Ever since… Ever since my guitar player was taken from me, basically."

Revolver: How much do you miss Dime?

Anselmo: "I miss him more than I can even begin to say. I think of him every single waking day — every 30 minutes, if not every five minutes.

"And… [he pauses] Trying not to get choked up here. I'm trying to compose myself. I speak with Rex [Brown, PANTERA's bass player] often. We both are dealing with it… I'm in therapy. I never had to see a psychiatrist before. I see one regularly now. They tried to put me on antidepressants, but I won't take them because I don't trust drugs at all anymore. I don't trust a fucking pill, not unless it's a vitamin.

"I feel so goddamn bad for Vince [Paul, PANTERA's drummer and Darrell's brother], because during the writing of our last record, [his and Darrell's] mother passed away… I miss Vince. I miss his sense of humor. And Dime — there was no more creative, beautiful, perfect motherfucker ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever. He could make something out of nothing — if we were in Bumfuck, Anywhere, he could find some kind of something to do that would end up being fun, you know? And not to mention his music, our music. Dimebag, Vinnie, Rex — they were the greatest, and still are the greatest, musicians I've ever played with. I will always love everybody in that band, man. We had so much chemistry together. I miss it so goddamn much. You know, it took me quite awhile, but after about six months, I watched some old videos, I listened to our records, and I was just stunned, amazed, gasping for air, because I knew that I was part of something that changed heavy metal forever. And it took all four of us.

"To lose someone like Dime, and to have his brother in such pain, it kills me. I'd give one of my fingers to fix everything somehow, go back in time, or to have been there. This is a harsh thing to say, but if I saw some stupid son of a bitch coming at my guitar player with a gun, I would have knocked his block off, you know? I would have taken a bullet for that motherfucker."

Revolver: Have you tried to contact Vince?

Anselmo: "Yes, right afterwards, and I don't blame him for his isolation. I mean, it's a stunning, stunning thing. It's nothing you can just put out of your mind, it's nothing you can drink away, it's nothing you can go to a psychiatrist for a couple of months and he can put everything into perspective. I fear the worst for him, because I love him so much, you know? All I have in my heart is love, and when I say this, there's no way I can leave the fans out.

"We, PANTERA, had the greatest, the most intense, dedicated fans I've ever seen in my goddamn life. And I really hope with all my heart that one day, people — especially our fans and my friends — can see clearly enough to think for themselves and really realize that I have nothing but love for them. I've just been going through personal hell since December. Once again, it's very hard to talk about, man. You know, my heart is in a thousand pieces a day.

"But there is something very, very, very important that I've been wanting to say for a long time… and the only reason I couldn't say it before was because I always wanted that air of 'a new level of confidence and power' — you know, that 'vulgar display of power.' When I was in my middle twenties, I could walk through walls. There wasn't a man big enough to kick my fucking ass. I'd rock with anyone, and I don't remember losing a fight.

"And then I tried a drug called heroin, because deep inside of myself I thought — I knew — there was no way that any drug could conquer me. No way. But the second time I did it in my entire life, it killed me.

"Then I rebounded from that, played a show the very next night, knew that there's no way I'm messing with that garbage anymore. But I could tell something was screwed up with my back, something was not right. Pain, severe pain. So in between tours, I had an MRI, my first of six. Sure enough, the lowest lumbar disc in my back was ruptured — shattered from being onstage since I was 14 years old, jumping off the stage, off Vinnie's drum set, going as crazy as possible.

"So I asked my doctor, 'What can I do about this?' And he says, 'Well, you're going to have to wear a back brace,' which I've been wearing for 10 years now. [Anselmo pulls up his shirt to reveal a large back brace around his midsection.]

Revolver: Damn.

Anselmo: "Nobody's known that. Anybody who ever thought I had a beer gut or I was fat, I was holding my bones together. Then, after two, three more tours — another MRI. I got another damaged disc, and no cartilage between the bottom one and the next one, which meant bone-on-bone scraping and nerve damage, and so the painkillers got stronger, stronger, stronger just to get up on that goddamn stage and do what I do, man. I mean, I was born to do this and I've known it since I was 6 years old.

