Unauthorized SLIPKNOT Documentary 'Unmasks' Band's Alleged Attempts To 'Destroy' Local Scene
- Mar. 1, 2006
|
|
MTV.com recently spoke to filmmaker Chad Calek about his latest "documentary," "A Clown Short of Destiny", which follows the controversial rise of SLIPKNOT from the cornfields of Des Moines, Iowa, to the horn-throwin' crowds of Ozzfest. But it also chronicles the 'KNOT's alleged "attempts to disgrace their hometown hard-rock scene and the effect that had on dozens of local bands," according to MTV.com. "The story isn't about SLIPKNOT's music," Calek explained to MTV.com. "I love it. I think they're one of the greatest metal-rock bands that ever lived. I own all of their records. And when SLIPKNOT exploded, they didn't owe anybody anything. ... But there's a difference between not supporting [a music scene] and trying to destroy [one]. That's the line you see them cross in this film." According to Calek, that's not his opinion but rather the attitude of the community interviewed in the documentary, who've been crying foul over SLIPKNOT's alleged disassociation with Des Moines ever since the masked metallers signed with New York's Roadrunner Records. "A Clown Short of Destiny" wasn't conceived as a SLIPKNOT movie, Calek said. When the band formed 10 years ago, Calek was in his own Des Moines group, 35 INCH MUDDER. Both acts came up at around the same time, becoming the city's two biggest draws. They were also friends. The director, who has shot music videos for bands like BLEEDING THROUGH and manages acts like INDEX CASE, started shooting the film so he could document his own band's evolution. "We were like a heavy, screamo, rap-metal thing," Calek said. "We thought it would be funny to document a band like this in the middle of nowhere. We were literally just filming live shows and other bands in the scene. SLIPKNOT was one of them." At around the same time, the music industry started looking for the next Seattle — and many believed Des Moines, with some 50 emerging hard-rock bands, might be the next money-making metropolis. Calek recalls American Records executive George Drakoulias as having once said the only thing "stopping Des Moines from becoming the next Seattle is direct flights." Read more at MTV.com.

A classic story. Small-town kids become super rich and famous, and promptly forget where they come from. It's a sad tale of some down-home midwest kids who lose touch with their roots. Somehow I'm not surprised. Slipknot never seemed like the most "authentic" group, what with the gimmicks, and shoddy musicianship, and all. Of course, this article isn't very specific about how exactly Slipknot "destroyed" the local music scene. I guess I'll have to go see the movie. Of course, there's a chance that the movie might have actual Slipknot music in it, so I think i might pass.

There is more to Iowa than corn and trees. You seem to have mixed Iowa up with Nebraska. I've always loved how slipknot sells millions of records, but I dare you to find 10 people to admit liking them. They are kinda like the fat girlfriend.
Anyway the music is ok. But the gimmick is kinda dumb.

It took me a long time to even give slipknot a chance due to their numerous gimmicks. Now that I have there are a few songs here and there that I really like. If they were normal I would've gave them a chance from day one. Maybe I'm superficial but wtf I still would like it if they stopped the bullshit and just played metal.

Their second major label album was named IOWA and in most of their interviews they talks about Des Moines.
I dig their first two albums. The holy rick rubin going pro tools on Vol. 3 made it sound too 'digital / clear'. The first two had that dirty analog vibe to them and overall sense of havoc. Still some okay tunes on Vol. 3 though

the extra members have it made! Guy stands behind a sample box for 40 minutes or so a show. Never does an interview cause knowbody cares about him and since people don't know what he looks like he doesn't get bothered by fans.... but he still makes just as much as the rest of the guys in the band!! lol
And this Calek dude? If the music scene was any good there'd still be producers and managers scouting the area. One band cannot wreck a music scene, if anything they probably helped it. People aren't going to ignore you just because Slipknot says so, they're going to ignore you because they don't like what they hear.
Slipknot was good when they started. They had a new sound to bring, but if they're smart they'll call it quits now cause their style is getting old.

