SEPULTURA Frontman Says 'Dante XXI' Will Appeal To A Wider Audience - Feb. 28, 2006
John Foxworthy of Garage Radio recently conducted an interview with SEPULTURA frontman Derrick Green. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Garage Radio: What would you say to those who tell you that thrash is a dead genre or just noise?

Derrick: "That's okay. I mean, that's the one thing that I really like about underground music. It's that not everyone likes it. You have to open your mind and investigate. You have to read lyrics to really know what the person is saying. There has to be something that really grabs you about it. I think it's great that people can have their own opinions. I think it's these opinions that really feed the fire of wanting to do something different. At least when you hear people saying, 'I'm not really into that,' and I'm like, 'Yeah ... you don't have to be, because there are a lot of people that are.' It's not the type of music where you're trying to please everybody. I think it's something you do foremost for personal satisfaction, where people relate to it and it becomes better. It becomes something flowing."

Garage Radio: When you hooked up with SEPULTURA, did you feel like you had some big shoes to fill?

Derrick: "Definitely. Consider the fact that they had so many years as a band ... and so many albums. They were from the same country with the same language. They had time to grow and evolve. They didn't start off as like SEPULTURA just starting off. It's like they started off as people saying, 'God, this is horrible!' like they did in Brazil. People weren't listening to that style of music. They had all these different factors. It wasn't just the singer. It was much more than that, because the band has always been 'the band,' not just one person. I felt this immense amount of responsibility and I think that this happened gradually to really grow into it because I was lucky enough to not really know how big it was ... I think that in that way it was really lucky for me. As time went on I think that we all knew it would take time to evolve and grow. It's really like starting over again with a different combination of people and just getting used to playing with a different structure."

Garage Radio: Besides the conceptual idea, musically SEPULTURA's made huge leaps. Do you feel like, on this album ["Dante XXI"], you guys have totally evolved as a band?

Derrick: "Definitely. In every aspect. It's the first time we've actually produced the album ourselves. We brought in orchestra strings and horns and really wanted to create the soundtrack vibe, the vibe of the book ... the sinister feeling and I think we pushed ourselves in every aspect. We had no idea what people were gonna think. We were here in Sao Paulo, working away in the studio with this crazy idea. I think that's the best part, not thinking so much about the outside. We could have told people ahead of time they're just like, 'What? That's nuts!' I think the fact that we're able to trust ourselves and have that confidence really shows that we've evolved."

Garage Radio: You've never been into catering to the mainstream. I'm thinking this album's going to appeal to a wider audience than SEPULTURA's used to. Do you think this'll attract a lot of new fans?

Derrick: "Definitely. I think that's the one thing that's so exciting about growing with the band. There were all these new fans coming about, as far as really young kids. And, for a band that's older ... like 22 years ... there aren't that many bands out there with that many years that are able to attract younger fans. That's amazing to me! I love that factor, because I remember being that age and being a fan of music. I know how exciting it can be. I've actually watched it grow as far as younger fans ... especially in Brazil ... and I think it will attract, I hope it really does attract a lot of people."

Finally someone in the metal scene like Derrick who is actually intelligent and respectful and not a fucking moron like Kerry King or Bruce Dickinson. We need more people like Derrick. Fuck what everyone else thinks, just make the music you want to make. The fans dont know shit anyway, thats why they are the fans and not the musicians.

I think there's always going to be 2 types of fans ... those for Derrick and those for Max. It reminds me of all the drama surrounding Joey Belladonna coming back to Anthrax and all the people who liked Priest better with Ripper, but that's just rock 'n' roll! Besides, does anyone remember the circumstances behind Max leaving the band? How's that for loyalty!

I feel respected as a fan when they´re not trying to deceive me with a copy of what they´ve done in the past. Instead of that they push themselves to create new music with new influences and new challenges to evolve and show something different.

So I thank god they are not listening to people telling them to make another Beneath the Remains or another Arise (again ;P).

This is probably just a big hoax. You know Max and Igor have been planning the reunion for ages already - come on, it's not like they would stay bitter enemies for a fucking decade just because of that ugly greenhaired troll of a wife of his. They all knowthe reunion is gonna be a gigantic success financially, and I bet my left nut it will happen within 2-3 years from now.

Sepultura was always way better with Max (peaking with ARISE) but Dante XXI is actually pretty decent - at least better than the earlier stuff w/ Derrick.

All these stupid rock wives always seem to fuck it up somehow for their talented husbands:
Yoko Ono
Courtney Lovee
$haron Osbourne
Gloria C.

Derrick is a good singer but really I missed MAX to be the frontman for Sepultura ... I didn't have the chance to see the original line up ( Igon / Max / Paulo / Andreas ) only with Derrick, but I think maybe in the future they will have a reunion like Anthrax / Nuclear Assault / Testament ...

Long Live to Heavy Metal!!!!

Fans do not know anything about the product they ingest. Look at the top ten singles on Billboard. Rap CRAP! Kayne West has been heralded as the savior of hip hop...a proveribial Jesus.

If that is the case then the only thing left to fullfill the false prophesy is to KILL him. Jesus was only a savior post morteum.

Fans don't know anything. If it sounds good and they can play it while driving or dancing, they buy it. Probably only 9% of audiences actually understand a note of music.

I would absolutely love to see the original Sep. line up. I've seen Soulfly a bizillion times, but never Max w/ Sepultura. I would kill to see it.

And there is nothing Derrik said that is disrespectful to his fans. You can't grow old w/ your crowd. That's insane.

And your point is? Of course most fans of music don't actually unerstand a note of it. That is not their job. Your right about if it sounds good then they buy it. I do the same thing. If it sounds good then I buy it. Catchiness sells. Whether it be a catchy guitar riff, drum beat, chorus, hip hop beat, etc... It all sells. So what! So what if the top 10 singles are nothing but rap and pop music. Do you want it to be filled with metal/rock bands? So that everyone can say that they sold out because they became popular.

After three disappointing albums, Sepultura are back with a bang. Dante XXI is a thrash masterpiece, as good as Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains or Arise.
Derrick you did a great job on the album mate, congratulations.
The production's the best one of the Post Max era, maybe you should considering producing your future albums yourselves as well. And yes Dante XXI will sell more than Against, Nation and Roorback, not because it's "more mainstream" (it's a lot less mainstream actually, faster and more violent) but because it's a hell of a lot better. Oh and did I mention it kills the entire Soulfly discography dead?? Good job guys and welcome back.

DANTE XXI KILLS.
