CANDLEMASS Win Swedish 'GRAMMY' Award For 'Best Hard Rock' Album
- Feb. 8, 2006
|
|
CANDLEMASS won a Swedish "Grammy" award in the "Best Hard Rock" category, beating out the likes of HAMMERFALL, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, MESHUGGAH and OPETH. The Swedish doom legends were honored for their self-titled 2005 opus, which is available on Nuclear Blast Records. EVERGREY were nominated in the "Best Music DVD" category their "A Night to Remember" set, but lost to the legendary Swedish pop veterans ABBA. The "Grammis" awards ceremony was held Tuesday night, February 7 at Cirkus in Stockholm. CANDLEMASS are tentatively scheduled to record a new EP in late February with producer Andy Sneap ( NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY, MACHINE HEAD) at Polar Studios in Stockholm. The group have also scheduled a South American tour in March. Five back-catalog items from the band — "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus", "Ancient Dreams", "Doomed for Live", "Nightfall", and "Essential Doom" — are being issued in the U.S. via Candlelight in February. You obviously like your metal safe and pretty much conservative, stylistically. It's OK to not like jazz or fusion influences in heavy music,. Personally, I like to be subjected to influences and musical styles that seem to be out in left field at first. Nothing wrong with experimantation, progression and "prog".
I like my metal/hardcore crossover (S.O.D., Suicidal Tendencies, etc.) or space metal like Voivod from the 80ies, I like my metal meets fusion projects of the 90ies, like Mr. Bungle, Cynic, Atheist, Spactic Ink and yes, Meshuggah, too. I like Apocalyptica, Waltari, Fantômas, Devin Townsend, Opeth, Dream Theater, Tool...
And yes, I'm also into metal for 20+ years and I enjoy "classic" sounding stuff like Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Nevermore, Slayer, Testament, etc.
But comparing artists like Meshuggah to a lowest common denominator mass media combo like Disturbed is ridiculous. And calling Tomas Haake, one of the best and most visionary metal players, a stuttering idiot, speaks a lot about your (lack of) knowledge, 25 years into metal or not. Konkhra released their first output in 1993, Meshuggah in 1989 by the way.
If you can't tell one Meshuggah song from another, you either never heared their discography or have an attention span of an average pop music fan. That's the hard truth. But that's cool - if you like your metal simple and sing along-y, more power to you. Just don't comment on bands you don't know or understand.

Sorry, dude. Just kidding. Meshugga is pretty killer though. Well, Catch 33 is a little dull. The early stuff kills. Konkra though. Did they ever do anything worth listening to beyond Spit Or Swallow?

with a name like momshotdad, I have a tough time taking anything you might say seriously. You are obviously not too keen. Candlemass is a good band. No probs there. However, Meshuggah seems to be a little too involved for you to appreciate. Your grade school comments allude to that.
And, hairball, thanks for your admission of not being familiar with Mesh's catalog. You have valid reasoning for your dislike. If it's melody you're looking for, best to skip Meshuggah.
All that being said, as much as I love Meshuggah's music, I have found Gojira and I'm never going back. Gojira fucking destroys everything else.
GOJIRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