"Back in the Nineties, I went to see so many goddamn surgeons, and they all wanted to slice me open from the belly, take pieces of my hipbone out, take all my guts out, lay them on a table, and then fuse the discs from the front, use pieces of my hip to fill gaps in the bone and cartilage, then put all my guts back in, sew me up. I asked the doctor, 'Well, what's the recovery time for something like that?' And he's like, 'Oh, 10 months to a year, maybe a year and a half.' I'm like, 'No way. I gotta work, bro. We're going to Europe. We're doing Ozzfest. I cannot take a year off.' And then, on top of that, I had doctors ask me if I had been fitted for a wheelchair. That's how bad it was. And I never have let that out of the bag before. I said, 'A wheelchair?! I still jump off the damn drum riser, man.' And they're like, 'You're just going to screw yourself up.'

"And so eventually, I got put on the heaviest painkiller known to mankind — it's called methadone. Most people relate methadone to heroin, but I saved every bottle, every document — everything was for my back. And you know, it still hurt to be up there on stage, and when I woke up in the morning, it felt like an ice pick was shoved in my lower back, and the colder it got, the worse it got. And when you'd go to Europe in the middle of winter, it's like, man, I cannot do this without medicine.

"So I think people, especially journalists, took it upon themselves — and I really can't blame them, because I've never spilled these particular beans before. But I was slurring my words, I didn't have that glow anymore. It was killing my soul. You know, drugs, dope, everything you ever hear about them, it's true, man.

"So now, here we are in 2005 — medical science and neurology have come a very extreme distance. I have found an incredible doctor. He has put me through rigorous tests. They've given me my sixth MRI and nuclear testing where they make all your bones glow. [Laughs] And the worst of all was the last one. It's called the discogram — they allow no medication, no relaxants at all, and the whole purpose of the procedure is to duplicate the pain that you feel.

"So, at that point in time, I was slowly coming off this poison called methodone, which ruined my life, and another pill, which anybody who takes it is out of their mind. It's [a muscle relaxant] called Soma. That's what makes you sound like you're on the biggest amount of dope in the world — it makes you retarded, and I hated it. And so I want to apologize to all of my fans. I just wanted to play for you guys, man. And I think an apology is due for all my close friends and family, who had to endure what they didn't understand. And Dimebag, Vinnie Paul, Rex — they didn't understand the pain I was going through and the medicines and all of that. I apologize — so much. I'm not making excuses, but living with chronic pain makes you antisocial, depressed, not yourself. It changes your life, and it did mine, and now I want it back.

"And so, next month, on November the eighth [pushed back to Nov. 21 after this interview was conducted — Ed.], I'm going under the knife, and I'm getting this motherfucker fixed finally, and I will walk through walls again, and I will punch through bricks, and I will rise again. Mark my goddamn words."

Revolver: When you do tour again, are you worried at all that some crazy will try to take you out?

Anselmo: "There ain't no way I'm playing a show unless the security's tight and everybody knows the score, man."

Revolver: But as you know, some people really hate you…

Anselmo: "Man, look, there is no way anyone in this world can vicariously live through that tragedy and blame anyone but the kid who shot my guitar player, for God's sake. So many people don't even know me, and they have formed an opinion. I would suggest to every person that reads this, before you judge anyone else, make sure and check yourself out first. Because imperfection is just a human way, man. And opinions are like assholes — everybody has one. And when you assume something, yes, the ass comes out in you. Don't believe every fucking thing that you read, especially these goddamn tabloid magazines, like Kerrang! and Metal Hammer, for all the tasteless bullshit that they pulled."

Revolver: So what did those magazines pull? And how big a role did it play in things going so wrong with PANTERA in the end?

