JERRY CANTRELL: 'Not Many' Singers Can Pull Off ALICE IN CHAINS Material

Launch Radio Networks reports: The surviving members of ALICE IN CHAINS are regrouping for at least one live performance and perhaps many more, according to the band's publicist. The group has confirmed its appearance at the Nova Rock festival in Austria in mid-June, with more dates in Europe and North America being discussed. It has not yet been revealed who will sing lead vocals for the group. William DuVall, a member of ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell's solo touring band, will take the mic on March 10 when the group appears on a taping of the VH1 show, "Decades Rock Live!". It is not clear if DuVall will join ALICE IN CHAINS for any other appearances.
DuVall has performed ALICE IN CHAINS songs on tour with Cantrell, who told Launch that he was impressed with the way DuVall handled the material. "William's really a great singer, and he really did that stuff well," Cantrell said. "There are not too many cats that pull that stuff off, and he's one of the few that can. Very talented guy."
Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney performed together for the first time in nine years at a February 18, 2005 tsunami relief benefit in Seattle, Washington, playing with several different singers. ALICE IN CHAINS vocalist Layne Staley died in April of 2002.
The Nova Rock show will also feature METALLICA, GUNS N' ROSES, TOOL, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, HARD-FI and more.
The "Decades Rock Live!" taping, which will take place at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey, is a tribute to Seattle rockers HEART. A spring air date is expected to be announced soon.

Is there anywhere on the web you can hear a bit of this DuVall singing AIC material. If he is as good as Jerry says he is, I would definately be interested in checking them out, if they do in fact tour as AIC. Is Cardboard Vampyres (however you spell it) the band he sings in with Cantrell? I passed up a chance to see them in Milwaukee this summer. Now I'm thinking I regret it.

Alice In Chains....one of the FEW "alternative" bands I actually dig! Jerry C. fuckin' rocks and I really hope they do this RIGHT....Filling Layne's shoes is gonna be hard, but it CAN BE DONE! I'll be keeping an eye on this!

Jerry should stop looking for people who SOUND like Staley, there are plenty of guys out there that could more than pull it off. Try 5!!! Basically everything they did except sap (an ep)
and nothing safe (glorified compilation).
Layne's definitely not dickinson, but might as well be the dickinson of his genre/generation. He could go like no one else when he wanted to (love hate love for instance), and unfortunately that will be he and the band's legacy, that they had flashes of brilliance but ultimately did less than they should have.
As far as classifying the band, in an interview during the end of the band's run, layne said that he considered them a metal band, despite the jar of flies/unplugged content of later years, and DIED and Get Born Again showed a return to those metal roots with their final output, so I figure if a band considers themselves Metal, that's good enough for me.

I saw Comes With the Fall open for Jerry and play with Jerry on the Degradation Trip tour. William has a great harmonizing voice. I though he did a great job filling in for Layne's parts. Maybe he's no Maynard but give him a chance he's a great guy who cares about the fans and I think its the perfect choice for Layne's vocals. check out cwtf.com their live 2002 cd is awesome

although i prefer AIC myself. just like MARS pointed out, AIC could do no wrong with whatever they wanted to play. they could play hard nasty stuff like "rain when i die" and "hate to feel" (no pun intended), they could also be melodic and haunting like "rotten apple" and "dont follow"

William does and will do justice to the AIC songs. He's not going to tread on Layne's memories. He pays respect. He's been singing AIC songs with JC since 01. They toured 01-02 together.
Call me crazy but I thought all these hard core AIC people who are weeping and wailling and nashing their teeth about this would have at least gone to see JC on tour back then. They would have already known that this is a good thing.

