THE HAUNTED Guitarist Is In No Rush To Play OZZFEST Again - Feb. 25, 2006
Australia's The Metal Forge recently conducted an interview with THE HAUNTED guitarist Patrik Jensen. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

On playing last year's Ozzfest:

Jensen: "It was very hot. Also very expensive — $75,000 just to be able to play, which [comes out to] $3,000 per show which is kind of a lot for just playing 20 minutes. Sometimes, when you have a rotating schedule, you play between nine in the morning and one in the afternoon and if you play at nine, then nobody is gonna be there anyway so you pay $3,000 to play in front of 300 kids. So you pay $10 per kid you play in front of. So that sucked sometimes. But it was cool to hang out with all the people that were playing that festival. Although I don't think [last] year's Ozzfest was really as good for the touring bands as the previous Ozzfests were for those bands because previous Ozzfests, the bands were so much more diverse. On this tour of Ozzfest that we did, there were four Swedish bands and then there were maybe four more American bands that sounded Swedish. So you didn't stand out. I don't think we got our monies back on that tour."

On whether he would be keen to play Ozzfest again:

Jensen: "No, I wouldn't. My gut feeling or suggestion when we do discuss stuff like this in the band would be an absolute 'No!' That's not because of the audience or anything. It's just that it's not feasible at all. When we first got the offer, we really jumped on it because Ozzfest is the thing to do in the U.S. In hindsight, with all the bands being kinda similar, it wasn't any good. You blend in just as much as you do on a smaller tour because there's so many tours. There was no kinda high profile on doing the Ozzfest because the bands were too similar."

On the progress of the songwriting sessions for the follow-up to 2004's "rEVOLVEr":

Jensen: “It's been going well. We're trying kinda of new formula for THE HAUNTED because both me and Anders [Björler, guitar] have moved from Gotherburg. So I'm back in my old hometown now just because of a new girlfriend and I'm back close to my parents after my Dad was really ill in 2005 and I had to go home early from the CRADLE OF FILTH tour. So I'm here and it's only a three-hour drive to Gothernburg anyway and Anders is in another city closer to Stockholm which might be four hours from Gothenburg. So we're sitting and writing on our computers. When we do meet up in Gothenburg, it's not like I show the band a riff and then we try it. It's more like, I have these riffs and it's kind of a song. We come with our CDs and play 'em. Of course we can re-arrange them or whatever but it's kind of a different approach which makes it all kind of exciting. We've been playing music and writing music for so long, that actually any kind of change is fun. So, if I come up with a riff that sounds stupid, I don't have to convince anyone to try and play it because I can just add the drums and bass and whatever and it might be easier for the other guys to see where I'm going with it. So actually, we might have a more diverse album just because it's easier to show the other guys what the vision with the ideas or riffs is."

On what the fans can expect from THE HAUNTED's fifth studio album:

Jensen: "A lot of the guys want to try something different. I know that Anders really likes the style that he was going with 'My Shadow' and so on. I'm the kinda guy who likes the three-and-a half-minute catchy 'Hate Song' stuff… the '99's. So I'm probably gonna stick with that just because I love it. I mean, if you listen to WITCHERY, which is 98% me, that is the formula. I don't think that people will find the stuff that I'm writing for THE HAUNTED to be too far off from what I've done before."

One of the things that make them great is the change up songs like My Shadow, Burnt To a Shell and Abysmal from their last release. Don't go all speed - we have Witchery for that! This band should be huge - Sweden appears to have limitless talent.

Main stage acts don't have to pay to play Ozzfest. Especially Headliners/Co-Headliners. They get paid salaries. Iron Maiden made like $125,000-$225,000 for each gig they played.

The fee is only for second stage bands who want exposure.

i'll just say to him.....i was one of those very, very few who was front row at their totally bullshit 9, 9:30am slot as first band of the day at Ozzfest last summer in Clarkston MI. was so completely not fair to have to see them with virtually no crowd response since NO ONE WAS HARDLY IN THE FUCKING VENUE YET. not fair for a band of their caliber to start off at 9, 9:30 am that day, and have completely inferior shithead bands like Wicked Wisdom and Between The Buried And Me have way better slots when everyone was around.....not fucking fair. i'm definitely going to see them on a REAL fucking tour somewhere down the line in Michigan to make up for this travesty.

A few years back The Haunted were on Earache. If you weren't such a dumbass you'd realise that Earache is a crap label that fucks their bands at every chance they get. Earache wouldn't front the money for Andy Sneap, end of story. Now The Haunted are on Century Media, who lent them the $75,000 to play Ozzfest. Better label, more support for their bands, but big mistake to spend it on Sharon's bullshit.

THE HAUNTED FUCKING PWN ALL... and if you're too dumb to see that its your loss!!!

