KERRANG!, METAL HAMMER, ROCK SOUND, CLASSIC ROCK: U.K. Rock Magazines' Sales Figures Revealed
- Feb. 16, 2006
|
|
Michael Byrne of BrandRepublic.com is reporting that the battle between the U.K. weekly rock magazines has reignited as NME and Kerrang! almost tie on sales, with the IPC music weekly putting on 4.3% over a six-month period to record a circulation of 76,792, while Kerrang! piled on a whopping 18% to hit 76,165. Kerrang!'s closing in on NME in the ABC ( Audit Bureau of Circulation) figures for July-December 2005 comes despite a redesign of the IPC title in September. With just a little more than 600 copies between the two and Kerrang!'s impressive 23.2% year-on-year increase in circulation, the rivalry between the two remaining weekly titles seems certain to continue. In the monthly market, Emap's Q remains the market leader at 168,547, a period increase of 5.2%. Sister Emap title Mojo was up 5.2% to 120,530, retaining its lead over IPC's music and movies magazine Uncut, which has stabilized at 110,052, up just 37 copies up on its January-June 2005 figure. Future's music monthlies Classic Rock and Metal Hammer also fared well, increasing 12.8% to 50,027 and 9.5% to 44,047 respectively. ABC average monthly/weekly figures ( NME and Kerrang! are the only weeklies on the list) for July-December 2005 (includes export copies): 01. Q - 168,547 02. Mojo - 120,530 03. Uncut - 110,052 04. NME - 76,792 05. Kerrang! - 76,165 06. Total Guitar - 52,183 07. Classic Rock - 50,027 08. Metal Hammer - 44,047 09. The Word - 34,753 10. Guitarist - 29,152 11. Rock Sound - 23,027 12. Guitar Techniques - 20,561 13. Rhythm - 10,434 NOTE: Magazines like Zero, Big Cheese, Zero Tolerance and Terrorizer aren't members of the ABC so they don't have "official" sales figures.

... but I would say that there is no one magazine "better" than any other, nor do any magazines "suck"... because everyone likes different types of music. I prefer Metal Hammer and Terrorizer because I like metal, people who read NME and Kerrang probably like indie and emo.

"Metal Hammer is Toadrunner's unofficial promotional rag."
So TRUE!!!!!!
IT seems every other page is a roadrunner artist!!
The best mags are defo, Terrorizer and Zero Tolerance imo, although they can both be hard to find...
Don't really get any magazines any more though... as Pestilence said.. theres the internet now.

Kerrang had a sales lift similar to this 4-5 years ago when nu-metal was at its peak (sales wise, not musically) but when people got sick of nu-metal and its replacement genre (metalcore etc) wasn't commercial sounding enough the kiddies stopped reading. For now emo is the new nu-metal, a trend that will get marketed, cookie-cutter'ed and bled dry til kiddies get sick of it and look for a new sound - then Kerrap! will see its circulation dwindle once more. Then a band with a fresh (but highly marketable and commercial) sound will explode onto the scene, sell shitloads, everyone and their dog will copy this sound Keerang will doubtless hype this aforementioned 'sound' and the cycle starts afresh.

Do you think Kerrang may feature popular bands for justifiable reasons? Do you think that they might just do it to make money? Wow, imagine being able to see the big picture and acknowledge the bottom line: they are businesses and they need to make money. Featuring popular bands = popular magazine. The real issue is whether they feature small bands where they can - Kerrang do this to some degree, Metal Hammer do this - read the magazines, you're just choosing to ignore that fact to boost your 'I'm down with commercialism bullshit'. It's about balance and I believe Metal Hammer certainly strike it.

Matthew Kiichi Heafy was born in Iwakuni, Japan on January 26th 1986. He was raised in Orlando Florida. Matt joined the metalcore band Trivium when the band members witnessed him singing “Self Esteem” by The Offspring at a school talent show. He proved to be an able vocalist and is also skilled with the guitar. As a result, he became the lead guitarist for the band

Terrorizer's Figures are about the 8000 mark if anyones interested.
Kerrang is a toilet read these days and little more, except a manual for Peados to find out how to start conversations with 11 year olds!
Metal Hammer is, for all (as someone pointed out so well already) It's very obvious Bias towards Roadrunner and Nuclear Blast Bands (Hey, if you spent that much advertising with someone, you'd be looking for a few Kickbacks too!) Their Subterranea and New Faces scetoin are always worth a Gander.
Zero Tolerance is a Quality read, really in-depth interviews, not the usual 'what's your favourite colour' crap.
I'm quite a fan of BW & BK, which I think is a US Mag? Certainly better than Metal Edge, but that might be just cause I don't content with the US way of laying out some of your magazines, Old Comic style with really cheap paper and smudged black ink...

"Kerrang!'s closing in on NME in the ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulation) figures for July-December 2005 comes despite a redesign of the IPC title in September."
So that explains why those two magazines are practically interchangeable now and absolutely suck save for the odd review and the letters section anymore.

I totally agree with you, my post wasn't bashing Kerrang as such - like the record indusrty, the magazine industry is a business and has to push what will generate the most sales (popular bands) - i was merely pointing out that the mag now follows the cycles of the rock world - when a rock trend sells, so does Kerrang - when said trend is old, their circulation drops. However, that said, I cannot stand the fact that Kerrang has a music channel that has never played a Slayer track (even on the graveyard slot)

i used to buy Kerrang! in the 80's-early 90's. it was pretty good back then. i saw some mid 90's editions of it, and they were only covering what was big in the states then[Marilyn Manson, etc].....man, i miss the 80's. even the stuff that sucked back then is more entertaining than the shit that's out there now.

Yes, you've got a point there for certain and I wasn't aiming it at you - I think we've got a similar viewpoint on this. It's a shame that they fail to recognise landmark bands in that way - I think Kerrang TV is a wasted opportunity. The 25th Anniversary UK Tour was a case in point - Aiden and Bullet For My Valentine! They've made it clear who they're aiming for - the target readership age seems to have shifted and has split new and older rock/metal fans. I can see why people who used to buy the mag might be pissed off - I used to - but there you go...

Terrorizer is the only one I read - it's an excellent read and the demo disc usually has a lot of good bands with new songs.
The others (Kerrang in particular) suck dick and are for 12 year olds.

I really can’t understand your beef with Metal Hammer or Kerrang! why can’t all you grumpy trousers say ‘Well Done!’ and thank The Dark Lord that there are so many of us out there embracing rock music rather than The Ordinary Arcade Monkeys etal that the mainstream media seem to ram down our collective throat at every opportunity? You should be thankful that our music has an outlet in the press rather than being dictated to by the likes of the NME.
You gayers!
