KILLING JOKE Bassist Praises New Album, Slams MÖTLEY CRÜE

KILLING JOKE will release their new album, "Hosannas from the Basements of Hell", on March 3, 2006 via Edel.
Commented bassist Paul Raven: "We recorded the album in Prague at Faust Studios and it sounds amazing, Jerry Kandiah engineered the record and we are producing ourselves these days... (no change there then). I must say that I am proud of Jaz [Coleman, singer] and Geordie [guitarist], Benny [drummer] and Reza [keyboardist] as everyone has stepped to the plate and delivered beyond expectation. We feel it is some of the best work we have ever done under the banner KILLING JOKE."

Regarding KILLING JOKE's stint as the opening band for MÖTLEY CRÜE on the U.K. leg of their tour in June 2005, Raven said, "The MÖTLEY CRÜE tour was a fucking joke and we hated it. There was problem after problem and a whole bunch of bullshit from the business end to get through that made the whole experience pretty draining all round. We overcame adversity and 'kicked ass,' as those morons would say. Always got time for [Nikki] Sixx, he's a true geezer with low end to spare, but the rest can go hang. Our crew excelled and CRÜE's stage crew were accomodating, but the headaches outweighed the fun, and as usual, that usually means destruction and chaos in return from our end, culminating in MÖTLEY's manager getting knocked out in London. Well done that, man! We drank a lot and went fucking mental non-stop, ending up in London with debts and a hangover like you wouldn't believe."

1981, first ever radio interview, already a junkie, vince appears at the radio station with a black eye and fat lip for fighting with a dealer after getting ripped off
1981 they share a house near the whiskey, surviving on generous bimbos and tommy's shoplifting skills
their first management has to fine them for repetitively missing rehearsals, showing up late or too fucked up, and insisting vince and nikki get lessons to actually learn how to play
A drunk Nikki and Vince arrive early for their show at the Whisky a Go-Go. Someone makes a distasteful remark to Nikki, so he smashes the guy's head into the bar, smashing glass and drawing blood. A bouncer walks the two band members upstairs where a girl at the bar jerks off Nikki. Upon leaving the club, Nikki finds Vince passed out under a car, so he drags him home only to find one of Tommy's female leftovers handcuffed to his bed. After passing out, Vince soon wakes up and the girl is gone from his bed, so they all head to a party at the Hyatt House. Nikki has sex in a closet with a drunk, huge-breasted girl, before inviting Tommy in on the action without her knowledge. Sixx then gets an unwilling young partygoer to join in the game as well, who loses his virginity in the process.
The Crüe steals some turkey potpies from the liquour store cater-corner to the Whisky and hang beer cans, panties, snot and hypodermic needles on a stolen tree for Christmas.

Vince Neil is arrested at The Troubadour after punching out a female patron
1983
a drunken sixx totals his porsche in to a telephone pole at 90mph in a residential neighborhood
1984
Tommy finds out that his girlfriend has posed for the current February issue of Penthouse magazine on newsstands without his knowledge, after a fan passes comment on the pictures. Tommy punches the fan unconscious with one hit
Ozzy and Vince notice keys in a car's ignition so they steal it and frighten pedestrians, before smashing its windows and ruining its upholstery.
Nikki hears that former girlfriend Lita Ford is dating Mick Cocks from the band Heaven after apparently being introduced by a local punk. Tommy and Nikki go to Lita's house and beat the punk with wooden 2x4 planks.
In Germany, Nikki and Tommy throw his beds, chairs, desk, TV and dresser out of the window on top of two brand new Mercedes Benz cars parked below
Switzerland, Sixx shot a flare gun, set hotel room on fire, potentially igniting a large blaze that could have cost the lives of hundreds, while they are being kicked out, they smash the mirrors in the hotel elevator.
Five days later, Tommy fires a flare gun in concert, permanantly disfiguring his drum tech's face from burns
Tommy punches his wife of 3 months, knocking out a tooth, and she claims causing a miscarriage
Vince totals his Pantera, Razzle dies, a 20 yo male and 18yo female are left with a permanent case of semi-paralysis
weeks later, tommy rolls his motorcycle with joey vera on the back, nearly ruining his career with armored saint
vince continues to drink, despite 2 DUIs in a year, potentially 7 years in jail, but lawyers and big corporate money bail him out
that only brings us to 1986.... too tired to go on... but you get the picture, just add another 20 years of the same kind of sick diarrhea bag behavior.

