JUDAS PRIEST Guitarist: It's Important For Us To Show 'Angel Of Retribution' Was Not A One-Off
- Feb. 14, 2006
|
|
Garry Sharpe-Young of Rockdetector.com recently conducted an interview with JUDAS PRIEST guitarist Glenn Tipton. An excerpt from the chat follows: Rockdetector.com: So you took that short break after the tour to get these [solo] records out and now you're back to thinking about new JUDAS PRIEST songs? Tipton: "Yes. I took that window to get these albums out and now we're all back in writing mode for the next JUDAS PRIEST album. We're going to be totally focused on that for some time. It's important for us to show our fans 'Angel of Retribution' was not a one-off." Rockdetector.com: I spoke to KK [ Downing] a few days back and he said quite boldly that JUDAS PRIEST was going to radically overhaul the set list next time around and play a lot of songs that have either never been played before or rarely performed. That created quite a stir and some of the feedback from fans was they they thought this might be a desire of KK's that might not be pushed through to reality. So, I have to ask you the same question. Are we going to see a whole new set next time? Tipton: "Yes. We have decided that's what we want to do. When 'Angel of Retribution' came out we needed to do two things, promote the new music and remind everybody what JUDAS PRIEST was all about. Obviously we have a history there that has fortunately given us hit singles and particular songs, like 'Victim of Changes', 'Electric Eye', 'Metal Gods' and 'Beyond The Realms Of Death' that our fans keep voting as classics so we needed to put the focus on that. At the same time we did somehow find some space to put in a few songs people might not have expected to hear too. I think what happened was that we really began to notice on this tour in particular that people were coming up to us after the show and asking for their favourite songs. They've always done that and it's great to know we have made albums that can be appreciated in different ways by different people, but this time it was very noticable, all the way through the tour." Rockdetector.com: What kind of songs were they asking for? Tipton: "Just about everything! 'Rock Hard, Ride Free', 'Rapid Fire', 'Steeler', 'Jawbreaker' — the list is endless. It did get us thinking though. How can we do this?" Rockdetector.com: You have enough strong tracks that you might rarely or never have played to still put on a great show with a lot of light and shade. Tipton: "We do. Choosing a set list next time around is going to be incredibly difficult. There are some songs from 'Angel of Retribution' we still need to give justice to and deserve to be heard live. We'll have the new album too of course. Then we can start thinking about putting in a different mix so that we can include a lot of different tracks. We're thinking that our fans really need to hear us play a lot of these songs before we retire, whenever that might be. It's a kind of mission impossible really but we have decided we are going to make the time to put this together." Rockdetector.com: KK said that the band can play every song from every album. Tipton: "We can unfortunately! So it's going to make the choice very hard. I think we've proved that on the 'Angel of Retribution' tour. Rob is singing songs better than ever before and musically, a lot of PRIEST music is very challenging but we're still really enjoying it. That's really important for us to know the fans see us onstage and know the passion is real." Reaad the entire interview at Rockdetector.com.

Priest still rule but this is just wishful thinking. He's still got an amazing mid-range but struggles on stuff like Painkiller.
I'm not bashing, it's inevitable that he'll have to adapt his style more as he gets older and loses range and he's done this pretty well so far.
Anyway, can't wait for a new setlist, really would rather hear Rock Hard Ride Free than Living after Midnight.

Great comeback. Can't wait to see what they do next!
Also VERY pleased to hear that they're going to switch up the setlist. This is something that all veteran acts should do... too many of these bands keep playing the same songs over and over again. Variety is a good thing.

I'm really geeked about this potential setlist of rareties. I'd like to hear (in no particular order): Let Us Prey Starbreaker Rock Hard Ride Free Jawbreaker Never Satisfied Tyrant (I know Rob did it in 2000) Rock Forever Evening Star Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise Don't Go You Say Yes On The Run Screaming For Vengeance Reckless Ram It Down Hard As Iron Machine Man Wheels of Fire

First I read that Aerosmith could be ditching "safe mode" on the next album & getting back to what they do best. Now JP is talking about revamping the set to not only include songs they haven't played in years but adding in songs they never played live. I hope all of the veteran bands take notice!

Angel Of Retribution was fucking awesome. Had some weak tracks, but most albums do. It also had fucking Demonizer and Hellrider...which fucking shred.
If you can't see those two tracks as good metal, then you need to get your ass back to listening to slipknot....and stfu in priest threads.

