METALLICA To Help Induct BLACK SABBATH Into ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

METALLICA have posted the following message on their official web site: "So there we are, hanging out at HQ getting ready for our first visit to South Africa, and a call comes in wondering if we can leave a few days early and stop by New York to induct a bunch of guys from Birmingham, England (they're called BLACK SABBATH, you might've heard of them) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It took us all of 3/4 of a second to say 'Fuck yeah!!' " BLACK SABBATH wrote the book on heavy music, and like many other snot-nosed kids, we read it religiously over and over again. For all of us in METALLICA, BLACK SABBATH are a major influence not only on our music, but on our lives, and as you can imagine, we're psyched to join Bill, Geezer, Ozzy, and Tony for the induction ceremony on Monday, March 13. "Not only will we be inducting SABBATH, we are going to make a humble attempt at playing some of their songs live in front of the gathered masses, including, most humbling of all, the four members of the band themselves. "If you want to check it out, VH1 will be there with their cameras. For show times look here."

Hey-Well I have listen more or less to metal since I first got a tape of KEA back in 84! If I enjoy St. ANger-well there's 3 or 4 tracks thats pretty good/Black album was fucking soild etc and a track like I Dissapear is fucking wicked....If I liked the Load and ReLoad albums-Hell Yeahhhh I liked 85 percent of both albums! I don't know how much you listen to, so therefor I don't know where all ya doubtful refrences comes from, but pop comes from the term popular and that either makes Opeth, Slayer, Metallica etc etc all very much pop or none of the above mentioned!!!!!
In Modern times pop means pop music (well I still don't know how much music you have been exposed to), but claiming metallica to be pop music-is just plain ol' stupid (unless you just don't know better)!!!!

It's fine to be a fan of Metallica's old shit. But why defend them on and on and on when we all know that they are NOT the same band? I don't get it.
You know, Megadeth put out an extremely crappy album - Risk. Dave admitted it was a piece of shit and went on to put out more metal. Metallica will never admit that they fucked up, especially with St. Anger. And you Metallica fans won't admit that they fucked up. I don't get the hold they have over you.

I have been a metalhead since 90', 5 years after I came into this world........
And I was just wondering how many of you fellow "metal-heads"......
have actually listened to the "black album", Load, reload, or Garage Days Revisited lately......
There are some sick songs from black album.....
Of Wolf and Man
The God that Failed
Holier Than Thou.....
Those songs are heavier then anything that you can hear coming from a lot of power metal and death metal bands today.......
To me, just because something is tuned down and muddy, and has blast beats, that does not make it heavy.....
plus
WHAT OTHER BANDS ARE COVERING AND PAYING TRIBUTE TO ARTISTS like MERCYFUL FATE, BLACK SABBATH, BLUE OYSTER CULT, MOTORHEAD!
some bands that helped make metal what it is!
I mean load and reload do sound like a hybrid of metal and classic rock........but how many bands had done that before?
I would only see that as selling out if the metal classic rock hybrid was a tried and true formula......

Looks like these chumps are almost done with their sissy slapfight, so I'll try to get a question in here. You know...there are some of us that come on here to try to tap the intelligence of the metal community and get the inside slant. Too bad we have to weed through endless debates about Metallica (i.e. They suck...no they don't...yes they do). RTL doesn't sound like the Loads...well what a fucking discovery!
Is RJD included in the induction ceremony in any way? Granted, he wasn't in the original band, but he did contribute on some of their best albums. At some point you have to exclude replacement members (not saying Tony Martin, Glen Hughes, etc need to be a part of this), but DIO? He deserves to be there (IMHO)!! Anybody know if Tony has reached out to him on this topic?
Good question above. Why did Ozz change his view. I'd say it's because: 1) They got in...no reason to bitch anymore and 2) Shaaaaarrron!! Nothing like some face time when you're rolling out Ozzfest 06.

Whatever, moot point, really. The bottom line, of course, is that Metallica hasn't been any good for about 15 years. It saddens me, because I still check in from time to time, and they're still sucking.
There is no argument. I read a bunch of posts saying, "but, in their own words, they said they'd never stay the same, so they never sold out."
This, of course, is stupid. Kill em All, to Ride, to Puppets, to Justice...these albums were vastly different from each other, yet, had one thing in common: they didn't suck.
As for not selling out, you gotta be fucking kidding. Band that makes its career on tape trading goes after napster. Band who SWEARS they will never make a video makes a zillion of them. Band who once proclaimed, "we're never gonna write about cars or chicks" writes, "Fuel" and, "Nothing Else Matters."
It's just a given that Metallica sold out, there's not even a question. One look at the Load photo sessions, and it's obvious.
But forget how they look; the point is, they don't make good music. I want them to, but the simply don't.
Some of the black album is ok; if you're listening to anything after that, you simply have no taste. That's not subjective, or in the eye of the beholder, it's just the stone cold truth.
They used to write MUSIC. Complex, interesting music. I could give a fuck if they stopped being "metal"; I just hate that they stopped being good.

and if I am correct Dio will be honored in a way, along with a lot of people who do not deserve the honor, because I think the rule is that if you were ever a member of the band then you are in the hall........
so good for Cozy Powell, Ronnie James Dio, Vinny Appice,!
and the few other talented members to work under apparantly "iommi's sabbath".....