The Joke and The Crue are completely diametrically opposed to one another. Crue hasn't released anything worthwhile since Shout at the Devil. Killing Joke, on the other hand, released 3 of the most influential rock/industrial/metal albums of all time with their self-titled debut, What's THIS For...? and Fire Dances. Even the poppy Joke stuff (Brighter than a Thousand Suns and Night Time) shits all over everything Motley Crue has ever done (even though I love SatD).
Jaz and Raven should have known what they were getting themselves into touring with the Crue; a bunch of rockstar bullshit.

Take a gander at Metallica's Garage Days Re-visited. Take a careful look at the tracklisting. Now go to AMG (allmusic.com) and look at the tracklisting for Killing Joke's debut. Notice how the song THE WAIT appears on both of them. Coincidence? I think not. There's one prime example of a band that the Joke influenced. Hell, another band that has gone on record as being huge Killing Joke fans is Voivod. I guess both bands are a flash in the pan, huh?
If you want to judge a bands worth by their album sales, then go listen to some vapid, dime-a-dozen pop music. If you want to listen to some music that is ARTISTICALLY relevant, then, well, early Killing Joke is the way to go.
Oh, they had a huge influence on Swans too, but they must suck, as well, because they haven't made the billboard top 100 charts. :| Great logic. Keep it up!

(Killing Joke has a solid place in history. I doubt seriously if they were broke, but can agree they took advantage of the money part, that does disappoint me, but at least slamming crue makes sure it won't happen again.)

It's quite obvious why you are a Crue fan and don't understand or care to understand Meshuggah. They couldn't give a shit about image. I do hate the fact that The Crue has struck a chord. It's a reminder of how many mindless sheep there are in this world. People willing to follow uninspired, unoriginal shit. Motley Crue have proven themselves to be disgusting, vile pigs whereas Meshuggah (who have partied plenty) have kept their names out of the police blotter (just an example) and feel an obligation to their fans, not their fans pocketbooks. Yes, I have met Meshuggah on more than one occasion and found them to be honest, humble and congenial. Something I doubt I would find with Motley Crue.

I hear ya. There are many bands I wish had mass appeal but for one reason or another never got it. Doesn't mean I need to bash other bands because of it. Every crue show that I've seen has been a real spectacle in every sense of the word, and I enjoy it. Anyway, I'm not here to bash Meshuggah or any band, I just chimed in because i think Killing Joke was out of line. Of course, none of us know the whole story.

Crue is a love hate thing. And I've written where I stand. And will continue. I took the last one off..(the canada dates) and I wish every sneeze the crue makes didn't make headlines, there is so much pollution..
I have to work hard to be able to make music. I'll admit, there may be jealousy that the crue never had to work (and they sound like they never practice), and they suck. I'm good. I don't have to have bimbos buy me drive through food. It's a disgrace to sponge off a female, and I couldn't respect any groupie that would let a musician take advantage of her like that... actually, although I've met a few nice ones, but most groupies gross me out just because they are lowering themselves by putting the band above them. And musicians that use them piss me off. If you can't get by on your own merit, have to be in a band to get laid, you're pathetic. On the same token, I don't want a girl to like me or fuck me because I play guitar. I can hold a conversation, I can be funny, I can be fun to be with. There's way way way too many bands forming for the wrong reason... to get laid.. and crue are the best example of all time.
I think most male crue fans are groupies in their own way. They idolize the band, want to be like them, and have a sadly poor sense of self identity. What the crue has done has unfortunately been done, overdone, burned out, and done again. And it's sad the cliche lives on, with adoring aging fans trying to cling on to the 80s and recapture their youth. It's over, even though they are doing really well with this tour, I guarantee you, the nostalgia will wear off. 20 years later, all these assholes (really I do like Mick but starting to find him guilty by association) are still doing it. They will fade on their own. They won't go down like the stones or zeppelin or the who, they don't have any actual music to keep any legacy alive.
Vince's vehicular manslaughter will far outlive any song they ever wrote, even the sappy "home sweet home"...ugghh...