Anselmo: "You know, after the SLAYER/MORBID ANGEL tour [in 2001] that we did, I thought it was wisest to take a break. I wanted to get the second DOWN album done, and I wanted to release the SUPERJOINT [RITUAL] album, because both of them had been on ice for so long. Never did I think that before interviews would even start, I'd have guys come in and tell me how much Darrell and Vince hated my guts. Or I would say something in jest, or I would say something that would be taken so completely out of context, like, I would kick Dimebag Darrell's ass or something like that." [see previous BLABBERMOUTH.NET story]

"Look, man, the world knows that I probably wouldn't be the easiest guy to fight, but I would never raise a hand to Dimebag Darrell. That would be like raising a hand to my own family, and it would never happen. Ever. No way.

"And goddamn, man, I would never quit PANTERA. Are you crazy? I mean, that was my home. That was my real band, you know? And now, yeah, I'm starting from scratch, and all I know how to do is play music. That's all I know how to do. But if there's any silver lining within all these clouds, it's that our music does live forever within our records. That is immortal. As is the strength of our fans and the faith that I have in our fans to realize that Dime's murder was the action of a psychotic motherfucker who believed in the media too much and fell into this hype thing. Our fans are hardcore, and it kills them, what happened, but it's not going to do any good to take sides, because there is only one side, you know?

"So goddamn the effects of drugs, goddamn the fucking media personnel who toy with words and don't expect consequences. And goddamn anyone who thinks that I had anything but love for Dimebag Darrell. A part of me, a gigantic part of me, is destroyed, and I am a different man."

Philip Anselmo's entire interview with Revolver can be found in the magazine's February 2006 issue, due to hit newsstands on December 6.

I know people hate Phil and will probably still post a bunch of bad shit about him after reading this, but I think he's been making an honest effort to change his actions and image in the press since Dime died. I'm sure at some level he's an arrogant asshole, but as a fan who only knows him from his music and interviews, he seems like a good guy. Pantera will live on forever and i think that interviews like this are the best/only thing Phil can do right now until his back is healed.

Definately sounds like he needs to get his shit in order, but wow man, a back brace! I never realized he was in such bad shape, but i'll say it again, it explains alot. I kinda feel sorry for the dude he's allways taken himself so seriously, allways had a God complex. Hopefully him and Vince can stitch the shit up but wow, what a great interview. Admitting his dope problem, but it was all just crazy painkillers. anyone know if he got in alot of fights? I have heard rumors but never known if it was just him spouting off.

Back brace blah blah, he's trying to fall back on this story as the reason why he did all drugs, shittalked Dime and Pantera, and basically killed Dimebag himself. He should have known how powerful the media was before he started shittalking. Now he's acting like his eyes are open...and they are...staring at the job section of the newspaper, because he was a co-president of a huge entity which he single-handedly drove into the ground. He used Pantera money to finance Superjoint and Down, both of whom released forgettable albums after he spent sooo much time with them, instead of realizing that he hit the jackpot and just keep churning out albums. In the 80's, metal bands knew what they were doing even if they weren't making that much money: Try to make as big a footprint, no matter the odds, using all the precious time we have. Of course many bands succumbed to drugs but the quality bands I can think of just pounded them out, and them only. Not taking breaks for shit side projects. Phil, time goes fast doesn't it? Rude awakening in 2005, Dime killer.

Theres times in anyones life that you lose touch of who you are out of pure circumstance. Be it driven in trying to be successful or what means you take to achieve that success, the toll at times kills a part of you yet you still think its worth it untill something happens to someone or something that matters most of all, more than your achievements, pulls the rug out from under you and you realized you are alienated from who you really are,and you dont have clue one of where it went and how to get it back because you took it for granted for so long which kills you even more.

If someone says "thats part of growing up" fuck them and their self righteousness. It isn't! Its the world we live in that forces us to resort to such things.

I pretty much agree with ChopShop777. I mean, I really want to believe the guy but this whole statement sounds like it was put together by a publicist, not off the top of his head. I'm not saying he doesn't genuinely feel bad, but the way this is worded is really trying to overcompensate for things that Phil obviously said and can't run away from, no matter how hard he tries.

