Ex-PANTERA Bandmates REX BROWN And VINNIE PAUL Play Together For First Time In Over Four Years
- Jan. 1, 2006
|
|
Former PANTERA bassist Rex Brown performed with ex- PANTERA/ DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul for the first time since 2001 at last night's (Dec. 31) GASOLINE gig at Hot Rods and Hoggs in Arlington, Texas. Rex joined Vinnie and the rest of the reactivated southern rock covers band for renditions of the PANTERA classics "Walk" and "Cowboys from Hell". Check out pictures at Damegeplan.net. More photos can be found at RideForDime.com. GASOLINE's lineup had previously included late PANTERA/ DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and PUMPJACK vocalist Thurber T. Mingus. GASOLINE were expected to play a set of covers by such artists as TED NUGENT, THIN LIZZY and PAT TRAVERS. Also appearing on the bill were local cover band STRANGE BREW.

Pantera never did anything good besides Cowboys from Hell. The rest was just average. But even that was written mostly by Dime and Phill. That's why they quit the band when the two couldn't get along. Vinnie and Rex are just average. I myself know a couple of dudes who can play drum and bass better than those two.

I'm going to get flamed for this and I understand why but I'm really tired of hearing about Pantera and Damageplan being praised/worshiped by a large majority of people on this board. I think what happened to Dime is terrible but Damageplan was getting its ass ripped left and right and as soon as Dime got killed, DP or PT couldnt do a thing wrong.
And my comment about Vinnys wig wasnt a a jab, its like saying Dime smoked weed and Phil has back problems. Its just the way it is. Chuck Norris wears a wig as well....

What happened to Pantera anyway? They've been on a constant downward spiral after Vulgar Display of Power, and this steaming heap of feces is what seems to be left of the band's creativity. There are a few things that I absolutely hated about this album. The first is Phil Anselmo. It may be that I'm sick of his bad-ass attitude all the fucking time, but he completely lost his delivery. What happened when he could sing? You know...Cemetary Gates, The Sleep, This Love? The man has a great talent for singing...when he decides to use it. When he doesn't, he sounds completely mindless...and that's what he sounded like though this ENTIRE album, and by the end it begins to wear very, very thin. The second thing wrong with this album is Dimebag...it sounds like he ran out of halfway decent riffs just after Trendkill and now he has to play watered-down aggro-metal "riffs". Not to mention that many of his solos on this album are pathetic. The production on this album wasn't very good either, the songs sound like they're supposed to deliver, but never do. That's alright, even if the production quality was infinitly better, it couldn't have saved this album. Another thing that bothered me a lot about this album were the lyrics. There's really nothing to them, no message...it just sounds like drivel after a while (since all the lyrics sound about the same). There is one thing good I can say about this album and that is the rhythm section was decent. Rex and Vinnie had an okay performance here and that was the only saving grace of this album. This album is weak, watered-down and cliched. The band seemed to be running out of ideas at this point. The bottom line is that Reinventing the Steel is the musical equivalent of a train wreck.

Review: Metal Magic-aka-glam posers that later turned thrash posers with Cowgirls from hell
A little piece of warning: This album-review was written 10th of December 2004, two days after Dimebag's death. My feelings were angry, and I was totally fucked up, like many others. So this review isn't just written under the influence of hate, but also a small amount of alcohol, which was taken in honor of Dimebag. The alcohol made this album more listenable.
Thought I'm sorry for Dimebag, I still try to be objective… and now to the review…
"What? Cowboys From Hell-album isn't Pantera's first album?" asks that goon who doesn't know about the band's history. Well, no… Pantera seems to be ashamed of it's past. Maybe there's a reason for it?
Some elements of the Pantera-sound are present here. Actually, there's only one feature: Dimebag's, or actually "Diamond" Darrell's guitar-playing skills. There are few more funny/stupid names: Rexx Rocker, with two x:s. Vinnie Paul hasn't changed nothing, but has anyone heard nothing about Terrence Lee after the early Pantera-albums? I certainly haven't.
Pantera hadn't released any demo-tapes before this, or they aren't just known. Diamond's and Vinnie's father owned the studio where this was recorded in, so this and the two self-produced later albums were kind of "family recordings". But still this sound crappy, apparently the budget wasn't large.
What about the music then? It's at least highly 80s-Kiss-influenced. Glam. Here are few listenable songs (thanks to the interesting guitar-riff). I personally liked the songs "Widowmaker", "Nothin' on (But the Radio)" and "Biggest Part of Me", though it's a copy from many other heavy-ballads.
Lyrically the album is challenging. Lyrics are about girls, love, parties etc… Could you except something like this from the band, whose later albums featured nice themes like hate and violence? But then again… Could you except lyrics about hate, violence and political unrest from the band named "Pantera"? The cover of this release is something, that could be expected from the "Pantera"-called band.
This is a very glam-inspired record. A nice record, if you are a die-hard fan of glam and/or Pantera.
Now I must continue drinking in honor of Dimebag…

First!
Mad Max - you're a fucking idiot and your lame-ass post proves it beyond doubt.

Next!
Jimmy "The Gent" - Nice screen name. Was Jimmy the Fucking Idiot already taken? "Vinnie and Rex are just average. I myself know a couple of dudes who can play drum and bass better than those two." No, you don't. And even if you did, exactly how many million-selling albums have those dudes put out? Thought so. Asswipe.
Next!
DaBOG - Vinnie wears a wig. Big deal. And if you're tired of reading about Pantera STOP FUCKING READING ABOUT THEM. Stool.
Next!
dimebagisgay - what is "THIS ALBUM" you keep talking about? What a fucking dumbass. Not one thing you said makes ANY sense and all you've done with your post is prove you are one STUPID fucking piece of living shit. Kill yourself and do it now.
Nobody can tear down the power that was Pantera - especially a little group of under-brained, over-puckered asshole internet malcontents.

