ATHEIST Regroup, Announce Exclusive Festival Appearances - Jan. 13, 2006
Seminal technical metal pioneers ATHEIST have regrouped for a run of exclusive live performances.

Guitarist/vocalist Kelly Shaefer has reassembled what is widely considered the band's classic recording lineup (Shaefer, guitarist Rand Burkey, bassist Tony Choy, and drummer Steven Flynn) for two exclusive festival performances; Italy's Evolution Festival and Germany's Wacken Open Air. Shaefer comments, "We're very excited to be able to get back on the stage and play these insane tunes hit the air again the proper way with Flynn, Burkey and Choy. It's going to be very exciting and something not to be missed!"

ATHEIST will take part on Evolution Festival (scheduled for July 16 and 17 in Brescia, Italy) and Wacken Open Air (scheduled for August 3-5 in Schleswig Holstein, Germany). These will be the first in a series of exclusive festival performances announced. Shaefer continues, "We would like to make a great festival run this year and expose as many as possible to the music we lived and died for. Many thanks to the Evolution Festival and Wacken for helping to give many people who never got to see ATHEIST live a chance to see us one last time. This is our chance to make the music we worked so hard to create come alive one last time, and we guarantee that it will not disappoint."

ATHEIST has recently had its wildly-influential catalog (1988's "Piece of Time", 1993's "Elements", and the 1991's legendary "Unquestionable Presence") reissued internationally via Relapse Records. Additionally, "Unquestionable Presence" was recently featured in Decibel magazine as part of its ongoing Hall of Fame feature. The Hall of Fame feature highlights influential and pivotal releases in metal history, and "Unquestionable Presence" joins of ranks of previously profiled classics such as SLAYER's "Reign In Blood", SEPULTURA's "Roots", and AT THE GATES' "Slaughter of the Soul", among others.

Atheist were a really innovative and technical day, and they deserved more recognition than they got.I think Unquestionable Presence is one of the best technical metal records ever made!.I hope they can record this live show for a dvd, and with little luck, maybe a new cd?? who knows!.

The reissues of the label helped them to get back together since there is still a fan based that is still hungry for their music.

I also think that the regroup will help them establish as a GREAT metal band.

Now what we need is a new record with this lineup and.......

regroup of the following bands:

CYNIC
PESTILENCE

Pestilence put a myspace page together, so it's entirely possible that they are toying around with the idea of regrouping.

Wish they would tour.... this is kinda simultaneously awesome and disappointing, as I wonder what Roger Patterson's thinking as he watches us from heaven, y'know? From Decibel Magazine's interview with the band, it seems like some of them were disappointed that they even DID the "Elements" album.

Nonetheless. Great band. Love'em. ON THEY SLAY!

I for one am hoping that Atheist record another album. I'm sure it will fucking rule just like their other three. Pestilence regrouping would definately be badass too.

Kind of off the subject, but Morbid Angel need to get their asses to the studio soon.

HO...LY SHIT...

Wow. Just wow. This could prove to be interesting. I wonder what the motivation behind it is, though. Most "reunions" aren't true reunions, and are brought on by the almighty dollar. I doubt this one is, though. Great shit. I'd definitely see them if they decided to go on a full-scale tour.

Only "tech metal" band that matters (well, along with Watchtower, that is).

I saw Atheist many years ago, I believe in support of Morbid Angel (?), with Sadistic Intent opening; I had never heard of them, and they slayed... and several weeks following I hear that they wrecked their bus and their awesome bassist was dead. Glad I could see them when I did.

Well, not cynic, but the full line up has played some not very metal songs together on Sean Malone's project 'Gordian Knot' if you are interested to see what they are up to. That, and Malone was tapped for bass on the O.S.I. disk

I'd like to see YOU play basic scales correctly, when you not only play left handed - but the strings are upside down as well!!!

Rand Burkey has effectively taken a standard right handed guitar and turned it upside down to play it.

It can't be easy to play like that, and it takes a shitload more skill to play inverted powerchords & scales. I think he's a lot more talented than people give him credit for...

Rand Burkey is one of the finest guitarists heavy metal has to offer. He stuff always sounds so cool thanks to his upside-down way of playing.
