C.O.C.'s PEPPER KEENAN: Opening For DISTURBED Was 'Dumbest Thing We've Ever Done In Our Lives'

John Pegoraro of StonerRock.com conducted an interview with CORROSION OF CONFORMITY frontman Pepper Keenan in December. A few excerpts from the chat follow: StonerRock.com: Was it both your house and the bar [in New Orleans] that got fucked up [in the Hurricane Katrina aftermath]? Pepper: "The bar got looted bad. I got back in there and took care of that shit. There's no power, y'know. Imagine a city just blacked out. Done. Nighttime was fucking a whole different ballgame. Cruising around the city on a fucking bicycle with a fucking sawed off shotgun on your fucking back is a fucking trip, man. I can't explain it.' StonerRock.com: What was your take on the handling of Katrina, from the state and federal level? Pepper: "Well, in my opinion, anyone who expected the government to take care of you is a bigger fool than me. I know damn well, just from living in New Orleans, when you see a storm of that caliber, with that kind of barometric pressure, even if you're a fucking moron you know to get the fuck out of there. Anybody who didn't get the fuck out — I feel for some people, but people had options, man, lots of options to get out of there. A bus ticket to Baton Rouge is fucking $10. I got everyone I knew out. I got my handicapped grandfather, my Vietnam vet uncle, shell-shocked uncle, I got everyone out. But I left them in a hotel lobby in Baton Rouge and I snuck back in. But yeah, I never expected the government to anything right before, why would they start now? Idiots. They don't care. It's a shame; it saddens me to see that it actually happened. We always bitch about it and it always in other countries or whatever and here it is in your own backyard, it definitely hits you. It's weird." StonerRock.com: How long do you think it'll take to get things right? Pepper: "It'll never be like it was. That New Orleans as you know it is gone. It's so monumental. There's only 40,000 to 60,000 people in the city. There's half a million. So there's nobody there. It's bizarre. You can ride down streets and houses are gone. Just bulldozed, just nothing, just dust. It's a trip driving through neighborhoods, miles and miles. It looks like 50 atomic bombs went off. Literally." StonerRock.com: And your house? Pepper: "I'm alright. I live in a really old part of New Orleans. What's fucked up is most of the things that got fucked up in New Orleans were built before 1940 — mostly. The old footprint of New Orleans from the 1870s, they built on the highest ground. The water stopped about six blocks from my house. You drive, and all of a sudden you see a water line. The city looks flat and you assume it flats and you keep driving and all of a sudden it's five feet deep, six feet deep, seven, eight, nine, ten feet deep." StonerRock.com: How's it been going on [the DISTURBED] tour? Pepper: "It's fucking ridiculous. It's nothing… it's the dumbest thing we've ever done in our lives." StonerRock.com: So you put "Albatross" back into the set — last time you played "Fuel" instead. Pepper: "We're going to switch it around even more, but we just don't feel like it with the stupid crowd [at the DISTURBED shows]." StonerRock.com: Those kids actually reacting well to your stuff? Pepper: "I mean, it's over their head. The average DISTURBED fan is just a shopping mall… they're not music fanatics by any stretch of the musicians. I can't say that about everybody, but from what I've seen, they're just… Hot Topic kind of whatever. It's kind of a drag, because the standards of music get lowered by things like that. It ain't my place to say anything, but we consider ourselves to playing music of some degree. Off the cuff. We fall on our ass sometimes going on some of those jams and shit, but at least we're doing something. We're evolving somehow. If you ain't evolving, you ain't doing shit, in my opinion." I like COC, and everyone's entitled to their opinion, but the average Disturbed fan isn't necessary "mallcore". I like Disturbed, along with a lot of other bands. I'm not a HUGE Disturbed fan, but I actually think they were one of the best "modern" bands when they came out. Right now their new album is certainly better than the myriad of Metalcore that's being played incessantly. And it's better than hearing A7X's "Bat Country" for the 50,000th time. Why I was listening to the radio in the first place is a whole other topic altogether...

