As previously reported, MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine announced at the conclusion of the band's headlining performance in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 9 that the group's current lineup — which includes bassist James MacDonough, drummer Shawn Drover (EIDOLON) and guitarist Glen Drover (EIDOLON) — will continue to record and tour under the name MEGADETH.
MEGADETH recently completed a South American tour in support of "The System Has Failed", which came out in September 2004. The latest MEGADETH release, "Greatest Hits: Back to the Start" (Capitol), entered the Billboard chart at No. 65.

Can't wait for Gigantour '06 and the new CD!
Also BASHERS, these are US Soundscan figures and do not represent worldwide sales, site sales or sales pre-Soundscan. You can probably triple (x3) all these figures and that's more realistic of the total sold.

I'm surprised that RIP hasn't sold more here in the States. Look when CTE came out, and they got video/radio exposure. Look at the increase in sales. I bet a lot of people bought CTE soley on hearing Symphony of Destruction.

Rust in Peace's sales numbers are not tragic when you understand the system here. If you read correctly you'll see that Soundscan numbers don't count any sales before May 1991. That album was for sale for months prior to that and it sold really well, so the actual sales numbers I'm thinking should be well over a million, probably closer to a million and a half. That's not so tragic, really.
Well tragic when compared to how many numerous piece-of-shit mainstream albums far outsell it, but still....
Said it once and I'll say again, I hate when they post these numbers to the public because they don't understand how the system works. There's a reason why Soundscan numbers and charts are sent to industry insider's only.

Dave Mustaine is a douchebag and should get his head out of his ass, though. Kerry King should drop him one of these days.

My favorite Megadeth is pre-Marty Megadeth. (I know I will get bashed for that.) Before Marty came in they were a lot angrier and more evil sounding. My 2 favorite Megadeths are Peace Sells and So Far So Good So What. There is something wrong with Dave for say So Far.... is there least best album next to Risk. That is crap. So Far... is their heaviest album by far. Its a flawless album. That and Peace Sells are perfect examples of 80s thrash. I do like Rust In Peace alot too. Just not as much as the other 2 i mentioned.

"Rust In Peace was a complex and technical thrash metal album filled with great guitar solos. Not exactly something I would expect to sell when Motley Crue were still popular and Nirvana taking over."
I don't need an explanation of what kind of record R.I.P. was/is - I bought it the first day that it came out. Metal was doing just fine in 1990. Cowboys From Hell came out after R.I.P., too. Nobody even heard of Nirvana in 1990.
Still, what would make you think that Cryptic whatever and the other bad joke (Risk) would outsell one of the greatest metal albums of all time?
Just admit it, you're 15.

Well, he's not the greatest...that's for sure. He plays pretty killer rhythms and writes great riffs and songs (used to), but his leads always sucked balls. That's why he had Poland and Friedman. I think that Mustaine's best lead is to 'Wake Up Dead'. It's actually pretty tough to play, too. Other than that, except maybe one or two others, his solos sound like dying cats.

This is almost as bad as rating seekers or readers polls. . . Hollywood evangelists. It's a scheme. A plot. A stock quote. Just add Starch. It's not about the music. It's about how much property you have. And how much much more land you'll need to set them free.

Hetfield and Hammett may not be better than Poland and Friedman. But they are way better than Mustaine. Like said above, other than a few solos, Daves solos are a sloppy mess. Just alternate picking out the ass. Have you seen then Cliff Em All dvd? Kirk Hammett was a huge improvement over Mustaine. He has way more dynamic in his lead than Mustaine. Mustaine was sloppy as fuck back in the day and he still kinda is on lead. But ignorant metal fans will talk about him like hes fucking Yngwie just becasue of the stupid Metallica/Megadeth feud. I love Megadeth but the truth is Metallica wrote the better songs. Megadeth had the better lead guitarists. Period.

It's sad when people either don't read, are too young or too dumb to understand things. Soundscan = U.S. sales only, after May 1991. Rust In Peace came out in late 1990 and its biggest sales period like most albums was on initial release. The album has moved over a million.
RIAA "Platinum" figures are deceiving. They merely mean that the distributor shipped over a million copies of the album, not sold. Half those copies could be sitting on the shelf somewhere in a bargain bin. SoundScan was established to counterbalance that method in determining actual album sales. It is a combination of the two that determines Billboard chart position and sales figures.
Hetfield and Hammett are what? Perhaps Hammett is an excellent guitarist, but I have never heard actual recorded evidence of this, especially when compared to Hetfield/Friedman's monster riffs. Hell, Hammett had very little to do with the writing on Metallica's best records, their first four albums.
To those who are too young to understand, Nirvana and grunge did not emerge until mid-1991 when a female mTV programmer who was enthralled with the band decided to put their tongue-in-cheek song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" into heavy rotation. This became a turning point in musical history and the first real example of modern media directly changing the face of music by force. Why did Countdown to Extinction sell so well? Well, at the time mTV had not yet alienated or fired just about of its 1980's staffers and had not decided to blacklist Metal as a genre. CTE had three top ten hits on mTV and even received airplay on Pop/Hits stations like Z100 in NYC. Youthanasia, besides not being as coherent and well-constructed of an album (or as heavy) sold much less because mTV was trying to push the channel and popular music in the "alternative" direction. There was a legitimate hatred there against Metal and anything or anyone associated with it. Youthanasia received little airplay and no popular support, as was the case with Pantera with Great Southern Trendkill. It was by sheer fanbase support that these bands sold copies after 1994. Megadeth screwed it up of course by making the mistake of getting progressively less heavy in an attempt to remain popular. This was a mistake because mTV and by then, the industry, could care less what Megadeth sounded like, they weren't getting played. It was too late to "pull a Metallica". Not to mention that Risk was not only not heavy but also was completely nonrelevant to what was popular music. Totally out of touch.
Pantera's approach of staying heavy was much smarter, although Phil Anselmo's attempt to sound more "underground" on each album contributed to some decline in sales or fan base, because Pantera became more abstract and less accessible on each album.
Award for smartest marketing trickery of the last 10 years in music goes to Slipknot, who snuck onto mTV and radio with their circus act and shtick borrowed from mall favorites Korn, ICP and Marilyn Manson, among others. Giving the young mall/skater audience a heavier and "scarier" Korn (who had moved on from playing spooky mall rock to playing silly mallternative) was a formula for success.

I think you summed that era off music up pretty good. Everything you said was on the mark about Megadeth loosing it by getting less heavy and Slipknot being popular because of being like a circus act. I still think Hammet is a way better guitarist than Mustaine, though.

In my opinion, Mustaine is running ahead of Kirk recently. Lars should let Kirk play some solos again, so that he'll have a chance to reverse the situation. I'm sorry, but at this point it's Mustaine >>> Kirk. Sure, they are both awesome though.

Well if you count pre-1991 sales and international sales (i'd bet money that it's sold more overseas than in the US) then Megadeth sales are waaay more than 7 mil.
Hammet used to be good. Now Mustaine shits on him (^^)
