COMMENT | Pantera SUCKS posted by : dimebagthehomo 1/23/2006 6:13:24 AM
This is the album where the shittiest riffs Pantera have ever come up with make their appearance. What we have here are some solid numbers that sound like Cowboys, but a bit heavier, combined with some absolute crap.
The solid... Fucking Hostile is a fun little song. Rise is okay, as is By Demons be Driven, and Mouth for War is a pretty decent opener, though it is kinda pussified. Overkill would rip them off (Where it Hurts) and rule doing it.
Then, the bad. Walk. This has to be the most awful riff ever in the history of heavy metal. All I have to say is... WHERE IS THE OTHER HALF OF THAT RIFF??? Ya know what, if I wanted silence, I'd turn the CD player off. Jackass.
This Love. Same idea. "You take this love!!" [uncomfortable pause] "Love!" [another pants adjustment interval] We're forced to listen to most of the song on this level, as though someone had censored it out and replaced half of the riff with silence every time. Finally at the end the song kicks into high gear but by then it is far too late to save it. Hollow is a poor attempt at another Cemetery Gates, and comes off as far too boring. A New Level would be great, with that main riff and all, if the chorus weren't so fucking insipid.
So yeah, not all of this album is bad, but enough of it is SO sufficiently decrepit that it brings down the entire worth of it. Fucking halfthrash. Get Wide Fucking Open instead!!
COMMENT | Lamb of God SUCKS posted by : dimebagthehomo 1/23/2006 6:15:03 AM
Most bands on huge corporate labels are shitty, and Lamb of God are no exception. Long have I scorned this utterly dreadful excuse for a metal band, biding my time until the moment was right to pounce and demolish them in a single, blistering review. That time is now.
Lamb of God do not play metal, they play metalcore, which is an utterly worthless sub-genre of metal that should never have been created or named thusly, as it has absolutely nothing to do with metal save the name. A more proper name would have been “neo-punk” or “guttercore”, as this band repeats tired riffs endlessly and bleats at the lower end of the vocal spectrum for the duration. Lamb of God’s songwriting formula is simple: Take 1 pointless riff, vomit some faux-death vocals over it, and repeat it for 4 to 5 minutes with an occasional break for a slightly-different-but-still-exactly-the-fucking-same riff, often casually drifting out of one speaker while the rest of the band masturbates into the cocaine they are about to snort. This is a Lamb of God song, and there are 11 of these vapid fuckers on Ashes of the Wake. Words cannot express how much I detest uninspired drivel like “The Faded Line”, “Big Gun”, and, oh hell, the rest of the entire tracklist.
Why does this even get a point? Because it’s marginally listenable, and I don’t have a particularly strong desire to commit genocide against Virginia after a single listen. Still, this is bad. Very, very bad. Line the pockets of Sony/BMG at your own risk.
COMMENT | Shadows Fall SUCKS posted by : dimebagthehomo 1/23/2006 6:16:57 AM
Yet another crapfest masquerading around as thrash - that is what we have here. While I admit that this has more thrash riffs than all of The Haunted's releases combined, it still reeks heavily of Geighthenburg. Also, riff usage is limited in creativity - playing the same Slayer ripoff over and over again does NOT make you the next Dark Fucking Angel.
And yes, the vocals blow. Either typical hardcore bullshit or "melodeath" crap. This over riffs that come and go. At one moment they are tearing up up with some awesome thrash, then next thing you know they forget about it and do some stupid "accentuate the vocals" melodic crap, or a mediocre fill that forgets any essence of pure fucking metal was ever there. But they just cannot stick with the good ideas. Lots of recycled Iron Maiden worship, and honestly the thrash riffs aren't that great either. Ever hear Testament? This is what they can be compared to - great lead guitar, but the riffs are all the same, over-recycled, and generally boring.
So, if you want to hear some mediocre thrash riffs, mixed in with some crappy noodling, then this is the album for you. If you like "that Swedish sound" combined with thrash metal, then you will totally fucking ejaculate over this one. But, for anyone that's searching for some true old-school thrash metal, pass this one by. It's not a riff-o-rama. ALL RIFFS ALL THE TIME, OR NO METAL AT ALL. Wimps and poseurs, fuck off and die!
COMMENT | Slayer SUCKS posted by : dimebagthehomo 1/23/2006 6:18:46 AM
This is a pretty bad album, even by punk rock standards. There's hardly any metal to be found here - a riff here and there, but for the most part, this is bad modern punk, which has as little to do with the Ramones as it does with classic Slayer.
The production is absolutely terrible. Tom Araya's vocals appear as though they have completely gone down the shitter (not true, he is still halfway decent live, but I think after listening to that distortion for a few minutes, even my hair turned orange and even my pants baggified themselves!), and the songwriting is a disaster. The riffs are far simpler and more repetitive than ever before, and the guitar tone is pretty terrible too. The lyrics have gone from frightening (Hell Awaits era) to just plain stupid - it's clear to see that this band is desperately running out of ideas. (Then again, anyone that admits to being influenced by Slipknot is a few ideas short of a creativity consulting firm to begin with!)
There is the occasional decent moment, but even that is just a shadow of even Divine Intervention. Take the opening track, Disciple, which really gets going with the under-verse riffage, and then goes "pfftt!" with that fecal chorus. Yes, I know god hates at least some of us, but could you please shut the fuck up now? Oh yeah, and this has just about the WORST thrash break ever in the history of the world. I didn't think it to be possible, but they fucked up a thrash break, turning it into more idiotic Hatebreed-styled screaming. Raining Blood called. It wants to have been written by a different band.
The moments then get even fewer and even farther between from here... God Send Death starts off cool, and is even okay when it gets fast, other than the complete neutering done by the production... the vocals suck so goddamn hard, and the guitars lack any aggression whatsoever. Remember when they had that monstrous effect going on in songs like Born of Fire? Well, not any more... this album is strung together by vocal passages, with the guitars playing an incidental role only.
New Faith would be a cool song, as it's got a pretty catchy chorus for once, except under it, the guitars are complete noise and it is the vocals that carry the rhythm and the melody (especially in that "I see the bible in the pool of blood" section). And throw in another pretty pathetic thrash break. I mean this song has more riffs than the rest of the album combined, but fucken A, what sort of genius came up with screaming "yargh, new faith" a few times at the ... end? Thrash breaks are supposed to be good, and in the middle. Riiiiight. Back to the drawing boards. Oh, and Kerry, take Slipknot's cock out of your mouth and put on Hell Awaits again.
This is a really, really painful listen. The occasional okay riff comes through for literally three seconds, and then is forgotten again. The rest of the songs aren't even worth mentioning, really. Cast Down is misplaced mallcore worship, with that completely fucking awful vocal delivery. But hey, at least they throw in that two-note Raining Blood riff. For one second. Threshold? What the fucking christ? Exile? Ehh?? Bloodline??? Cunting fuck, those terrorists really won on 9/11 - they took down our buildings, and allowed this album to be released.
I got a free copy of this once. I gave it to my Slipknot loving friend. He dug the fuck out of it. Enough said.

Tasteless name, but the reviews are just that - reviews. I like reading opinions that differ from mine, or ones that I agree with. I agreed with some of it, but it was a good (entertaining) read at any rate. But the name, yeah, that doesn't show respect at all.
