REVOLVER Magazine Sold To U.K.'s FUTURE PUBLISHING For $4 Million - Mar. 6, 2006
According to BrandRepublic.com, U.K. magazine giant Future Publishing has paid £2.3 million (approximately $4 million) to buy U.S. heavy metal magazine Revolver, which has a circulation of around 200,000 (NOTE: San Francisco Business Times lists the magazine's circulation in today's report as 150,000), from Harris Publications.

Revolver and its web site will join the six titles in Future U.S.'s music portfolio, including Guitar World and Future Music.

It was launched in 2000 and now generates gross profits of $500,000 on turnover of $3.7 million.

Greg Ingham, chief executive of Future, said: "Revolver is a natural fit with our U.S. music titles and will benefit from being part of a larger music portfolio.

"There is also strong editorial crossover with our UK music titles Metal Hammer and Classic Rock, both of which are seeing good circulation growth at present."

Magazines, and newspapers have no long term future, because most young people don't read them. They look at sites like this instead, to try and make the covented "First Post".

Perhaps, but then again perhaps not because that sweeping statement seems to be based merely on your opinion. Meanwhile, music magazine sales in the UK are on the rise. I don't know what the situation is in the US but it does put you comments in doubt. Soon animals, books, watches and bricks will be a thing of the past because of the internet too...wooh!

Music magazines always are horrible anyway.

The only good thing they are worth is pictures and interviews, two thing someone can find on the internet

Aha! Yes exactly! They are so rubbish I don't know why anyone buys them! But if you can use it as a doorstop or collect bird droppings with it then it surely has a use.
I don't really see what Metal Hammer is doing that is so bad though. It's about 1000 times better than anything in the US and three times more useful than the contents of the average gibbon cage. Sans Gibbon/s of course.

I actually think Classic Rock is one of the best magazines going, although the U.S. independent rag Progression is probably my favorite. Of course, I'm 36 years old and grew up on 80s Metal/Hard Rock and evolved into being a major Prog-Rock/Prog-Metal fanatic. I loved Metal Hammer in the late 80s, but don't really care for it now since they primarily seem to concentrate on the so-called Metal that is popular sales-wise, or what is supposed to be "cool". ("Cool" meaning Metal bands that still don't use guitar solos, or have vocalists that sound like they're hemorrhaging. For my money, I'll put Barlow-era Iced Earth against almost anyone as an example of Metal that can be powerful & wall-shaking that has both guitar solos & great vocals. Owens is still pretty damn good, but I prefer Barlow.) I gotta admit their Iron Maiden special issue was pretty awesome.

No magazine will please everyone, but I think CR does a good job of balancing covering the old stuff & new & upcoming acts that keep the Old-School Hard Rock/Metal feel. They really need to keep references to The Strokes, The White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, Hawthorne Heights & the like to a bare minimum though. I bought one issue of Revolver after Dimebag died; about the only thing worth reading was his tribute.

And I'll agree that none of the mass-market U.S. music rags are worth the paper they're printed on; Rolling Stone's infamous "Best Guitarists" issue that had Jack White somewhere in the Top 20 proves how commercial, non-relevant & out of touch with reality they really are.

I don't think they'll be getting rid of Hawthorne Heights, if Metal Hammer is anything to go by, there'll be more faggy emo to come.

Apparently, everyone on Blabbermouth, etc are either closet EMO fans or we are the only ones not buying the trends.

While I know recent marketing grads are discovering new ways to shove music no one cares for down our throats, there must be tons of people buying this stuff. All you see on the "music" outlets is this stuff. And while I grew up in the water-down 80's hair metal days, at least the bands somewhat sounded different from each other. Now days, they all sound the same - and look the same. I guess my point is, while we all bitch about it, someone is buying it and not admitting to doing so.

They actually had a large article on Black metal in there in the April issue. It's all about Black metal .....that most people know already. I think they are trying to get Black metal into the American mainstream : (