And besides...something I don't get is why Phil felt it was so necessary to keep his brace and painkillers from everyone, including his own band members. Maybe you could say he wanted to maintain his invincible image, but how is that worse than everyone thinking out loud that you're on heroin? I mean, if someone accused me of being on heroin and I could prove that wasn't the case, I would probably try to do so. Not just give a simple "no" and not even explain to your interviewee why you're falling asleep during their questions. I'm not saying he wasn't on painkillers, just that its very convenient to come out with this now and blame all your behavior on it...after waiting a year to say anything.

Look man, I know you mean well and you said some things while trying to sound like a badass that's coming back to haunt you. But until you can admit you put your foot in your mouth and never got the chance to take it out before you lost your friend, its going to be hard for your fans to forgive your behavior and words.

All that said, a psychotic trained to systematically murder is solely responsible for what happened in December. But Phil's solely responsible for everything he said in concert and in interviews. You've gotta admit that before you're going to come to terms with this.

We don't know what happened in pantera. Anyone with a little bit of sense must know how hard it is to get along with eachother these long times( on the road, in a bus), especially when you have a couple of loudmouths in the band. And when you have success, it is very hard to NOT to think you're a god. Every great band has had drug problems ... I really don't care what phil has done during the pantera time. I will remeber them for what they achieved. It has to be hard for him. Keep up m*f*r.

Translation of every Exhorder-related post in a Pantera thread:

"Look at me, I'm so cool! I'm going to claim that Pantera stole a much more underground band's sound and became popular, and that will earn me street cred! Gosh, guys, aren't I so fucking cool? Still to this day, your posts remain superb.

Something that I can't help but notice about Phil...it all, somehow, is all about him. Everything. He starts talking about Dime', and then it comes right back around to Phil himself, yet again. He talks about HIS problem, HIS views, and HIS feelings. I have YET to see a Philip Anselmo interview where he shows even the most remote bit of empathy. Regret? Yes. Sympathy? Yup. Empathy, no.

Yeah I know, the interviewer was asking Phil how he was doing. And Phil has another reason for his assholish behavior..."it was the pain", then "it was the drugs, and I did it all for you guys". It's always an outside sourse, and an honorable reason for everything Phil does wrong, and he still takes no responsibility for his words. I'm waiting for the day he finds Jesus Christ and professes it to the world, because then Phil can put all the responsibility for his actions on a higher power then, and take no blame for anything negative that may come of it.

I have to question anyone who becomes a "changed man", while still sounding like the same self-righteous prick he's been since day one. I'll wait to see proof, because his words don't mean shit to me at this point.

Its all Heartfelt and I've been waiting for something like this for a while and I am glad. It really sounds like he needed to get some shit out of his system. Which he has.

If you guys keep letting The media hype and Tv..Shit come in the way of music you really will lose out on some great metal.

Man, its been awhile. That interview explains alot. Being on methadone turns you into a fucking zombie. No matter what he says there will still be some shitheads picking at him. "Why didnt he just tell his bandmembers he was on drugs?" Thats bullshit. I have know a few addict in my days and that shit makes you a completely different person. They will do anything to hide their addiction. But I dont blame people like that. It alters their minds in ways you cant imagine and makes them do things they would never even think about doing. And once they are sober they are like "I cant believe I would do something stupid like that." and feel very ashamed about their actions. Say what you want but Phil is one of the greatest frontmen of all time and none of you can change that with all the shit you all talk. I truly miss Pantera with all the crap thats out these days. Metal really needed a band like them to put everyone in their place. I dont care how hardcore you think you are. Pantera wrote great music that will live on forever unlike the stupid hardcore/ death metal/ black metal crap most of you praise. Dont get me wrong I like some of that music but it is just not all that credible. Its all just douche bags trying to live up to some stupid ass scene and be more hard than the next person. Pantera was just 4 dudes that wrote the music they loved and it turned out to be some of the greatest metal songs (emphasis on the word SONGS) of Ill time. I will truly miss them. At least I still have their albums to jam out with till the end of time. I will always be waiting for that new Pantera record. Too bad it will never come about. But everytime me and my friends are drinking and jamming out on some fucking Pantera we always give a toast to Dimebag and Pantera and those our the moments in life when I feel like everything is alright and I have nothing to worry about. The only way Phil can make up for the fact that he was, and maybe still is, on the verge of being in a wheelchair is to come off as being arrogant as hell and ready to "walk through walls" again; it is only human nature to react that way in the face of such odds. Besides his determination to get out there and kick ass again in light of his surgery, he has, to a point, the right to be arrogant because Vulgar Display of Power, and to a lesser extent Far Beyond Driven, changed the face of metal forever. When I first heard Vulgar I was blown away; it was like nothing I've ever heard before. I do wish him well with his recovery, but (in this instance) it seems he used Dime's death to play on our emotions, which he knows (because he is an intelligent guy) will soften us for the "I'm addicted, and I still will kick ass" routine. It's called pathos.