I like some of Disturbed's music, but Pepper has really got a point. I saw Disturbed back in Dec '02 and the show was fucking terrible. I left after the first half hour because the crowd are such drag-asses. They were only there because Disturbed are, through no fault of their own, a "radio" band and are clustered with the likes of Chevelle and Papa Roach. So yeah, Hot Topic sheep is pretty much all you're gonna get...COC needs to tour with High on Fire ASAP...that's your target audience!

Yeah, both bands clashed. I enjoy both bands, but all DISTURBED has to do is release one song and they're done, and the fans did clash.
The New Orleans discussion was very interesting. It's amazing how much media press it has lost and how that city is still in shambles. Sad sad times for the south.

I saw two nights of this tour and COC were absolutely horrible! I have enjoyed COC in the past but they currently suck ass! So Pepper, if you want to blame the Disturbed crowd instead of owning up to the fact that you are another band that has stuck around a few years too many, go ahead.

Pepper shouldn't have even geared up for this tour. I was going to go to both nights at the avalon in boston but then as it got closer i couldn't even bring myself to go. Woulda been almost 50 bucks for a ticket to see c.o.c. open up and get dick for time and then leave because i'm not much of a disturbed fan.

you know Pepper as much as I dig COC and Down lets face it this tour was for your band to break out of the 300 people a night clubs and get stuck before a wider audience. If you guys had a better attitude and got up there every night the intent to prove yourselves and give them the COC show you are capable of instead of this half assed version of a live show I have heard about from numerous people who went to this show. I dig Disturbed because they are just a hard rock act like Godsmack and that kind of stuff is ok to me once in awhile when the Opeth gets old. No big deal not going to their shows or anything. The fact is that COC just don't get it and thats why they will forever be playing small clubs or opening for other bands. If I was Disturbed I would have them kicked off and replaced with a band who gives a shit. I am sure Pepper and the rest of the Nola boys have bills from Katrina so instead of whining about oppurtunities you may not get again after this you should have been trying to win over every fan in the building and sell as much merch as possible. Instead you are putting on a half assed show and calling the people who came to it mall metalheads. Get your head out of the fucking clouds and your feet back on the ground. Lets not forget your guys opened for Metallica back in 1997 on the Load tour to a crowd of only a few thousand of the 18,000+ every night and you werent bitching about it then. So get the fuck over it thousands of bands would kill to be where you guys are.

When I first saw those 2 names on the same bill i thought it was odd right away, so im not surprised whats going on.. BUT C.O.C and Pepper shouldve known that this would happen. Both bands are very diffirent musically... Its like having stupid linkin park open for Opeth or someone, it just doesnt go.
So what does that tell me about C.O.C, well i think they are in it for the money right now more then anything else cause their music nowadays is not that good and Disturbed's music is a lot more mainstream and catches more attention for people.

i'm sorry,but i can't believe the shit i'm reading -C.O.C.'s latest record "In The Arms Of God" is one of the best records i've ever heard and when i saw them at Trees (R.I.P.) in Dallas last July w/ Crowbar,both bands ripped the place apart!.......C.O.C. is one of the truly great metal bands around and people on here are saying they're "doing it for the money".....unbelievable.............

I can't believe people are arguing about this, both bands are absolutely ridiculous. My 13 year old sister who has played guitar for a year could write better riffs than both of these bands and pepper sounds, at best, like half a retard. Anyone who wants to argue this could do one of three things; email and i'll set you straight (layyourfearstorest@yahoo.com), listen to real metal or for that matter real music (e.g. cryptopsy, arsis, at the gates, etc.), or you can go fuck yourself.

Heard one Disturbed song and you've heard them all, true. The fans probably do suck, but what the fuck has COC achieved??? To be a big influence to many bands yet never manage to be a true headliner.
I've met the guitar player from Disturbed a couple times. Very nice guy. We did, however, talk shit about PapaRoach! I am not a fan of the band but if Dan can take the time to chill and talk some shit, that's okay. He wasn't giving any interviews whining about shit like openning for lesser bands.

