DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND To Tour U.S. With OPETH?

DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND are in talks to possibly open for OPETH on their upcoming U.S. headlining tour beginning in February 2006. No further details are currently available.
DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND recently completed work on their new studio album, "Synchestra", tentatively due in the spring. The making of the album "was a very enjoyable experience for Devin," according to a recent Hevy Devy newsletter. "He worked on this project stress-free and he did practically everything from song writing to mastering and engineering. There are 13 songs on this record, with five or six 'big' songs. 'Synchestra' is a very refreshing change from the rest of the Devin Townsend catalogue. The style will remind you some previous works like TERRIA or OCEAN MACHINE. Steve Vai will play a guitar solo on the song 'Triumph' and it's an honor for Devin to have Steve involved on a project like 'Synchestra'."
In other news, Devin has been working on a new instrumental project named HUMMER. "He started this project after the 'Alien' mayhem when he had troubles to relax and sleep," the newsletter reads. "It is music to make you feel asleep and keep you asleep. Devin intends to finish HUMMER while he is on tour with STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and we plan to release it as mail order only (like 'Devlab', 'Ass-Sordid Demos') for early 2006."
As previously reported, a possibility exists that Devin will produce the next album from the legendary GWAR. "Nothing is confirmed yet but he is delighted about the possibility to get involved in this project," according to the newsletter. "He will also produce these two bands named SAVANNAH and REFLUX."

Just because of you guys I went out and gave Opeth a shot. I have bagged on them in the past admittedly without even hearing them. I bought Blackwater Park last monday and have listened to it at least once if not twice a day ever since. Musically I can see something to like and the vocals while cookiemonsterish at times arent to the point of ridiculousness. I dont hate the band but the way some of you carry on youd think this was the 2nd coming of sabbath. I appreciste the acoustic guitar and the obvious attention to musicianship I would give blackwater park a 6.5 out of 10. Do they have any better albums?

Check out Morningrise. This album has some of the best acoustic work they've done. Their ability to transition between the soft and heavy parts wasn't quite yet developed, but I still think it's their best album. They've yet to reproduce the cold atmosphere that this album has. They came very close with My Arms, Your Hearse, but I think Morningrise is just a little bit better. And when Morningrise came out (1996, I believe), Mikael didn't really have the "cookiemonster" style yet. He uses a higher scream. I still say that "To Bid You Farewell" is their best song.

yes, they have quite a few better albums. Blackwater Park is probably my least favorite Opeth album. It has some great songs, but it's one of their more depressing albums. aside from Damnation, Blackwater Park is the easiest opeth album to fall asleep too. My Arms, Your Hearse is my favorite Opeth CD. it contains the most unforgettable songs. Morningrise just might rival it though.

Devin's solo stuff is quite a bit more mellow, for the most part, than Strapping Young Lad, but it still is pretty intense in a different way. It is also more melodic for the most part. His solo albums are all fairly different though. Ocean Machine and Terria, and it looks like what Synchestra will be are more epic, progressive type of things. Infinity is just an insane mix of amazing layering with some pretty melodic music. Physicist is like a mix between Devin's solo stuff and SYL, and Accelerated Evolution is fairly poppy hard rock, but don't let that throw you off, it's done in a way only Devin could do it.
This tour will be amazing if it goes through, those are two bands that I would love to see on the same bill. And for the record, it's more than just a rumor, the bands are actually talking, now it is more of a matter of it going through. I do agree though that it's pretty funny how there's the headline and then all that other info behind it just for the hell of it.

man, this is great news. Opeth is one of my fav bands ever. whoever said that line about Opeth as the 2nd sabbath... i know you meant for that to be sarcasstic, but its actually the best description of the band i've ever heard. Opeth is the 2nd sabbath.
i saw syl open for fear factory recently, fucking incredible. i purchased alien, and am now a proud fan. hanvt heard the solo stuff yet, but im real excited. this should be a great tour.
oh, and dude, Opeth said they would be coming back to dallas in feb. at their last show. fuck yeah!

as far as I'm concerned. ni would say they are definately trying to a find a more progressive route through the intricate maze of shit that is scando/black metal. They're the best I've heard as far as my limited library of that stuff goes. Too much of it sounds the same and they stand out so thats good I suppose.

Opeth should open for Devin, NOT the other way around. Even though I like both bands, I hope this isn't true, because I'd much rather see a full DTB set. While I listen to Opeth, I don't really care if I ever see 'em live for some reason...I guess because I just put on an album by them when I'm in the mood for that sort of music, but I don't know every song or anything.
Still, for all my bitching, this is a show I would definitely get tix to if it happened.
And I hope that Devy DOES produce the next Gwar album...that's really a great fucking idea...if there's anyone who will know how to perfectly package insane comedy with heavy music, Devin will.

Feces Feast- As far as touring the US with good bands - I just saw them in NYC with Nevermore and Into Eternity and it was pretty fucking good.
Anyone who hasnt seen Opeth live should def check them out. They play perfectly and its nice to see bands that dont take themselves to seriously and joke around a little. It was a great time.

I would hardly use the term overated to describe this band, they have hardly crossed over and are selling major units and on the cover of every magazine. I would agree with you about Killswitch being overated, but you cannot lump those two bands together. Its apples and oranges. SYL does kick major ass but they arent the ones playing with Opeth.

My personal music preferance dictates my CD purchases. Opeth CD's are among those purchases because I like there music. The fact is this, their music is over rated. That should be quite obvious in the fact that Ghost Reveries was no where near a 10/10. It was good, but not perfect. There were alot of really shitty passeges on that cd.
As far as being talented, Opeth again are over-rated. By who you ask? -by you, you dumb fuck.

I really do feel that you have a blurred vision of both, what over-rated means, and what true talent sounds like.

Go read this again. Yes, Devin Townsend is in SYL. The article is about the Devin Townsend Band. SYL's percieved superiority to Opeth has nothing to do with the DTB touring with them. I personally would love to see the DTB tour with Opeth, let's hope this is some valid news, it would really suck if it was just a huge rumour !
I think both bands are awesome and for some weird reason I think the two bands would compliment eachother very well. They are two completely different styles but both have lot's of atmosphere and are progressive.
Bring this tour on, I'll be front row center ! This could easily be one of the best tours in 2006 IMO.

hopefully Jaxx can book Opeth a second time.
Its happened quite a few times in the past.
This is very possible and I'm liking the chances of this actually seeing this show!