I wished that he would have told the story on his back and his drug use in another interview at another time, though. When you combine the two subjects, it has the tendency to make it seem like he is trying to blame his prior behavior on his back problems and the drugs. I'm sure it probably played a big role and everything but it's something he should have been talking about and dealing with a long time ago. I don't understand why he felt the need to bottle that up this whole time. Having back problems isn't smething to be embarrassed about or that you should feel the need to hide. Bringing it all out here had the effect of taking an interview which was supposed to be about his former bandmate and making it all about himself and excuses. If that was his intention then shame on him. If it was something he just really needed to get off his chest then that's different, but it seems like he just picked the wrong time to bring it up. I'll say this, though. It would definitely explain why he's semed "out of it" for the past 5 years or so. I've seen him perform a lot since 2000, and it always seems like a different Phil that was up there every time. I admire that he's willing to put himself through the pain for his fans but man, you have to take care of yourself first.

Man I want to believe Phil so much. He's one of my inspirations everytime I sing a tune. But I have a video of a Superjoint Ritual performance where he says that they are the best band he has ever been in. Maybe it was the drugs that caused him to say that but man you still fucking said it. I wish he would have said all this when Dime was still alive then he might actually be here today. Its great to hear that he is getting his shit together. I just hope it is soon enough that he can crank out a few more albums.

"Thank GOD for methadone" - Phil Anselmo - DOWN H.O.B. Chicago .mp3.

"Nodferatu's Lair" -Name DOWN members gave him while recording album

I remember seeing and hearing interviews of him almost passing out while talking. I remember watching old PanterA home videos and seeing a completely different person talking to the media. He was excited about PanterA and music and had the same energy level as Dime. It is very, very, very disappointing to hear that he would sacrifice his health for music.
I have degenerative disk disease and this shit is no joke. There have been times when I couldn't walk or get in/out of my car. To hear the shit that he has makes me fucking cringe. I remember taking 5 Vicodin ES a day for a couple of weeks until I could get my physical rehab in order.
I feel for the dude...hopefully, if anything, we can hear a change in music from him. Maybe not so down in the dumps shit. You can really tell when the music hit a turn.
One thing that I don't get is that if he was so close to these guys, even the DOWN guys, how couldn't any of them know what he was going through. In fact, i thought that I read places of DOWN members saying how messed his back was. Why wouldn't Rex step in and intervine and let the brothers know what was going on? Oh well, I guess you can only lead a horse to water....

Phil is the best front of any rock/metal band I have ever seen. Pantera owned the 90's and were the best metal band of their time. I have seen them over 20 times and they always had an unbelievable chemistry and were as tight and solid of a band I have ever witnessed. Bottom line, Dimebag is gone but never forgotten. You know they would be in the process of writing a new record by now and it is so unfortunate because metal needs another Pantera and it is not going on right now, even though there are some amazing bands tearing it up out there but Pantera owned, period. "Vulgar Display of Power" still my favorite album of all-time and the number 1 reason I ever got into metal in the first place (and Biohazard). I hope Phil recovers quickly and I am looking forward to another Superjoint Ritual/Down album and any other bands he is involved with. Put the past behind with all of the jargon you read and hear about, Phil is the man. Peace.

