CRASHDIET: More Details Emerge In Death Of Frontman DAVE LEPARD - Jan. 21, 2006
Shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Friday, January 20, the police in the Swedish city of Uppsala, north of Stockholm, were called to the apartment of CRASHDIET frontman David Hellman (photo) (a.k.a. Dave Lepard). He had not been in touch with his friends or family for 20 days and a close friend of his had entered the apartment and found him dead, reports the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

"There is no foul play involved in his death, other than that we don't know what the circumstances are," police spokesperson Christer Nordström told the newspaper Expressen.

Zübeyde Güngodogmus is shocked by the news that her neighbor has been found dead in his apartment. They were acquaintances.

"He was so sweet and very friendly," she tells Expressen.

However, she had noticed a change in the rock star. Last week she met him at the local supermarket.

"He looked so thin and was out of character," she says.

During the first weeks of 2006, there were signs that everything was not well in the CRASHDIET camp. The other members were rumored to be fed up with Hellman's excessive drug intake and were on the verge of leaving, or already had left, the band. Both they and Hellman's family have declined to talk to the media at the moment.

Hellman, 25, made no qualms about his sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle.

"We want to get hard rock back on track again and it's nice that it's getting bigger again," he told the Swedish music magazine Groove last year. "All the other crap is becoming so tiresome. I mean, hip hop people live the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle to a much larger extent than hard rockers do."

Describing his lifestyle, he said: "You live in chaos, depend on welfare, are an addict and things fucking suck. That's why it often collides with the music; it's too much of the good stuff and the music is affected. You would need 48 hours per day, but you're so fucking stupid and get your priorities wrong."

CRASHDIET were a Stockholm, Sweden-based Eighties hard rock-style band whose debut album, "Rest in Sleaze", entered the Swedish national album chart at position No. 12. They were reportedly the first "sleaze rock" band in over 10 years to be signed directly to a major company — Universal Music. The group, whose members were said to be in their early 20s, were scheduled to make their U.S. debut in March at the South by Southwest music conference/festival in Austin, Texas. A video clip, dubbed "On the Road with Crashdiet 2005", was recently posted on their official web site: Real Media, Windows Media.

In a joint statement released to the media, the surviving members of CRASHDIETMartin Sweet (guitar), Peter London (bass) and Eric Young (drums) — said, "As a bandmember, but most of all as a person, we will miss him for all eternity. Dave was nothing but a genius and a very special person. CRASHDIET will definitely not continue as a band. CRASHDIET consisted of four people and now one has left us."

I never knew the guy, and never heard his music, so I can't comment on his skills as a musician or his disposition as a person. However, while it sucks that someone's life ended prematurely in such a manner, and I feel bad for his friends and family....I cannot take any sympathy for this guy whatsoever.

He was a junkie loser. Plain and simple.

-END QUOTE-

"DEPENDENT ON WELFARE". Wow. I'm all for helping people out when they're down. Everyone needs a helping hand every now and then. But this dirtbag glorified the fact that he needed others to take care of him, be it with his friends on a microeconomic level, or society and the government on a macroeconomic level. Having friends that live in Sweden, I understand that their economy and governmental system is set up on a welfare-like state. This is fine when it comes to things like education and health care, especially considering the entire population of Sweden is roughly that of New York City (try doing that with 280 million people....don't think so, holmes).

However, when you have someone who brazenly and openly exploits such a system is sickening. From the reports I've read (and correct me if I'm wrong), but this guy was a junked out loser who was desperately trying to live the lives of his heroes from scenes of the 70's and 80's.

And don't feed us any bullshit about his "tortured soul" or "hard life" or any of that happy horseshit. You want a hard life? Go talk to the people in Africa. They'll show you what a hard life is. People like that get my pity. Not some junked out loser who has probably done society a service by ending his miserable existence on this earth.

Alright, the bile machine is running low, so I'll end my rant. Time to run some errands anyway.

Wow... That's really sad... Just got off the bus, blasting their album "Rest In Sleaze"... Isn't that a fat slab of irony? They we're at the forefront of what was about to be a metal explosion in sweden...

Took a look at a ticketstub I got autographed by him and the guys... Got to exchange a few words with him, really cool guy... Sad to see such a bright light extinguished so soon... Really respected the guy for his ability to write songs, but above all he seemed genuine... One of a handfull of people who embodied rock n' roll...

- Lepard in the newspaper Aftonbladet

In English:

"I started the band to get away from the drinking. When I got the idea I was without an apartment and felt like shit. I simply wanted to do something."

I guess the stress just got the best of him, poor guy.

RIP David

Rockavlon, you are right about capitalism, at least if we're talking about "pure" capitalism. But the guy was living in semi-socialistic Sweden. I can asure you that no one has to starve there. (Nobody, or at least very few, is getting rich either but thats another discussion)

Rockavalon, I certainly appreciate various points of views from different ways of thinking, but I'd like to counter-point several things you said:

1. passing judgment - like I said, I never knew the guy, and I never passed judgment on his character as a person and how he related to other people. I'm sure he was a very nice person. However, the man said it himself: he glorified the fact that he lived this "rock n roll lifestyle" and that he didn't have to worry about a thing for himself because he had the "welfare" of others to take care of his mistakes. This shows a complete lack of personal responsibility.
Like I said before, if someone is down, help them out. I'm not for abolishing welfare or other social services, but I'm a staunch believer that it should not become a habitual lifestyle. Use welfare to get back to your feet, and then go on your own way.

Now, I'm sure this is where Americans differ greatly from our Scandinavian friends. Many Americans (myself included) are firm believers in individualism when it comes to making your way in life (and please, when I say individualism, please don't say "awww, what about all the trend-hopping American posuers blah blah blah"). That's not what I'm talking about. The Individualism I'm talking about is taking firm responsibility for your own life, your actions, your own destiny.

My parents and my upbringing had a great infuence on instilling certain values in me. However, at the end of the day, it was up to me to determine where I went. I'm at where I am today because of my drive, ambition, and hard work. I don't rely on anyone else to push me along. Basically, THE WORLD DOESN'T OWE ME A FUCKING THING. And that is a concept that many people in America, as well as the rest of the world, can't understand.
Lots of people are looking for handouts without putting in the blood and sweat that is required to get where you want.

In short, my sympathy is saved for people with real problems, such as starving children in Africa or victims of natural disasters. Not some pussy who couldn't handle his own prolbems. Good riddence.

uh....dude, that quote you directed my way, that was the thing i was gonna comment on even before i read your post.
i'm totally for sex, drugs and rock 'n roll....just not in the cheesy Motley Crue/GNR/Poison style with that stupid fucking look those bands had and their generic style of songwriting. i'm guessing that perhaps at least some of you do realize that a lot of this nu-metal shit from the last several years is this generation's version of the shittiest of 80s metal, right?
i think i'll go back to my death metal now if you don't mind. listen to something by a band that doesn't sound like they cut their balls off before recording their vocals.

Fuck all of you guys! You all talking shit about Dave and that you dont feel sorry for him because he was a drug addict. You dont know a shit about whats really happened so shut the fuck up! Dave hung himself in his apartment and he did it because he couldn't handle the stress and the attention around the band. If you dont like their music fine, but it's always a tragedy when somebody take their own life. Dave was a good person and was loved by many people and it's a shame that his gone.