I am 39 and been to over 200 shows since 1981. I like all kinds of metal and have even seen the DEAD...those were some good jams. I love my Slayer, Death, Megadeth, DRI, Testment and lots of other metal bands. I work for radio here in Albuquerque and we rock..you can listen via the stream..www.94rock.com save all the hate for the pamper heads blowing up our soldiers!!

They weren't young. They were beaking off about not writing about chicks and cars in 89. That'd make Ulrich and Hetfield 26 years old. 2 years later, Nothing Else Matters.
For the record, there are some great songs about girls; relationships can be intricate and thought provoking, and a good source of insperation. But that song is garbage, and was in direct contrast to "what Metallica's all about."
There may be great songs about cars, I can't think of any, but hey, they're probably out there somewhere. "Fuel" isn't one of them. Duh.
In order to accept that Metallica "matured", you have to believe that they "grew up" between 89-91, between the ages of 26-28. I don't buy it.
Metallica.makes.bad.music.
Every argument to the contrary is full of holes, such as:

Um, well, I for one supported these assholes. Not my responsibility to "top" them, not their resposibility to keep pleasing me, either. But, again, they simply make bad music now.
"They sold millions of records!"
So did the Backstreet Boys. Sales do not equal quality.
"They don't play by the rules; that's not selling out."
a) Rules or no, they stopped being any good.
b) No, selling out is consiously writing for marketability, hence, The Black Album.
This can go on and on and on, and undoubtedly will. I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm not a basher, it all really boils down to the music, which simply stopped being any good.
I recall back before the Black Album dropped, the love for Metallica was pretty much universal; anyone who knew anything about music or metal for that matter worshiped the band with feverish reverence.
Now, anytime anything gets posted on BM, there's this all out war. This wouldn't have happened 15 years ago, because they were actually a relevent, viable, and exciting band.
I look forward to their collaboration with Rick Rubin, but I don't hold out much hope.

Metallica stopped making good music after and justice for all........
LAST TIME I CHECKED THAT WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE AN OPINION..........
how many bands that have lasted as long as metallica can you say that every album is great.........
if you can that is your opinion......
I like exodus and testament..........
but I think they both stopped making "good music" at points in their career........
I like Overkill but they only made a handful of good music if you ask me........
In my opinion every album Dio has sang on is loaded with good music..........
plenty of people will tell you different.........

regardless if a bands shitty album is still "METAL" or not.......
it's still a shitty album.........
and some people prolly love that shitty album!

Perhaps i should clarify. Selling out is when you consiously write good music, refusing to adhere to trends, then conciously do a 180 to garner more exposure/sales.
Artists ARE capable of writing for marketability without selling out. Britney or NSYNC, for example, never had any "cred" to begin with; they write (and I use the term loosely) to appeal to a mass audience, and present themselves in a manner befitting their music. Thus, they are incapable of selling out, as they never had any depth to betray in the first place.
Other artists, say, the Beatles, or Zeppelin, wrote mainstream music, but it was QUALITY. This is THE hardest thing to do in modern music, to be quality AND have mass appeal. So, no selling out there.
Half of the Black Album, Load, and Reload were blatent attempts to sell records. This is in sharp contrast to Metallica's previous outings, where they refused to exist within the confines of popular music.
There is no greater example, in fact, of selling out, than Metallica. Shorter, more accesible songs, purposely written, landed Metallica a HUGE record. The Black Album had every staple of corporate marketing attached to it: meaningless videos, big ballad, single after single tailored for mainstream rock audiences.
Gone were the complex arrangements. Gone was the ferocious attitude. Gone was the bitterness. And gone was the quality.
And if you meant nothing personal, then why would you say, "you have shit for brains"? Lol, no offence taken, and nothing personal from my end either.

....you rule! You made the main point here - Metallica does not make good music. People our age (I'm 34) know this, but people 10 years or more younger than us will defend Metallica to the death no matter what crap they put out. Then they say "you have shit for brains" and go high five each other.
Pointless, isn't it? But sometimes I just get sick of hearing "Metallica is the greatest band ever" and find the need to make my opinion known. But you have said it all...

Both rocked, both had stupid ass songs: Phantom Lord, Rattlehead.
Ride The Lighting < Peace Sells
Both rocked, but Megadave takes it. Peace Sells proved you could make great songs out of riff-a-thons.
Master of Puppets > So Far, So Good, So What.
Metallica blew Dave out of the water.
Justice < Rust
Both great albums, but there's no bass on Justice. And it just goes on and on...and...on....Rust In Peace was brilliant. Ridiculously good.
Black Album < Countdown To Extinction
They both started to suck, but Metallica sucked more. At least Dave still had chops. Ok, so Sad But True is a great tune, but Dave's album was better.
After that, it's really hard to say who sucked worse.
