DISTURBED Frontman Says BLABBERMOUTH.NET Detractors Are 'Nasty Little F*cks'

Jeff Kerby of KNAC.COM conducted an interview with DISTURBED frontman David Draiman on Monday, January 30. A few excertps from the chat follow: KNAC.COM: Do you think that metal is less forgiving than other genres when it comes to their reaction to a band that achieves any real degree of commercial success? Draiman: "I don't know that it is achieving success specifically that makes hardcore kind of fans disenchanted with a band. It is a part of it, but I know what you're referring to…I don't think it's exclusive to metal though. It's something that is kind of like having a real sexy girlfriend, and in the beginning, you have her all to yourself, but the minute everyone else has had access to her, you just don't feel the same way about her anymore. At that point, she sort of becomes a cheap, worthless slut. I was certainly like that about a band or two in my day as well. It's funny because metal today is such a gray, wide-open area, and with today's definitions of metal, I don't know how we fit into it exactly. I don't know that you could even classify us as metal by today's standards or the definitions that are out there. Metal nowadays is kind of typified by the metalcore bands or bands that are either black metal or death metal consisting of vocals that don't have any melody and are very aggressive or, as I like to call them, Cookie Monster-like. God bless them though. There are many of those bands that I am a huge fan of like SHADOWS FALL or LAMB OF GOD. They are bands that have incredible intensity and musicianship, but we're nothing like them. When people compare us to them, it's like apples and oranges in terms of what today's terms and standards are because we're really not metal — we're more hard rock than anything else. At the end of the day, the categorization or the stereotyping that people do is something I could care less about." KNAC.COM: Word on the Internet is that DISTURBED has been confirmed for Ozzfest — is this true? Draiman: "We can neither confirm nor deny such information." KNAC.COM: So any reports stating that you have…? Draiman: "They're garbage. I haven't said anything to anybody. I'm not saying it isn't happening, but I haven't gotten any official confirmation myself. Some radio station in Seattle decided to speculate or something. Every radio station interview that I've done at the station though has been with the whole band, and they've heard me every single time, and I've never said anything like that. We're in talks with them, but nothing has been solidified." ( EDITOR'S NOTE: Contrary to his statement above, David Draiman **DID** in fact say that "it looks like" DISTURBED "are confirmed" to appear at this summer's Ozzfest. Speaking to Jolene of Seattle's 99.9 KISW on January 7, Draiman said of the band's upcoming touring plans, "It looks like at this point that we are confirmed for Ozzfest this summer, so that should be a good thing. Draiman: "It depends on where you're talking about — if I go to BLABBERMOUTH.NET, I'm probably gonna see a lot of nasty shit. Basically, you're dealing with a whole lot of nasty little fucks who will only listen to metalcore and death metal. Anything that has any kind of melody infused with the exception of NEVERMORE, which is a great band and actually has some melodic singing going on, they slam. You're talking about a maximum of 250,000 people all over the world like that. God Bless them. They can keep it. I don't give a fuck. Things like that message board are just a means of information for a lot of people. For the people who post and respond, it's like an excuse for them go ahead and lash out at somebody who is doing more with their lives than they ever will. So be it. I don't lose any sleep over it. I'm not a huge fan of Disturbed and often-times think the guy puts his foot in his mouth, I think he's dead-set right about Blabbermouth. For some unknown reason I bother to actually read what people write and post myself. The amount of negativity here is astounding and appalling.

I like disturbed.. Don't like them live.. But they're a band with inteligence... I perfer in my music something I can relate to, not JUST hatred and vioelnce (Don't get me wrong, I like that shit too!). But its retarded that alot you fuckers arn't open musically wise... I mean, you can listen to one genre of music, but than again, you look at the same type, its gets old after while, I listen to all sorts of shit.. I still am pure bred metal freak though. I don't pay attention to what people on Blabbermouth or anywhere else say is cool or not cool or whatever. I make up my own damn mind. And there are only three modern metal bands that are worth a shit to me. Tool, Slipknot and Disturbed.