I am going to go put my 'Knot shirt on, my goth chains, my baggy black pants, and rebel against authority by shopping at a corporately owned shop at my local mall.
But it will be a shop that has the appearance of an 'anit-trend' store. Then I will finally be an individual because my parents hate me and I want to scare them the bands I like. I am so rebellious. Long Live Slipknot and Manson.

Slipknot ruined the music scene? I can't say that is true but during that time their were many good bands around Des Moines like STONE SOUR. Cory Taylor & Jim Root was not all ways with the knot. I think the original lead singer is still in a local band called FACECAGE. May be thats what led to bad feelings in the music sence. My favorite bands were 4High, Junk Poet, Tripwire. If any body has heard these bands or any other bands that was around at that time you would also be wondering why none of these other bands made it except Stone Sour. 35"mudder was ok but they did have a big following and even did some stuff with Primer 55. Can't wait to see it.

Shit, Corey Taylor claimed that the whole purpose of the title was to "reflect on the relationship the band has with their home, which isn't a good one..."
It has nothing to do with respect, rather playing up their image.
It's the equivalent of Mudvayne and their feelings about Peoria/Illinois in general. They've all gone Hollywood. Oh well. :)

Back when ALOT of bands were shooting for the title of biggest band in Des Moines. There were lots: Boca Saint, DeadFront, Slipknot, 35" inch, tons...Slipknot were only 7 back then. Not the 9 they are now. The biggest competition they had, in MY opinion, and others, was DeadFront. But 35" was up there in populartity as well, drawing crowds. When the Slipknot made it big and got signed, I remember 35" Mudder telling everyone that they were getting signed to a major as well. I think they said it was Sony, not sure, as that's been along time ago. What I see here is this Calek STILL trying to outshine the 'Knot. 35" could'nt stand the fact that Slipknot broke outta here before them. Hell, 35" never made it ANYWHERE. And if ANYONE was 'Nu Metal' it was 35", straight up RAP style verses and choruses, layered with mediocre guitar, nothing heavy as SlipKnot. I had there disk , but it was forgetfull. I still have DeadFront disk. Jim Root played on it. Still loved their performance at Buddafest a few years back when the guy rode a motocross bike off the stage and into the crowd. I almost miss that scene. Long live the "KNot. I will absoulutley KILL for them. Don't come into my house and fuck with them, Calek, or ANYONE. I will take your fucking head right off...

I was in Minneapolis and in 93', the local musicians were saying "Oh Yeah, were the next Seattle...blah blah blah" heard the same BS in Dallas, Austin, Atlanta, Kansas City and Phoenix from 93' till 96'. None of those scenes emerged. This was a common rumour that floated around every city that had 2 bands or more. Get over it! Sliphop made it and you didn't. If they were the best band in your scene then everybody else must've sucked ass big time because Sliphop sucks major ass.

Slipknot could be one of the heaviest bands out there but they are held back by 3 to many band mates could be 4 yeah 4 to many 2 of em dont do shit but bang on kegs like a 2 year old would. if I were to rate them useing a scale 1 to 10 10 being the best hearing all the bands talent and how they use it in their music they rate about 5 I mean Corey can sing he does that just fine in the music Joey has to compete with 2 year olds Mick is the reason they rate so low he has more talent than his music leads you to beleive I see him on stage and think this guy is sick wow ok ok then I see him in an interveiw doing demos HOLY SHIT different playing style altogether so check it out at youtube.com search engine mick thompson

I personally think that the whole friggin nu metal scene in desmoines sucked. when Slipknot first came out with their big c.d. I didn't buy it and I live in Desmoines and was still trendy enough to be into that shit. I didn't really like them then and I hate them now. Every other band sounded just as shitty if not shittier then them and followed the exact same lame formula so of course they are gonna pick the best of the crap and flush the rest down the shitter who care, nobody in desmoines anymore thats for f*ckin sure that shits dead.
