PAGE, VAN HALEN, SLASH, HAMMETT, RHOADS Named Top Guitar Soloists Of All Time - Jan. 17, 2006
LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page of has been voted the top guitar soloist of all time for the song "Stairway to Heaven". According to The Sun Online, Page's performance topped the survey held by the web site AboutGuitars.com and beat out the likes of Eddie Van Halen for the track "Eruption". The third place was occupied by the dual guitar solo by Allen Collins and Gary Rossington on LYNYRD SKYNYRD's "Freebird".

The top 10 guitar solos, according to AboutGuitars.com, are:

01. "Stairway to Heaven" - Jimmy Page (LED ZEPPELIN)

01. "Stairway to Heaven" - Jimmy Page (LED ZEPPELIN)
02. "Eruption" - Eddie Van Halen (VAN HALEN)
03. "Freebird" - Allen Collins and Gary Rossington (LYNYRD SKYNYRD)

08. "Hotel California" - Don Felder and Joe Walsh (THE EAGLES)
09. "Crazy Train" - Randy Rhoads (OZZY OSBOURNE)
10. "Crossroads" - Eric Clapton (CREAM)

I mean, there's no way in hell that any guitarist on that list is better then Randy Rhoads.

These polls are always so lame and stupid. There are many better solos than the above. Just off the top of my head, I'd say the following is better (not in order), but not necessarily the best ever.

1. Baptism of Fire - Glenn Tipton (solo album)
2. Over the Mountain - Randy Rhoads
3. Lonely is the Word - Tony Iommi
4. Lucretia - Marty Friedman
5. Girl Gone Bad - Eddie Van Halen
6. Walk - Dimebag
7. Sex child - John Sykes (Blue Murder)
8. Death Certificate - Steer / Amott (Carcass)
9. Dead Skin Mask - Hanneman / King
10. About 800 other songs than the ones listed in the bullshit poll from the magazine.

COMMENT | Another bullshit list however...

Not a terrible list I must admit because they are usually totally fucked. All the songs on that list are pretty good. Maybe this should be a top 10 list of the most famous songs with decent guitar solos. If that was the criteria, then where is 'Cowboys from Hell' by Pantera? 'The Unforgiven' solo totally blows away the 'One' solo but it depends whether you are judging on complexity or good solo writing. People are always going to have problems with these lists so its pointless making them.

"Wheres Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme? so underrated he is."

It's not a list of who is the best guitarist - it is a list of which is the best solo. And on those grounds should Crazy Train really be in there - even if you love Rhoads? It really isn't a top ten guitar solo in my opinion - it's more like a break anyway.

Hammett fast math? Listen to Unforgiven and try telling me that solo is wankery. That solo is pure melodic emotion. Not to mention Fade to Black. There are solos he does though where he absolutely shreds it up and blazes over the fret board such as Struggle Within. Now that solo fucking owns any solo on that list. But since it wasn't a radio single then I guess it is excluded.

You think the Comfortably Numb solo is harder to play than Struggle Within? I didn't think so. I'm not fucking stupid, I know that Comfortably Numb is a better song, but you just totally missed my fucking point,

Yes, Struggle Within uses wah, but very well. By "little else" you mean that awesome shredding right? Jimi Hendrix used wah as well, does that mean that he is "all wah wha and little else"? Holy shit! I think Dimebag used a wah too, he must be shit!! You sir, are the fudgepacker.

And for Ozzy stuff, Mr. Crowley, No More Tears and Shot in the Dark have for example a lot better solo than Crazy Train.

Over the Mountain is my favorite Randy solo.

Kirk is over-rated. His playing seems limited to me, by his inability to use all four fingers on the fretboard. Well' I rarely see him use any more than that.

Also, and only my opinion, Zepp, Eagles and Floyd are all over-rated bands. I can respect what they've accomplished. Because they've sold a lot of albums. But shit like Pink Floyd is good if you're contemplating suicide and nothing more.

"November Rain" has a great solo. Clapton belongs on the list by default. But I think you could replace the three bands I mentioned above with better stuff.

because why on earth would you expect YOUR favourite solo's to be the ones that would apear on a general poll, or at the very least a list compiled so that most people will recognise within a basic rock genra.

I've not heard anybody mension Frank Zappa, City of Tiny Lights solo is for me better than most of the stuff on the list, but I wouldn't expect it to be there

It also seems pathetic that all I'm seeing is 'metal' or rock guitarists being mensioned. If it's a list for a wider greatest solo's you'd have to have Peter Green, Jan Akerman, Nils Lorfgren (solo on Keith don't go for fucks sake!!!), Walter Trout, Ali Dimialo, Uli Jon Roth...

The fact is, most of the songs on there (with a few exceptions which are poor choices) would be able to get people within an age range of say 20-50 to get up and play air guitar, knowing the notes, for most of them. As much as everybody on here seems to love Dimebag, in 20 years time I doubt very much Pantera will be remembered in the same light as Zeppelin or Floyd. Same can be said for most of the metal specific players people are listing....

Plus Glenn Tipton? Awesome rythem player, but could never be consider a great soloist

Besides, if you weren't such a dumb fuck, you'd know that allen collins played it on his own when they played in concert most of the time.
