Heavy Metal Documentary 'A Headbanger's Journey' To Hit Theaters Next Month - Jan. 18, 2006
Seville Pictures has announced that "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey", directed by Sam Dunn, Scot McFadyen and Jessica Joy Wise, will be released on February 24 across Canada.

The documentary follows Sam Dunn, a professional anthropologist, long-time heavy metal fan and practitioner through his own band, as he searches for the source of the mythology surrounding this music maligned and cursed by some, but adored by millions worldwide who cling to it like the cross itself. Over the course of his worldwide trek, he examines metal's obsession with some of life's most provocative subjects — sex, religion, violence and death — and discovers some things about the culture that even he can't defend.

Featuring legends such as Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, IRON MAIDEN's Bruce Dickinson, BLACK SABBATH's Tony Iommi, TWISTED SISTER's Dee Snider, Geddy Lee from RUSH and a host of newer, more extreme spokesmen, "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" is a fast-paced blast through the genre's origins, through doom and thrash, through the saccharine hair metal phase, through the notorious black metal blight of the late '90s, right up until the metalcore revolution shaking the music industry's foundations today. Metal is louder, faster, more intrusive and more insidiously invasive today than its ever been, and "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" tells us why, for once, from the point of view of a true metalhead, an insider who lives it, breathes it, and nails the complex tale dead-on. Casual fan or ardent student of metal's million permutations, this documentary will inform relentlessly.

You can watch the trailer, find more information about the release and read the directors' blog at www.metalhistory.com.

The documentary received excellent reviews at its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and at the Stockholm International Film Festival, the Montreal Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, the Bergen International Film Festival and the Copenhagen International Film Festival. It will soon be screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

"Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" is the first in-depth movie ever made on this subject.

The film is distributed in Canada by Seville Pictures. Seville International is handling international sales and has sold to it Warner in the USA, Momentum in the United Kingdom, Constantin Film in Germany, Amuse Soft Entertainment in Japan, Future Film in Scandinavia, Paradiso in Benelux and Dendy Films in Australia.

Seville Entertainment is a producer, distributor and international sales agent of quality independent feature films with offices in Montreal and Toronto. Its catalogue of Canadian rights to over 500 quality independent feature films and world rights to 90 features and docs is one of the largest in Canada. Subsidiaries include Seville Pictures Inc., Seville Productions Inc. and Malofilm Productions Inc. Seville is a private company owned and controlled by its key management and employees. yup, they will find the most ignorant amongst us to put on film.

And I mean IGNORANT, I don't mean people who don't know the correct english grammar such as myself. *cough cough*

I'm talking about the idiots who you see at a metal show, and the only thing they can do is yell at the top of their lungs at the camara and probably say stupid shit and do the devil horns.

Anyway, the trailer looked "ok" until I saw thay slipknot guy in it. It's "METAL HISTORY"....not...."TREND TODAY".

looks interesting. not exactly the best "expert" lineup of todays metal scene, but some good representatives (bruce, dio, emperor). couldve done without the whole sunset strip motley crue/dee snider angle. i just hope they talk about the subject intelligently and dont have the conclusion be that people listen to metal to let out aggression based on deep seed childhood anguish bla bla...

...metal, or at least some genres need to stay underground. I also agree that it's going pop, mainstream, etc. Good for the bands, promoters, business people, but not good for us fans that enjoy something "different" and "unique". We now even have the metal police, that try to tell metalheads how to behave, act, say, live, dress, etc. I remember that metal was to do "different" music, hang out with people with tthe same intererst and talk crap about non-metal people, etc. Now, you have all these new metal people fighting against each other, putting down other genres of metal, just acting plain stupid. And now, metal goes to the movies. Since I've been part of this genre of music for decades, live, breathe, and sleep metal, there's no need for me to see this movie. I already know what metal is about!

i do not see why you people are so upset over this. its a chance for more people to get into the music. the underground will always be here for those of us who just wont like music because more people like it. and i think its bullshit that you people are so ignorant that you hate bands just because they are more popular than others. grow some balls and like the music you like because you like it. and as for this movie, if it comes to the US, then im gonna see it because i love metal. period.

p.s. grow the fuck up

To the best of my knowledge, "Decline Part II" has not been offically released on DVD, tjhere were probably too many hassles with music publishing rights or something. Occasionally bootleg DVDs of it turn up on e-Bay. I'm still getting by with my old VHS tape copy which I found in a bargain bin about ten years ago. I found that and Armored Saint's "A Trip Thru Red Times" VHS on the same day for like $3.98 a pop. Now THAT was a good day!

Just on a whim I checked e-Bay for any DVDs of "Decline II," there are a couple of VHS copies out there right now but no DVDs. So all I can say is happy hunting, it's gotta be out there somewhere...

I saw this film in September when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. It is actually a really good documentary. Someone mentioned that they better not say people listen to metal because they are anguished kids. Take into consideration that Sam Dunn, one of the co-directors, who appears in the film and guides the journey is a die-hard metal fan himself. Huge Iron Maiden fan to boot (there is some great interview footage with Bruce Dickinson). I spoke with him briefly after the showing and had a great conversation.

The film covers all genres of metal, starting from exploring the argument of which band was actually the first metal band (the answer will surprise you..and will not be any band usually mentioned here) all the way to present day, putting a particulary deep investigation into Norweigen Black Metal and what makes it tick. I am not going to give away how Dunn concludes the film, but definitely suggest checking it out. If you get a chance to see it in a theatre, do yourself a favour and take advantage of their sound system. I know I will be back at the theatre next month to see it again. If not the DVD will suffice once it comes out.

Oh! IRON MAIDEN'S Bruce Dickinson and BLACK SABBATH'S Tony Iommi! I thought it was gonna be Nobel prize winner/dog trainer Bruce Dickinson and famous dentist/piano tuner Tony Iommi. I'm glad they cleared that up. Kind of like it's Yngwie J. Malmsteen so you won't confuse him with all of the other Yngwie Malmsteens out there.
