GODSMACK: New Single 'Speak' Posted Online

The new GODSMACK single, "Speak", has been posted online in streaming audio format: Windows Media, Real Media. "Speak" is the first single from the group's new album, "IV", due on April 25 via Republic/ Universal. The single will be released to radio on Tuesday, February 14. In a recent interview with MTV.com, GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna had the following to say about the follow-up to 2003's "Faceless": "It's a killer record, and I'm really curious to see what the public's going to think of it. It's still GODSMACK — I don't think it's lost the integrity of what GODSMACK has built our career off. The toughness of the sound is still there. But we've expanded a little bit more. After 'Faceless', we started to spread our wings a bit and reintroduce guitar solos and stuff like that. The acoustic record [2004's 'The Other Side'] was a departure and it was very well received. It opened up a new audience for us — a lot more adults were coming to the shows, bringing their kids and having a glass of wine. That gave us a permission slip to take it to the next level. "It will perk people's eyebrows up again," he added. "The first couple of records were kind of the same record, in a sense. They were sort of bordering that metal sound and then the third record had more rock mixed into it. [ 'The Other Side'] really softened up the sound. This one is more rock and roll, and some songs are very epic, in a TOOL [-ish] sense. Some songs are like old-school GODSMACK, like 'Bad Religion'. It's going to service the core fans and introduce some new music to those fans. It's also going to recruit a bigger and broader audience, because the songwriting has matured so much." Other songtitles expected to appear on the CD include "Livin' in Sin", "Shine Down" (which comes complete with "killer harmonica") and "Voodoo Too". Definately Godsmack, It sounds like a blend of a bunch of their tunes all re-edited to make a new song. You'll be sick of it by the time mainstream radio plays the fuck out of it. The CD comes out in April?, that's way too early to release a single. Just my opinion.

Positive - Sounds good. I've listened to it a couple of times. Well produced. Very radio friendly. Very Godsmackish...a mix of the past and present.
Negative - It seems to lack a real punch in the face. Very standard with nothing truly amazing. Doesn't make me want to play it over and over.

Changes DVD is one of the better concert DVD's out there. It was produced by the same team that did Rush in Rio. The drum solo kills. I didn't really get Godsmack until I saw them live when they opened for STP. They are a solid live band. Not much for the studio stuff, but if you like a great live show and can handle a meathead crowd it's worth the money.
New song is OK. Kind of predictable Godsmack tune. Hopefully the other songs will show something new.

The production sounds awesome. Larkin rules on drums. Looking forward to this CD. And for those of you saying it sounds the same and same old crap. I bet you are the same ones who plead with Metallica to go back to their old sound. When a band has a difinitive sound that is not a bad thing. At least you know what to expect and not be surprized much like the Load CDs were to the hardcore Metallica fans. And as for the AIC comparison, it's called an influence. Get over it.

ive never been much of a godsmack fan myself. I heard the single on XM earlier today, its not that bad. I love how people on here are so closed minded about everything. I think its alrite and thats all that matters. ive seen both godsmack and korn live. I used to be a huge korn fan up to a few years ago. Anyways, ive seen godsmack only once and they put on a good show. As for korn it sounded like shit. I'm not saying there like that everywhere but ive seen korn live 3 times in chicago and they sounded horrible and were boring.

I 'll start by saying I like Godsmack, they are one of the best bands that are popular in the metal scene,even before Larkin joined.
I wonder is there a bb out there where people actually talk about the music, both pro & con?
I can see what some of the haters are saying but, I find that true with any band.
Some bands do "push the envelope" more than others.
But does that make the music any less a great work?
I'mean when I listen to the above mentioned Slayer, & then listen to Rush, I'm not sitting there thinking, "God Slayer sucks because Rush is playing circles around them"!
The thing that makes music great is what each artist brings to the table, whether it is a solo artist or a band.
& I respect both bands for what they & so many others do.
Some show their infulences in what they do more than others, but both approaches have merit.
As for the song, after 3 listens...
Well lets start with the production;
It is definatly top notch.
Song structure;
Not complex, but it grooves & flows very well. As for how it compares to the rest of their catalog, well the band does have a very natural flow from the first album through Faceless, & this shows the potential for natural growth from the band.
Lyrics;
Didn't find them on the internet, not suprised but, if you release the song realese the lyrics & tabs (yeah Fuck the RIAA & their copywrite infringement rederick, tabs & lyrics are not infringement when being used to pay tribute to your influences as so many bands have before you. maybe go after all the bands putting food on your table for all those years of copywrite infringement, yeah I thought not.)
The band itself is very tight, I have not seen them live but I do have the Changes DVD & it does Fuckin Kick!
I also talked to Sully off the air when they opened for 'Tallica on the last tour.
He was cool, was doing cartwheels because he was talking to a fan?
No, & I wouldn't expect him to. I have met some Artists/Bands & the coolest thing about them is when they are themselves & not palying "Rockstar".
In Sully's case he was cool.
Maybe if those of us who love this kind of music &, respect it as a true art form cna find a decent bb someday.

On topic, I think this new single is good. I like the riffs... but the drumming takes the fucking cake imo. Just awesome.
And although its true that Godsmack has a typical sound that they seem to stick to, I think that might just be an example of staying true to yourself. Dont change for others..
I'd definitely go check Godsmack out if they ever come to the Netherlands.

It will be good for mainstream radio. They are a decent band. A lot better than RAP or all the other crap that they cram down the American public's throats. I like more extreme metal myself. It sounds like the vocallist went to the James Hetfield school of vocals.

I enjoy it because it has that similar sound to their self-titled. It is repetitive but it still works. I have listened to all of the CD's from start to finish and, I like every song on every CD. That is why they are my favorite band. Saying stupid crap like, "Godsmack's Gay", is stupid. Grow up. Go out and get a fuckin' life. For god sakes, I think you all should be locked up until you die of hunger. That is all I have to say. If you have any comments, please post them.