Except a well-aimed bullet. That sort of finished it totally really...no DImebag- no Pantera/reform. Personally I never understood the passion for this band. i saw them at Donnigton once- didn't make much impact on me. Admitedly, its a pity that someone got shot, but hey, thats the way of the world. People get shot every day, and usually its the nice guys that are missed, but Im thinking that the daily wailing over the demise of this guy and the jizzing off over his abilities is getting a bit tiresome.

They were a cool band with GOOD musicians who were passionate about not only THEIR music, but good music in general, no matter who made it. I was at this new years eve party and it was very cool seeing this go down. Personally, im not into the rockstar hero worship, but Pantera were a great band whether you agree or not.

pantera started as a glam type band (no shit dumbass), but even in that genre they were stand outs. take a listen to "power metal" (phil's first with the band). I will admit the lyrics were pretty bad, but the music itself shred like no one else that played glam. They admit to being huge fans of kiss and priest, once again take a listen to Power Metal and it makes sense, musically very priest influenced and lyrically very kiss influenced. After PM, phil had more input into the band (admittingly a big exhorder fan), hence some of the change in the musical direction. ALL BANDS ARE INFLUENCED by someone before them. pantera took what exhorder had already taken, and perfected it.

You rate musicians based on how many albums they sell? Then you must love backstreet boys!! It doesn't matter how many albums Pantera sold. The fact is those two are average. You can say all you want, but everone knows this. The fact that you rate people based on album sales, and you rate vinnie and rex as high as you do, shows you know nothing about metal. So go listen to your j-lo sonny boy.

First, bringing someone else down doesn't bring you up. Just because your life hasn't amounted isn't anyone else's fault but your own. Get over it.
Second, yes Pantera has albums before CFH that they may not be proud of. Let's see, who here wants every little thing remembered from their? Are you proud of every decision you have made? Probably not, otherwise you wouldn't be so full of hate.
Third, you may not like Pantera. That's fine, it's your right as a human being. But you have to give credit where credit is due. They are one of very few bands to keep real metal alive after the alternative scene started taking over in the early 90's. Am I the only one to remember that far back?
Fourth, even if the remaining members did decide to play together at some point in time, though not any time soon, they should not call themselves Pantera or even ride on the waves of Pantera. They're talented enough to write new material. If they want to bust out a Pantera song during a show every now and then, that would be great. But once a band loses any founding or major member, then the rest of the band should retool what they are doing and continue in a different direction. What if the Beatles had gotten back together after Lennon had been shot? It would have been disrepectful to what they had done as a band. The same with Pantera. I'm sure Dime would want Vinnie and the rest to keep playing. It was always all about the music. But it would be shameful to call themselves Pantera or even ride on the music that he wrote.
Fifth. Maybe it's just me, and it probably won't happen, but wouldn't it be awesome for Vinnie and Zakk Wylde would play together. I, for one, would buy that album and go see them.

How did Dime write the drum parts? I didn't know he was a drummer! Only ignorant people think the guitarist writes the songs. This is true in a very small percentage of artists. A song is a collaboration of instruments usually. Normally, each musician writes his own part. In the case of Pantera, Vinnie definitely wrote his own music. The riff is not the song, but just that - the riff. Also, Vinnie has his drum sound patented. This is a key element to the Pantera sound. It is also something that Dime didn't contribute to. I love Dime's guitar playing, but Vinnie's drumming made it even more enjoyable.

Man...*way* too much negativity flying around...but what else is new for BM. If you don't like Pantera or the individuals from that band...move on and talk about Glenn Hughes or something.
I think it is great they all got together (Vinne, Rex, Bob and all their buddies) and had what looks like a great time on New Years Eve. I wish them all the best for 2006, whatever it is they decide to do.

you know who you are. i'm sorta newcomer here but how could pantera have been riding the coattails of metallica- black album era ? hadn't metallica completely abandoned their thrash roots at that point? and if i remember correctly, thrash metal was already on the downslide when cowboys came out? thrash was totally out of fashion by the time they put VDOP. nirvana and the seattle scene were all the rage in '92 so how was pantera jumping on the bandwagon when there wasn't one to begin with? plus phil always maintained they were more of a power-groove thing than thrash.

Typical. No, I don't rate musicians by how many albums they sell - nice try. My point is that if the clowns you mentioned were any good they'd be successful. The idea that Rex and Vince are "average" is merely your opinion - and a stupid opinion at that. Get your head out of your ass, chump.

i'm glad to hear that they played together again, that's half of PANTERA, and i have all the respect for them, PANTERA can obviously never be again, but i hope these guys do well in life
but i still don't like junkie Phil and what he did, Dime is dead because of Phil, if Phil hadn't left, there would've been no Damageplan gig out there, there would've been a PANTERA gig somewhere out there in the world, with lots more security...
:(
Dime, have a great time in heaven!

Although it is nice to see them play together again, I highly doubt anything will come of it unfortunately. As for this being water under the bridge, the water went under the bridge either before or at Dime's funeral as Rex was there. He never commented publicly, but then again, Rex was never one for that. This however is a step in the right direction if anything does happen.