I guarantee you that if they weren't touring with Nevermore, he wouldn't shield them from his comments.
I do think that Disturbed is an unfair target for some of the trolls on this board, because Disturbed never really wanted to be an outlaw metal band. They are hard rock, just like he said, and that has its place too if you're down for that sort of music. I grew up in America, so I was fed a steady diet of rock and roll, and my CD collection reflects my love for both metal and rock, and that blissful transition that we often call hard rock. Disturbed is alright by me, but he (Dave) doesn't need to talk shit about Blabbermouth in general, nomatter how vogue it may be. Of course there's nasty little fuckers on this board, but there's nasty little fuckers on every board. Some Blabbermouth posters are true music fans, the fans that will buy your CD even if we have to mail-order it because we can't find it at Best Buy, and will go to your show even if it's in a shit-hole on the other side of town. Never talk shit about your grassroots fans, especially hard rockers and metalheads.

They only want to help their image. If they were really metal, which they so strive to be, they'd understand that it's not 'un-metal' to like bands that aren't just about screaming.

It's so popular to talk shit about this webpage, but I find it at least entertaining, at most innovative and informative.
Think about it: What other page can you post comments directly under a news article? If a news headline comes out about a concert, people who were actually there can post thier own stories, or people can make shit up about it. It's an exercise in learning how to find the truth in a sea of bullshit. We should be so lucky as to find a regular news page that does the same. www.bignewsday.blogspot.com and www.metalpundit.blogspot.com are the closest things to it featuring both non-metal and metal news. If you like news, politics, and headbanging, check it out. Anonymous posts are always welcome if you prefer.
It's also extremely funny and rather typical that assholes will put down this site and say how stupid everybody else is, then continue to read and post. Face it: you're addicted, and it's not a bad thing.

Regardless of what you think of Draiman and his music, the man is absolutely right!
Let's also not forget that the average blab poster's CD collection is limited to usual death metal suspects, and not much else.
When a band like Tool gets shit on this website, it says a lot about the musical tastes of the people who post on said website!

Thats not true due to the HUGE amount of power/prog/hair metal fans on this site. I think the big problem is the lack of differentiation between each song and the very bland riffs these guys write. Its not because of singing. I've seen alot of people like bands such as Symphony X on this site (and we all know how fruity the singer of that band looks on stage but they are a good band nonetheless). The very fact that he mentions Nevermore shows exactly what the problem is. But if you wanna bring up HIM as and example it would make his statement more powerfull (I still think Him is gay and a heartagram is total bullshit).

as far as music goes. i like disturbed to an extent, they play well together and make some mediocre music i can rock to.
as far as david draiman goes, i think he is one of the goofiest motherfuckers in music. every time i hear him talk he sounds like a pretensious cock sucker. he uses a phony accent and acts like his shit doesn't stink. i get the distinct feeling he thinks his rank in the music industry is alot higher than what it actually is. perhaps he thinks of himself as a profound artist, not just a monkey with a microphone(and an erection). ive always liked reading the blabbermothers bash on everyone. its awesome and why i love the site, but i find myself getting a strange enjoyment from reading the things people write about david draiman. i wish that somehow blabbermouth could be more effective and put that dimwitted psuedo artist in his place. he is the real disgrace from chicago i could give a fuck less about anybody else from disturbed. (although strangely enough i feel like david draimans response to the blabbermouth crowd which clearly does not favor him was pretty mild overall in comparison to what some people say. and he handled it pretty professionally for being such douche bag)<--there may be a run on sentence in there and some poor punctuation for all you grammer freaks

Disturbed are not a posser band by no stretch. They got pigeon-holded into the "NU-METAL- RAP METAL" Genre by record execs. Fact is: Disturbed represented more of a Industrial-Metal sound on "The Sickness" and on "Believe" and "10k fists" it's more of a 80's Metal feel that blends the melodic and the mayhem(if you will).
Granted that Disturbed isn't the greatest band in the world, and yes a few songs do sound similar to one another, but really what band doesn't have a few tunes with simular sounds.
In this day of "Copycat Modern Rock" where everyone tries to sound like everyone else (Godsmack=Alice in Chains/ Creed= Pearl Jam) Disturbed are one of the few Original acts out today!!!! You got a Lead singer who can actually sing, and a VERY underatted Guitarist and Drummer (IMO). So yah they do bring their own unique sound, and thus should not be written off with the rest of the garbage in Mainstream Rock.