Man a lot of band's were not happy with Ozzfest this year either because of the crowd or that it was just so much money. I will agree that the crowd SUCKED ASS. Everyone just kinda stood there, everyone seemed pissed off when you would started to move at all or yell. I was the only one in my entire SECTION that was headbanging and singing along with In Flames and Black Label Society everyone else was just sitting. Both bands pointed me out and said something along the lines of "at least someone is enjoying the music". Hopefully Gigantour is going on again, I missed that and I wanted to see Megadeth and Nevermore soooo bad.

yea this is more proof as to why ozzfest sucks.u shouldnt have to pay to tour thats garbage.its only a mratter of time before sounds of the underground and gigantour take over ozzfest's audience completly.as for the haunted anxious to hear the new stuff.revolver was a step in the right direction,it had typical haunted songs but also some more experimental straight ahead rockers too.which is a good thing.the only good haunted albums are the ones with dolving.and yes witchery does own!!!

all you dumb asses are lame, you have to pay to be on any good tour with any band that means a shit....your record label pays for you to get on the tour, and like said before mainstage bands at ozzfest get paid, only side stage bands have to pay to play, and the side stage is a rotating schedule so one morning you might play at 9am the next day you might play at 12pm....but i guess all you know it all fools really know whats up right? that you, especially DamageIncorporate, are not stupid enough to think that Metallica (who would be a main stage headliner) would have to pay Sharon $75,000. Headliners GET PAID to be on Ozzfest. The young bands PAY to get on because thats EXPOSURE, therefore they SELL MORE RECORDS.

You little dumbasses are getting mad because you think Iron Maiden paid to be on Ozzfest. Do some research.

Several things:

I totally agree with you, The Haunted and Ozzfest for that matter, is nothing more than metalcore fest featuring the gayest trends in faux-metal.

HOWEVER, I have to disagree. Arch Enemy with Liiva is an awesome band. Burning Bridges is one of my favorite CDs of all time. But I guess that's just a matter of opinion.

7 string guitars aren't nu-metal. You're complaining about people making false assumptions of your character, yet you do it just the same. There are tons of godly bands that use 7 string guitars that AREN'T nu metal or tuffcore.

There's nothing wrong with downloading. In fact, people who do just the opposite these days, are tools. There needs to be a change in how music is sold, and the music industry is too thick-headed and greedy to see that. In a few years the CD will become extinct.

get your fuckin heads out of your mothers assholes and listen up kiddies cuz i am only gonna say this once.

ozzfest charges smaller bands on the second stage 75,000 to join the tour. that money is used for the double promo cds that are handed out FREE to everyone that enters the venue. some of the money is used for promotion on radio, newspapers, tv spots and all that shit. whatever is left goes towards sharons new titties and the removal of one of kelly's many chins.

this money DOES NOT come from the band. It is from the labels. It will be recouped (for all the ignorant that means you will slowly pay it back to the label with record sales .. if your record shit bags than the label never gets the loot but the band wont have to pay it either.) and is usually looked at by the label as a promotional cost.

the bands that headline second stage get paid a GRIP of money. the bands on the mainstage get paid an UNREAL amount of money. six figures a night for headliners. all you whiny bitches wont see six figures after thirty years of mowing your neighbors lawn.

fuck off .. it's the truth.

Firstly , there is nothing wrong with downloading. But whats the fuck having a songs without the intended artwork which comes with the CD. If the band wants you to download songs theyll make albums available online for price. Am i one of the only people who thinks downloading doesnt support bands and is just for lazy fake fans. Your not a fan if you just downloaded all of a bands music, anyone can do that. Your certainly more of a credible fan if you go out and buy the cd's when they come out, or get some back catalogue.
I like to have the cd in my collection.

To put things straight, ozzfest has always charged 2nd stage bands about 75.000$ to be on the tour, in 2003 it was exactly the same. So paying to play is nothing new, and it happens on loads of tours.

It is a shit though, but it's just another way music is a bussiness where you get screwed from all directions.

And getting exposure is a good thing you know, it helps sell records which helps you to make another record and to keep putting music out, wether people like it or not.

I didn't want to go to last year's Ozzfest but with lawn tickets at $16.00 how could you go wrong. What a waste of money! Started at 9 a.m. with all poser bands who all sounded the same. 100 degrees in Chicago watching bands I never listen to. Sound system sucked, not loud enough and young kids just there just to be seen.Rob Zombie was the only act worth listening to. Left after Zakk Wlyde. I couldn't sit thru it.

Went to Gigantour weeks later at same venue and what a difference. Great sound system, no poser bands and people that came to hear music and great bands. Stick with Gigantour.

$75,000 sounds like alot but in reality of the music business, it's not very much. Look at how much labels throw at MTV during Headbangers ball, all the metal mags., etc. etc.. I any of you knew how much those mags. ads cost you would shit. You little local coupon book that comes in the mail costs those business's usuall a solid $1,500 plus an issue, so that should give some of you an idea of what a major magizine would cost. So $75,000 to go play for a few months in the summer with big crowds 90% of time seems pretty fair.