I just wanted to respond to the comment left by MIKERULE and to all the other people that like to talk shit about Phil. O.K I agree that Phil was responsible for Pantera's demise, but for people to say that he killed Dime is just fuckin' wrong and totally ignorant. Who the hell could've predicted that some maniac was gonna kill Dime? Whatever went down between Phil, Dime, and Vinnie is between them. No one else really knows what went down but them. I do agree with Phil on one thing that magazines like Metal Hammer and Kerrang did play a part in Pantera's demise, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't responsible. All I'm saying is I just don't like the way people have been coming down on Phil; its kind of unfair. I still love every thing he's put out from Pantera to Superjoint Ritual to Down. 'fortunately' people die all the time. If they didn't, the world would be a desperately over crowded place. Weather it be murder or natural causes, death is a part of life, and everything dies. It's not a big deal.

Was Dime's death a tragedy? That is relative. I would go down the streets in my town and ask about how his death effected people, and probably a good 90% would say it didn't, or that they didn't even know about it.

We are all going bye bye... not just us as individuals, the whole human race and eventually the universe... so get use to it. We are all going to be dead a LOT longer than we are alive.

I REALLY want to believe him, that he really means this.
I will look at this a little differently from now on. But the problem is, being as dedicated a fan of Pantera I was during their years disbanded, he said SO much vile shit.
I followed all the stuff closely. And Vinnie and Dime were not saying anywhere near the bile laced comments Phil made. Those boys just wanted Pantera back, and were just regarding Phil as a lost brother and Phil was touring with SJR flinging piss & hate at them. And FOR WHAT!? I dont forget that "I can beat up dime " comment bullshit phil made. What a lowlife thing to say.

Truthfully, I think when VINNIE and REX start talking, we can decide Phil's crediblity with some of this to back it up or see what was really happening.
I think that this wont be over till Vinnie and Rex fill in the holes of these phil statements.

Either way it's just so fucking sad, so fucking wrong. We ALL got really robbed that day Dime died. I'm always gonna miss Dime. And we are coming up on the dark aniversary.

ok was phil responsible for dime's death. kinda. but that's like saying henry ford was responsible for dale earnhardt's death for inventing the modern automobile. yeah, if phil was still with pantera, and pantera was tourning, not damageplan, they would have been in a bigger venue, with bigger, better security, and instead, we'd be talking about some nut that shot a bunch of kids and security guards in ohio.

as far as phil goes, the fact that he's seeing a shrink is amazing to me. i almost fell out of my chair reading that. that's really gonna help him, because he had a lot of "me" work to do before this ever happened. i can only imagine what he's going through after everything. after what happened, directly after what he said. that's one of those things that noone should have to walk around with. do i feel sorry for him? no. i can only try to empathize with him. the drawback to having free will is that when you decide to talk, you and you alone are solely responsible for what comes out. that's a responsibility we accept as adults- we are responsible for what we say, and it may greatly effect our lives one way or another. here's your example.

although him seeing a shrink is monumental as far as i'm concerned, i still can't forgive him for breaking up pantera. i do blame him. love him or hate him, it's his Goddamn fault pantera broke up. but i'm glad to see he's at least taking steps to put his life back together.

Contrary to popular belief, Phil did not travel on the same tour bus as the band since the VDOP tour..

The "media broke us up" argument is lame. Every show I witnessed during his "hiatus" he was bagging on Pantera.

The Exhorder arguments are old and useless. While the sounds were similar, neither were a clone of the other. Two things Exhorder didn't have:
Dime's magic and his leads.
The ability to get along enough to keep together.