I like to listen to Disturbed a little every now and then and I do throw down about 12 bucks every time they have a new cd coming out but they are not one of my favorites. He's so right about everyone on here just loving to bash him and pretty much anyone else they don't like, when the fact is you should really just shut your fucking mouths. Yea, I don't like some bands, so when I see their news on here I scroll to the next article. Some guys just have absolutly nothing better to do than to comment on every single article possible. If you don't like a diversity of music... thats fine, but just realize millions of other people do. Jesus, are there enough comments on this thread? I hate Disturbed because they write trendy shitty music. It has nothing to do with his claim they are melodic. Helloween and Iron Maiden are far more melodic than Disturbed will ever be.

You guys are definitely proving him right, you do know that. It takes a lot of balls to talk about the whole of Blabbermouth's registered users work against a lot of bigger bands. I think you guys are probably still thinking "But he lied in the interview" Um...he said on the radio "It looks like"......that is not confirmation, as I remember Ozzy said he'll take Sabbath around to Minneapolis since he cancelled our Ozzfest date last year, but he hasn't really come through on some of that. He's confirmed people for Ozzfest and denied them before, until Ozz and Sharon actually tell the world themselves who's on Ozzfest this year, I would take even a band's words with a grain of salt.
Also, even though Disturbed may be a big band, I picked up their latest album, and there are a lot of good songs on there, just because you look at all music, especially metal, Jadedly, it is bullshit. I recall I underestimated the My Chemical Romance album I bought, thinking the only song I'd like was Helena, and I was totally wrong, I actually like them, I only heard one song, looked at it pessimistically, but it's only when you listen to the full album that you get to see how the band works. A lot of people bitched at the first Korn single from See You on the Other Side, sure, it's a little less heavy, but they lack one guitarist, it's like they went from having Iommi and Rhodes to just having Rhodes, it's definitely not gonna work as well as the full original lineup, one guitarist cannot do the work of two, I am a guitarist, I can tell you that.
And before you guys start flaming me with comments against me, think of this: When is the last time you bought an album by a band you didn't like? When is the last time you took an unbiased look at music? Just look at it that way.....before you start to butcher me for speaking my mind.

Well, this does not surprise me in the least. There are only maybe a dozen bands on here that most people can agree to liking. The fact of the matter is that noone on here could or should really have any affect on a band. Fuck them, fuck me, fuck everyone else. Play the music you want to and as long as you put 100% into it and are proud of what you are doing, it shouldn't matter. I listen to a little Disturbed I will admit. But like everyone else on here, we all have little secret shit we listen to. I'm not a huge fan but whatever, not every single person is going to like your band, or his band, or that band. Former KNAC DJ The Rack's bitchslapped me enough over why I don't like Disturbed when I probably should over the years so whatever. Draiman took it in stride in 2000 when I used to say that his singing was a second-rate "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway"-era Peter Gabriel. This is no different really. It's not like KNAC's message boards are a bastion of sane ranting either as a recent spammer boasting on the Vince Neil articles about how he dug up Skylar's corpse and had sex with it would attest.
I still don't believe that Disturbed are all that great beyond 2 or 3 songs anymore than I believe that Soulfly's "Dark Ages" is about molotov. Sorry. Prove me otherwise and I might rethink my position on this.

This thread of posts alone exceeds his point. And for whoever you are up there, he never said he invented the term "cookie monster". However, I don't think he was making reference to every single poster, there are intelligent people who read these articles to gain news and voice an opinion in a more mature way that isn't so vocab limited. I think he was talking about all the ones that call everything "GAY" and "NOT EVEN METAL" as he said. Read right.
While I am no fan of Disturbed, they played a festival I attended a few years ago and did a great job, I totally agree with him.
