BLACK SABBATH, PANTERA, MEGADETH, IRON MAIDEN Members Featured In 'Story of Metal' Documentary - Jan. 12, 2006
VH1 has announced the premiere of "Heavy: The Story of Metal", a four-part documentary tracing the evolution of heavy metal music and culture, from its dark, grim beginnings in Birmingham, England to the worldwide force that it remains to this day.

In a series of four themed hours premiering Monday-Thursday, May 1-4 at 9 p.m, "Heavy: The Story of Metal" explores four decades of music, each hour examining this powerful and often misunderstood genre, from metal's pioneers to its love of glam and excess; from the fight for metal's rebellious soul to its storied flirtation with the devil:

Episode One traces metal's roots in the late-'60s in the bombed-out industrial town of Birmingham England to the spectacular rise of KISS and "glam metal" in the early 70's.

Episode Two examines metal's growing pains during the '70s when both high-brow rock critics and punk rock threatened its very existence. By decade's end, bands such as IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST and DEF LEPPARD gave birth to what became known as "The New Wave of British Heavy Metal."

Episode Three sees metal thrive in, of all places, sunny California. VAN HALEN, POISON, MÖTLEY CRÜE — it's the world of hair metal. And, keeping everyone's Jacuzzi-soaked ego in check, a little film called "Spinal Tap" emerges.

Episode Four takes a walk on the dark side: GUNS N' ROSES, METALLICA, thrash, grunge, and how the music and images of MARILYN MANSON became associated with the Columbine massacre.

Told from the perspective of the musicians, promoters, writers and fans who have kept metal's flame alive for four decades, "Heavy: The Story of Metal" contains revealing, hilarious and sometimes shocking conversations. Interviews include Sebastian Bach, Jerry Cantrell, Phil Collen, Bruce Dickinson, Fred Durst, Ace Frehley, Rob Halford, Scott Ian, Tony Iommi, Chris Jericho, Lemmy Kilmister, Chuck Klosterman, Jani Lane, Tommy Lee, Doc McGhee, Bret Michaels, Dave Mustaine, Vinnie Paul, Mark Putnam, Riki Rachtman, Dave "Snake" Sabo, Nikki Sixx, Slash, Dee Snider, Geoff Tate, Eddie Trunk, Rob Zombie and more.

In the same vein as VH1's critically acclaimed, award winning 2004 hip-hop chronicle "And You Don't Stop", "Heavy: The Story of Metal" combines interviews, verite moments and rare and exclusive footage and photos, to bring metal's history to life while examining the considerable pop-culture impact of the loudest music that ever was.

"Heavy: The Story of Metal" is produced by 441 Productions in conjunction with VH1. Stephen Mintz serves as Supervising Producer. Matt Maranz is Executive Producer for 441 Productions. Brad Abramson, Shelly Tatro, and Michael Hirschorn serve as Executive Producers for VH1.

This sounds good, I'll definately check it out. Too bad it didn't go one step further and do a show on extreme metal. But, then again, most people who watch VH1 probably don't know Carcass, Napalm Death, Onslaught, Repulsion, and other pioneers of the death metal genre.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to check it out. Sports Net is doing a History of Space Exploration documentary due to air at the same time.

Hey folks, I'll watch this thing but for a true fan, no one will be happy with this. It'll graze over a few highpoints, show a few clips and toss in some lame commentary. It's nice that they've devoted that much time to the genre but this certainly won't be in-depth. Also, so much has happened since Episode 4.

Def Leppard are from England and technically they are part of the NWOBHM even though they sound nothing like Iron Maiden or Samsom, etc.

You know after seeing their "worst 50 metal moments" where they deem Rikki Rachtman as a more HARDER EDGED host, (get the fuck outta here! that guy is a wuss) I tend to think this would suck as much as asking loser bands like warrant to discuss what is metal. I guess scott ian helps with his comments. But I really have no hope for a traditional old school overview.

Hopefully different people will represent this show and produce it.
They need to do a couple of "Behind the Music" - on some of our favorite bands.

They Just never seem to Get it when it comes to metal and would rather poke fun at the big hair 80s. And try to embarass everyone with some gay guy making queenie comments on 80s fashion.

Some geeky club owner who got all chummy with GnR and the whole LA metal(?) scene in the 80's got a small break on MTv and everyone in the media thinks he's the shit. Well he is a SHIT, a bootlicker, an ass-kisser and generally a whiney person to start with. One lucky break does not make this bozo any more of an expert than any of us on this board. Matter of fact, most of the posters on this board have far more knowledge about music than this moron. He's a mouthpiece and NOTHING more.

Its so damned true. These mainstream dumb asses know less about Metal than many of us who read and post here. But this has been the case since Metal even started. You always have uninitiated morons who think that Korn, Fred Douche and fukking Candlebox are Metal. Lets break it down:

Episode one looks to be ok and should hopefully be a fairly accurate telling of the rise of Black Sabbath, Kiss etc.

Episode two deals with the NWOBHM which is cool, but I honestly believe could have been combined with the stuff in episode one.

Episode three: Oh crap. Of corpse the posers have to have an entire hour dedicated to them. I remember loathing bands like Warrant, the "false" Slaughter, Faster Pussycat and all that ilk just as I abhor nu-metal today. Aint it weird how there always has to be a genre in existence that is an absolute abomination of what true Metal is?

Episode four: pass me a puke bag. "A walk on Metal's dark side" with Guns N Roses? GNR dark? Ive seen dry erase markers darker than that lame crap. And yeah Metallica were gods until the black album but they were never really all that "dark". The pre sell out Metallica could have made a better one hour show than the false glam episode. And where the hell is Slayer? Black and Death Metal? At least they have thrash but you know thats just gonna be like 3 minutes and then they'll spend like 45 minutes on Manson.

Of course we'll end up watching it, but I have no expectations of a true and appropriate history of Metal being shown again because people who are clueless on what real Metal is have put this together.

If this is about metal, then why are there interviews with non-metal genres? Glam, nu-metal, hard rock, alternative...this shit ain't metal!

That's the thing that shits me about these VH1 supposed 'metal' specials - I spend half the time screaming at the screen "they're not fucking metal!!!"

All right, it is vh1, but the filmmakers are trying to make it the best they can. The press release is only a partial list of who they interviewed. Any HUGE names that aren't there aren't because they couldn't schedule those people, even though they tried. Kerry king from Slayer WAS interviewed. As far as Nu Metal, unfortunately, for a time it was popular, and gets talked about. RThat's what Durst is there for. 80's metal was also pretty popular too. I don't think many people on here DIDN"T listen to that back in the day, although for some reason they can't admit to it today. So you like heavier music now. Most of us do. But there was a time when that is what metal or hard rock or whatever you want to call it was. Let's move on from that old, tired argument!
Watch the show, then decide. At least it sounds like a step in the right direction. I know the people who are actually making it very good intentions.
If there's enough interest, maybe they will shoot a history of thrash metal show...
