COREY TAYLOR Says SLIPKNOT Were Offfered Headlining Slot At This Year's OZZFEST - Jan. 18, 2006
SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor spoke to MTV.com about the upcoming sophomore effort from his STONE SOUR project, which also features SLIPKNOT guitarist Jim Root. He'll be flying out to FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl's Los Angeles studio on January 22 to begin recording the as-yet-untitled follow-up to the band's self-titled 2002 debut, which has sold more than 500,000 copies.

"This is the first time that [guitarist] Josh [Rand] and [drummer] Joel [Ekman] and [bassist] Shawn [Economaki] get to go through the whole experience," Taylor said. "The first time around, there weren't any expectations. We were going to do our thing, put our art out there and just see what happened. And people really dug it, and there's a lot of anticipation for this, so we're stepping it up. We've got so many different styles going on right now that it's really cool. We were just like, 'What can we do to top the first album? What can we do to take it to the next level?' And I think we have. The material on this [album] is so much stronger than the first album, it's almost a pity."

Taylor said STONE SOUR's fans can expect some "very atmospheric stuff," along with the "the hard rock and the heavy stuff" that'll saturate the outing. "It's a lot more melodic this time around, a lot more from the spirit of what the band started with in 1992," he continued. "It represents so much more of what we do. There's a really beautiful piano tune. There's a song that's borderline funk that's really cool — I'm really digging the hell out of it. It's like a cross between the theme song from 'Shaft' and I don't know what. It's melodic as f---."

Before SLIPKNOT announced they would be taking 2006 off, Taylor said the band was offered the headlining spot for this summer's Ozzfest.

"We were out on the road for two years, and we did the entire 2004 Ozzfest," he explained. "It [was] time for some of us to take a break. They offered us a lot of money, but it wasn't about that. If you burn up the audience, they're not going to come back. How much more can you do, on an album that came out two years ago? I'm much more interested in doing STONE SOUR these days.

"Now, if they asked me to do STONE SOUR on Ozzfest, that's a different story."

Slipknow should not headline ozzfest...One reason not to buy a ticket. If they did put enough good bands on to make me buy a ticket, I would not stay for slipknot....Why does Sharon think Slipknot would draw the crowds that Ozzfest is used to...I dont know...

Calell you dumb ass. You mean to tell me that slipknot can't draw a crowd? Have you ever been to one of their shows? They sell out almost everywhere they go (and no I'm going to get a stupid "they sure did sell out" joke). Face it, the fact that you became too cool for Slipknot when you realized more than just you and your buddies liked it, does not mean they cannot draw a crowd. Say what you will about the music but they put on a hell of a show.

What are the chances of Metallica headlining Ozzfest? I mean, why not? Maybe because of Summer Sanitarium. I don't know. But I think if Ozzy is really retired, they had better get a big name band to take his place, or Ozzfest will fade out faster than you can say Lallapalooza! Metallica is as big as you can get. But since they are in the studio working on HOPEFULLY a better produced follow-up to St. Anger, they wouldn't do it anyway. If so, maybe Metallica-Black Label-Slayer-Korn-Megadeth-Anthrax-Shadows Fall. I would pay top dollar for that Bill !!!

I've said it before. Just wait and see. They'll be done with the album and they're hot right now.

MyTurdLicker won't do it because of Summer Sanitarium and the fact that they'll be in the midst of a new album. It's possible but my money's on Muttley.

all that bashing about slipknot is useless..
and even if you don't like them..you know very well that they'll draw a crowd at ozzfest. i'm glad they didn't take the spot though and corey gave the same reason that i was thinking.

too much slipknot at one time would be entirely stupid.

but even so, they'd bring a crowd.

Well said BM, but I don't think it will be Motley Crue headlining.

I could care less about Ozzfest. The SO incidents from last year have me convinced that this tour is dead and will flop for sure. I'm looking more forward to Gigantour - hopefully THAT will be THE metal tour of the year and forward here on US soil.

it isn't very good at all, but it makes good business sense, and thats what matters to Sharon. the ozzfest is in a state of crisis. Its lost a lot of its crediability due to the Maiden egging inicdent, and in the shape of Sounds of the Underground, Gigantour and Maidenfest if it ever appears, viable rivals for the crown of top metal festival.

and to cap it all off, the star of the show himself, Ozzy osbourne, won't be performing for the first time ever. they need an iconic and deeply popular band to take over. and there in lies the nub. None of the new breed of metal bands have had record sales above 500,000 in the states yet, all the established bands who could do this role either dislike the ozzfest intensely (Tool, Maiden and apparently Metallica), are too tarnished by the "nu" brush (Korn, Marilyn Manson), or played in the recent past (Slipknot, Judas Priest)

System are only viable commerical option left. they can comfortably sell out the same sort of venues the ozzfest plays by themselves, plus they'll bring a whole new type of fan to the Ozzfest, one that Sharon would hope would soon become a regular visitor.

I'm sure a few of you idiots are from here and play in bands with mall core names like "gutterbomb" and "children of eve". I'm sick of it, every last fuckin bit

All people know how to do is fuckin put down bands because their making money doing something they love, while the idiots who make their comments are someone elses slave. and the rest thing music is all about drinking and drugs.

The whole lot of you are morons, there's that one band "Magnus rising" and they called that a what? TRIBUTE? hell fucking no you god damn posers

Bands like Slipknot actually have guts and talent, Slipknot haven't sold out, neither have most of the other bands you people put down.

I"m sick and tired of coming on here and reading about who hates this band and how you moronic idiots can't get past a certain part of a bands career.

Metallica, theres a band that all you idiots put down, if James never went to rehab and had of ended up quitting metallica or dead, you idiots would be on here saying "RIP HETFIELD", your all pathetic.

I hoope the idiots from st johns read this and I hope they intake it because what I'm saying is true. All you idiots are nothing more then wanna be rockstars

Its like Chuck Schuldiner once said "I"m proud to say that fame never got me addicted to drugs and made me shoot myself like Kurt CObain"

and that's because Slayer & Judas Priest were there in 04 and Maiden was there in 05. The ones preceding 04 looked like nu metal circlejerks to me so I chose to stay away.

I can't stand Slipknot so if they're the headliner and if there are no other good bands like Maiden or Priest, then I won't go.

I'll hold off judgment until a lineup is finalized.

But that's just me.

I am personally getting tired of Slipknot and i saw them two years in a row at ozzfest and they are not that great live. Sharon needs to seriously consider getting Metallica to headline, they will sell out every ozzfest. ACDC, Marilyn Manson, Dio, Tool or System of a Down are probebly frontrunners. Dont be suprised if Ozzy changes his mind and jumps on the headlining spot.