I could care less about Jerry's new solo band he's calling AIC. Lets face it...at the end of AIC w/ Layne it was clearly about played out. This is just a new vehicle to showcase Jerry's talent which he posesses in abundance...AIC it isn't.
ANd about a dozen singers went on to copy Layne with much success. Its not that hard a thing to do. Doing it grilled to the gills on H is another story.

how about this ''in house band'' everynight...CHUCK SHULDINER--vocals/guitar.......PIGGY--guitar.....ROGER PATTERSON-bass......and STEVE McDONALD--drummer for the last GORGUTS album))))........id die now to go see that for etenity......as well as PAUL BALOFF being there just because he PAUL BALOFF.....as far as ALICE IN CHAINS being a hardcore death/speed metal guy,,, i always liked AIC's music.....the only thing coming from seattle that was labeled ''grunge'' that was worth listening to musically....i always like STALEY/CANTRELL's voices together especially on my faveorite album by them DIRT......the unplugged shit was great too.......wouldnt mind hearing new shit from them if they returned to the dark overtones that made up most of the DIRT album..........

The guy can sing incredibly well and I respect him as the musician he is in CWTF.... but I dont find him to complete Jerry's vocals very well. Their voices just dont match.

it's funny seeing molotov type something besides Meshuggah althought it was still there haha. Both great bands by the way.
but he should just get his shit together and play Alice in Chains songs that everyone wants to hear again. Layne's irreplacable but we still want to see Alice live! If we want Layne, we'll listen to the cds or watch the dvds. I just want to have a chance to see one of my favorite bands live.

AIC wasn't ever the most played band on the radio back in the early nineties.
They are a little more so now because of Layne's death.
Alice In Chains NEVER got the recognition they deserved in that era, and I'm glad they didn't because they could've been easily spoiled. They were nominated for Grammys and MTV awards numerous times but never ever won anything. I remember one year Layne didn't bother to show up.
They were way ahead of there time. Way ahead. And I'm glad I caught on then. You just had to witness it they were so awesome in concert .

alice in chains was the best band of the 90's...and the record layne recorded with mad season,is a fuckin master piece....the song river of deceit you can feel his pain in that song....this reunion is either for shits and giggles or for dead presidents$$$....if anybody should sing it should only be jerry....i hope this isn't a train wreck.....

As obsessed as I was (am) with Alice in Chains when I was younger, I think my obsession with Layne Staley was that much stronger. There was just something captivating about his voice. At the time, I thought it was so odd to have a guy with such an amazing voice being associated with this type of dark music. As I began to obsess over him and his band, I realized that this obsession would likely never end. Up until Layne died, I still held out hope that I would somehow once again hear new Alice in Chains, and more importantly, new Layne Staley. But with him gone, I really can't get too excited about an "Alice in Chains" reunion. I'd be very interested to hear what new material the remaining members could come up with, but the more I think about it, the more depressed I get. Even if the new material is great, all I'd think about is how much greater it would be if Layne was still around.
And I'm well aware that Jerry Cantrell was the primary songwriter and wrote much of the lyrics, but Layne made the songs what they were. He conveyed these emotions in ways that Jerry Cantrell never could have with just his voice. Alice in Chains will always be my favorite band both vocally AND musically, but Layne was what made them so special.

Well, if it is true that "success is the mortal enemy of talent", you should be really happy. Most of the shit bands you mention on this board will never have to worry about their "talent" coming under fire, because no one wants to buy an album that is totally fucking unlistenable.
I, for one, consider myself fortunate to have been exposed to a lot of "untalented" metal bands that never figured out how to defecate musically and sell their atonal bowel movements to 5-6 dipshits in Europe.

Not many people can pull off Alice In Chains vocals b/c they're NOT fucking Layne. And in my opinion, it's a true disrespect to Layne & they shouldn't continue with Alice In Chains. Layne WAS Alice In Chains.

Kull: Layne Staley wasn't exactly rich when he was still alive and in AIC. Otherwise he probably would have used the money to go to detox and kick his heroin addiction. Pete Doherty's barely a fraction of the singer Layne was and he's been to detox more often than one can count. Then again, having a successful model for a girlfriend helps in Doherty's case.
And no offence but Laibach are fucking awful. Sorry. I'd sooner find talent in Babyshambles and I hate that band even more.