CoC were much better when they were a hardcore/crossover band. Pepper has come off as as much of a holier-than-thou rockstar than David from Disturbed. Both of them are self-absorbed morons. Truthfully, CoC hasn't released a decent album since Deliverance. Pepper and Co. have been treading water ever since. Disturbed is a pop band that releases albums that are rife with catchy pop-rock songs; CoC is a band that ran out of ideas a long time ago and should have called it quits. If anything, CoC needs to call it a day and not Disturbed. Disturbed's entire reason for existing is to "move units". They're a corporate rock band, through and through.

...but one day awhile back I was talking to the wife of one of COC's members and she was telling me terrible the tour had been for COC and that they were a bunch of assholes,etc etc. I told her I saw a picture of Disturbed and that it gave me sort of an idea of what they sounded like, which was like if Creed tried to go extreme metal. She said that was perfect and how that was exactly what they were like.
So they made a mistake. Big deal.
The last COC record was (speaking as an older dude who saw thier mid eighites three piece lineup millions of times) by far the most interesting music they have done but I'll still take the "Animosity" era anyday over it, or most of the stuff that is praised on this messageboard.
And lastly...
Black Flag.

the last COC cd's was won of the best metal album's of the last 10 years while Disturbed have not come up with an album that makes the top 10,000. Disturbed is not even good enough to play in the same city as COC,m yet alone have them as their opening act.

I saw the CoC tour when they came through Atlanta, and I've gotta say that they are one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Pepper is a class act, and one hell of a guitar player. Woody Weatherman rocks out too, and they have such an amazing catalogue of songs to draw from. I regularly enjoy my Corrosion albums.
I bought the new Disturbed CD too, it's not even close to "In The Arms of God", but even average rock and metal is still good in my book.
I also have a CoC T-shirt.
I never really wanted to see Disturbed in concert, but I wanted so badly to see CoC one more time. Think about this, if you live in England, you could have seen the best tour I've ever heard of: Clutch + CoC. Holy shit that would rock balls.
Keep on rocking, Pepper. Oh, and pull Phil's head out of his ass and do Down III. I've been looking forward to that for years.

Sorry, but I'm sure Pepper and Co thought they could play this tour and be exposed to more fans. But as we suspected when we first heard about this tour, Disturbed fans wouldn't get it. Now, to blame Pepper for his comments is a sad state. Disturbed, despite having sold more CDs, I bet will not be around in 20 years....that said, in the long run, COC IS THE BETTER BAND, and always will be!

When it comes to being a professional musician, it's all about how many albums you sell. Disturbed has went gold/platinum on their albums, and COC has never even pushed 500k units to go gold. So as far as that goes, Disturbed wins.
I own both bands CD's. I own a lot of other bands CD's too. You have to diversify as a listener too musically. In fact, you have to diversify in all walks of life.
As far as what happened here with COC and Disturbed...who knows. Something must have happened on tour. Wierd because Draiman was looking forward to touring with COC as it said in the magazine Volume from the Jager tour. Pepper also said in the magazine that the bands were compatible. Maybe something to do with Dime? I can't wait for a Draiman response though.

If Pepper had half the integrity you guys are granting him, he and COC would have dropped off the tour when they realized it wasn't working. Instead, they stuck with it til the end so they could get their paycheck. That's a fucking sell-out. As clear-cut as you can get, my friends.

Well, if you take Pepper's word, no one was there to see them anyways, right? If he really believed what he is saying, then he would have dropped off the tour early on. He seemed pretty happy and thanked Disturbed onstage when I saw them, and now he turns on them now that the tour is over. I don't care if you hate Disturbed, whatever, but that is such a bitch move. Biting the hand that feeds. Pepper is a true COCsucker.

I don't know about this. At one end, I hate it when bands attack fans of their band or someone elses but on the other end, the average Disturbed fan isn't the most intelligent and tasteful fellow. I really like COC and just about everything Pepper has done but I think he could've said the tour wasn't going so well and stopped there. Most of us can assume as much as to why it wasn't going well.
Anyways, hope COC does get a better tour next time out where they play more to their audience.
