DISTURBED Drummer: 'We Don't Pigeonhole Ourselves In Metal'

DISTURBED drummer Mike Wengren recently spoke to The Baltimore Sun about the group's latest album, "Ten Thousand Fists".
When "Ten Thousand Fists" appeared in September, it entered Billboard's pop album chart at No. 1 with first-week sales of 238,000. It was an impressive showing for the follow-up to DISTURBED's last album, 2002's platinum-selling "Believe". This time around, the Chicago band resists the heavy-metal tag.
"We don't pigeonhole ourselves in metal," said Wengren, 34. "We think our music is more rhythmic. There's a lot that gets attached to metal — the look, the weird vocals that really don't fit our music.
"On the first two records, we were trying to find ourselves," Wengren continued. "(On) this record, we combined the two. The first was more aggressive, and the second was more melodic. And we put those elements together on the new record."
"Ten Thousand Fists" has sold 738,000 copies in the United States so far, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The group's 2000 debut, "Sickness", has shifted 3.52 million copies.

some of you here are a bunch or idiots. dont matter if you like it or not its still one of metals many sub genres ok i dont like disturbed, but dont say 'its nu metal , its shit' at least give other stuff a chance, well i know how hard it must be i mean your mates would rpbaly beat you shitless if they thought you listend to anything less heavy than meshuggah or whatever bands you guys ass lick on here, ok i dont like much metalcore.. but some (killswitch engage, trivium etc) are well worth listening too, just as much as mesuggah and the like.

i cant believe these jokes played with the frogs. THE FROGS might be the all-time worst band to emerge out of chicago.
it was so sad seeing them at the house of blues on the sfu/danzig bill...disturbed's family was trying to fuck shit up in the pit.
im pretty sure i saw them at champs back in the day(or this other club that has since shut down) they sucked then, they suck now, and they will suck tomorrow.

It's pretty obvious just by the comments he makes about metal, that Mike really doesn't have much of a clue as to what metal has to offer, and neither does the rest of his band. Listening to Disturbed talk "metal" is akin to listening to Anna Nichole Smith discuss international politics in an interview conducted by Emo Phillips...you'd cry if you weren't so busy laughing.

you know, say what you will, but Disturbed could be a hell of a lot worse. They are by no means great, but they aren't as bad as a lot of you make them out to be.
Think of them as a gateway drug. If bands like Disturbed, Slipknot, or Korn or whomever turn kids away from the pop shit and onto metal, then so be it. If you don't like them, don't fucking listen to them. But if some kid gets turned onto Slayer or Iced Earth because they first got into Disturbed, then that's just fine by me.
Look how many people were able to be exposed to Lamb of God and Shadows Fall because Slipknot took them out on tour.

Like the guy above said, you have to respect a band that writes their own stuff and feels strongly about it. Also, being from Chicago, I've seen how hard these guys worked to be successful over the years.
That said...their music sucks my ass. Every goddamn song is the same. The lyrics are complete bullshit. And I'd like to know what all those monkey noises are about.
Fuck these guys. Listen to my band instead. At least we're metal and don't make any bullshit about it.

You missed the point. These bands are highly established through 20-30 years and Megadeth is attempting to re-establish themselves. I am saying that if they or any of the other mentioned bands released their first album today it would fail. Do you see Hammerfall or Iced Earth selling boatloads?

White Zombie - La Sexorcisto was industrial? I think not. Their later music perhaps, but La Sexorcisto was definitely classic "Heavy Metal" which was refreshing to see. Skrew and Ministry were industrial.
Fear Factory has never been purely industrial, sans some marketing shtick. They started out as a Death Metal band with an industrial edge and moved on to Power Thrash with an industrial edge (gay techno remixes notwithstanding). Obsolete and Digimortal were lighter due to FF thinking that because mTV let them play at the Beach House once (Cars? WTFITS?) that they were going to actually give them airplay. LOL silly Fear Factory. You should have known better.
Pantera would like to call themselves "Southern Heavy Metal" but that's silly and doesn't make sense except that they are Southern. Far Beyond Driven does not make me think of anything remotely "Southern". Their friends in Down and Corrosion of Conformity play Southern Rock/Metal. Pantera never released a "Sweet Home Alabama" and mostly struck me as more of a coastal band musically (N.Y./L.A.).
Dream Theater is Metal only by virtue of guitar virtuosity exceeding rock standards. Their music is well, weak like most "guitar gods" seem to release, and often somewhat silly. Same problem Malmsteen or Vai has. Neoclassical sound better to you?

disturbed is one of the very few rock bands to actually debut at #1 last year. and with their 3rd album to boot.
and Believe only went, platinum..thats bullsh#*

i like disturbed and lamb of god
godsmack and soilwork
I also like metallica before the black album and after.
I dont just listen to stuff that crams as many notes into a few minutes as possible.
Why eveything has to be so defined is stupid. To people outside of metal, Disturbed is no different then meshuggah, or opeth or whoever.
You are allowed to listen to more then one type of music. Some people actually like rhythm in music. Some people like to hear words, not just deep growling.

what is wrong with most of you people, i have read most of the comments on here and i have to narrow down 'blabbermouth' as shit site to do nothing but slag off bands.
i respect every rock, metal, death metal etc bands cos of what there creating, if you want to take your anger out on something go to some chavy r'n'b hiphop crap site and do it there.
ps: i happen to like disturbed, call me crazy, i use to even like creed, but thats not the point. my point is, you guys should be respecting other people other wise you are narrowing your self down to be nothing but another worthless chav that has nothing else to do!!!