I saw em back on the Painkiller tour, & saw Rob w/his own band "Halford" open up for Iron Maiden awhile back... Rob doesn't have as much stage pressence as he once did, but his VOX is still KILLER!! I'd love to hear em' do some OLD tunes like: Killing Machine, Grinder, United, Tyrant, Sinner, Disident Agressor, & Rocka Rolla!!!!!!!!! HELL YEAH!!!!!!

it was decent Glenn annd nothing more than half decent and perhaps overproduced. Far from Screaming or Defenders but ofcourse In Glenn's mind he probably thinks his own solo record is grammy material. Here is an idea loose the childish lyrics we-re not all 15 " Hellions the steed Blood's on the wing Claws set to slice Vengeance he'll bring "
oh please....
Another thing Halford is not singing better than ever that's another crock of shit. Rob is singing pretty decent but he has loads of trouble hitting some notes and opts for a lower range note here and there, bends over, bends back, squats whatever it takes to crank out a note that would have been a piece of cake back in the late 80's or 90's just generally fakes what he can but that's understandable. Anyone arguing otherwise should really listen and watch closely and get offf his dick. I'm talking in the live situations in the studio hes a "tad" better. I'd like to hear him do songs like The Sentinel live I think he wouldn't "touch that one with a ten foot pole " To add to Phonics Monkey's list:
Let Us Prey Starbreaker Rock Hard Ride Free Jawbreaker Never Satisfied Tyrant (I know Rob did it in 2000) Genocide Dissident Agressor Deliverin' The Goods Saints In Hell Devil's Child Rock Forever Evening Star Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise Don't Go You Say Yes On The Run Screaming For Vengeance Reckless Ram It Down Hard As Iron Machine Man Wheels of Fire Heading Out To The Highway Exciter Screaming For Vengeance
I love Priest, but I'm just not gonna buy the ususal glorification specially coming from the band members. Come back for my afternoon session its when I really let them have it....

Add the fast version of Diamonds and Rust to your setlist. And Tyrant. I'm begging. And I'll probably post this request every time there's a news item about this, even though I can't imagine anyone from the band reading these comments. So why will I keep posting this? Who the hell knows.

Angel Of Retribution is one of the most overrated albums of recent years. That piece of junk has nothing to do with Painkiller, Defenders Of The Faith and Stained Class. Don't believe the self-glorifying Priest site or those tunnelvision Priest fans! Priest was a good band once, but after 1990 they have released shit only!

when it comes to such legands as priest, they should continue to open the show with the hellion and electric eye thats classic but there are so many songs to chose from from the 70s to 1990 angel was an ok album but i thought they could have done better. i would rather not hear anymore of that live next time. hit stained glass do invader/ white heat red hot or saints are in hell, then go back to starbreaker from 77 and a couple of others from sad wings hit rocka rolla with maybe one for the road or never satisfied then move on and do a couple from killing machine like the title track or delivering the goods ( not hell bent for leather for the 100th time) after that there is so much they can do from steel, point, screaming ( id love to hear devils child) , defenders,( fuck turbo) and 2 say from ram it down and painkiller, that would be the ultimate priest show for me

some things like the notes that a person hits are not a matter of opinion. these things are fact. if anyone else has ever hit the notes Rob halford did on rising in the east and put it out on a live dvd, TELL ME ABOUT IT because i will go out and buy that dvd on sight.
i think rob halford did an amazing job of painkiller on the dvd. i've never seen them live and that's the only time i've ever heard them do painkiller and it was totally kick ass. it was my favorite moment on the dvd, when he slumps over the monitor...man that ruled. i liked it when he pulled his coat up in touch of evil too. like a vampire.

I saw Priest last year and Halford is definitively not as lively as in 84 but he can still do great...we should be happy for the fact that they are still hanging arround.
Rock hard ride free is the song with the best begining ever! Put it on the setlist!!!!
They should put more stuff from Defenders of the faith like Jawbreaker, Freewheel burning and the sentinel.
Defenders of the faith is an all time classic alongside with Pyromaia and Fatal Portrait

He's my favorite guitarist of all time. Perfect mix of technical ability and feel.
Angel of Retribution is a classic. Of all their studio albums I would rank it at number 5 or 6. The only Priest album that qualifies as bad is Demolition. Jugulator has stupid lyrics (except for Cathedral Spires, those are good lyrics) but good music. Turbo is a good glam album. Rocka Roll is a good hard rock album. Sad Wings is an unqualified masterpiece of art that should be owned by anyone who calls themself a music fan, whether they like metal or not.
I was disappointed by the performance of Painkiller on the new DVD. Overall, the concert is excellent but Painkiller didn't come through for me. When they played it live in St. Paul shortly after filming the DVD it was great, though. Painkiller on 'Live in London' was killer, too.