I'll refrain from my opinion of Phil's interview, just say I hope he

Pantera's music made many "tough" times in my life a bit easier to deal...whether I was releasing anger as through Phil's vocals driving down the road, or learning incredible drum patterns or wailing air guitar solos while drunk on Friday nights...Pantera (ever song / LP released from 1990 on) was perfect for that for me and my group of friends. I know we're not alone. My 16 year old son and his friends are the same way with Pantera's music -it literally will last many generations to come.
I honestly believe Phil's stage personna had a lot to do with what he said during SJR and Down shows, and let's face it - he did the same to many bands while with Pantera - Dime and Vin most likely knew it. Too bad Pantera split - but they released more good music than almost any band I can think of (Maybe Slayer).
Hope the surgery went well. Hopefully someday the 3 surviving members find peace with each other and I also hope they realize the VERY significant impact they had on MANY people through their music. Many people I know - including myself - lived through Pantera.

Also, according to this, he only did heroin twice in his life and never had a drug or alcohol problem. What about all of those needle references?

I get the feeling he's kind of "Clintonizing" - not lying, but not volunteering information at the same time. According to this, he never did a line or shot anything during Down II, never went onstage admitting to being drunk/'more wasted than you ever could beyeyeyeyeah', and never said terrible things about Vinnie and Dime, and never bagged on Pantera from the stage with his other bands.

This was a good start at least...I hope this is the start of a long rebound for him

Seriously, ever hear of giving a guy a second chance? He didn't "kill dime". Lots of people talk a lot (notice, two words) of shit, and very rarely does that shit talk indirectly result in murder. Sure, he talked a lot of smack, but what the hell do you expect the guy to say? "I am in Superjoint Ritual now, and it is a band that is average at best, Pantera Rules!". For whatever reason, they had a falling out, but that doesn't mean the guy isn't sincere when he talks about how shitty he feels. The fact is, the only guy responsible for killing Dime was Nathan Gale. Period. Not Phil, not metal media, not gun manufacturers, the mob or drug dealers, NATHAN GALE. What he's doing now will probably ultimately save his life. A fucked up back, and the drugs associated with it really can change a person into something they don't like. It can make you very angry, on a regular basis, with no idea it's even happening.

Good luck Phil. I hope it all works out for you. Hopefully Vinnie will come around eventually. I can't speak for everyone, but I certainly don't blame you for what happened to Dime. I'm not one to get involved with personal feuds and shit, you know let the dogs go at it and shit... However, I can't defend Phil for his comments, in this situation no second chance, no forgiveness! All the guys in Pantera started something huge, hell I'd go as far as saying that they were the metal equivalent to the Beatles for the shear size and following they had... and Phil for some reason was terrified of Pantera becoming a household name (to late by the way)! Ok fair enough Phil wanted a more underground band while Dime and Vinnie embraced the mainstream, but that doesn't mean you walk away from your 'family' as he put it. Anyone with a brain knows that whatever you say to the press will be distorted and twisted... but Phil, you didn't just say that shit in the press! I seem to remember a review of Ozzfest '04 and a certain band called Superjoint Ritual came on... and all the lead singer could come out with was 'Pantera's dead'... 'This Band is the best fuckin' band I've ever been in'. I also seem to remember quite a few of the crowd brandishing Pantera flags/shirt/merch which in turn left shortly after the set started!
In the media war of words... Dime's this, Vinnie's that... Phil's an asshole... Not once did Dime or Vinnie single Phil with any violent outburst/threats... I've still got the magazine with Phil's last interview and each time I read it, it makes me realise that Phil, with his words twisted by the press or not, had something personal against Dime, and of which I believe had fuelled the twisted psychos daydream to take out Dime! Well in 8 days time, it will be the first anniversary of Dime's murder... 1 year on and like so many other metal fans I'm still raw from the loss!

Fuck you Phil, you've had your day and now it's time to disappear like you said you would!

Phil was right, everyone does have an opinion. But Jesus Christ open your fucking eyes people!! I'm not saying that Phil didn't have problems, but who am I to say that? Who is anyone to say that? Everyone is so ready to judge people that they lose sight of reality. The only way we know Phil, is through the media, and you can't truley know someone like that.
